Dear NCTTA members,

The 2004 Stiga/Table Tennis Pioneers NCTTA Championship, held in conjuction
with the 2004 Newgy ACUI Table Tennis Championship, has reached its conclusion.
Again, congratulation to Texas Wesleyan University for winning the title! I
hope to direct you to the following links for more results:

www.nctta.org/champs/2004/index.htm

If you or your club members have found coverage of the event in your area,
please direct the link to our webmaster, Dan, at webmaster@... and myself
at vicepresident@...

Currently, the executives are busy tying up the loose ends. I have just
finished the financial statement for NCTTA, which is the attachment here. As a
government-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we are required to
disclose all financial statements. The same info should be posted on our
website shortly.

Two other main issues coming up are the election for the new set of executives
and bidding for next year's championship site. Our tentative schedule is to
begin the election in 7-10 days. As for the bidding for the 2005 NCTTA
championship site, we hope to begin the process by either middle of May or
beginning of June at the latest. I wish all teams with the right facilities to
consider bidding. NCTTA is now open to holding its championship at an outside
facility that is not affiliated with an academic institution. This would allow
any school to come up with a creative bid (such as the merger of City Beach and
Stanford Univ. into one single bid during this past year). Please use the
following guideline from 2003 as a rough roadmap (obviously the time table has
changed):

Dear NCTTA
NCTTA news coverage. The TWU school paper did a half page article April 21.
Dallas Morning news (Circulation about 2 million) mentioned the win of TWU
NCTTA national championships on their first page. Star Telegram from Fort
Worth (about 1 million in circulation) also mentioned it on their first
page. ESPN morning TV show mentioned it both on their radio and TV show.
Channel 5 in Dallas TX will cover live the Texas Wesleyan University NCTTA
Championship team during their morning show Tuesday May 3rd at 7:30 AM. We
will bring a table and do an exhibition in their studio and the whole team
(6 athletes and 2 coaches) that played in the nationals will be present for
additional interviews.

TX Wesleyan University will host a banquet in honor of the NCTTA national
champions, Thursday April 29th on campus including all University Senior

Dear NCTTA members,

Please open the two attached documents to see how your school can bid for the
2005 NCTTA championship!

Many consider our 2004 NCTTA championship to be a success based on the
number of schools (16 out of 17 invited teams were able to attend) and its
location (first ever championship held outside of the Northeast corridor with 13
teams and 9 executives flying into the Bay area). Stanford, as the host school,
also managed to solicit the help of City Beach sports complex to provide a
professional facility and venue for our use.

Therefore, I strongly encourage all eligible schools (those with 8 or more
tables) to consider bidding and explore creative arrangement with some of the
excellent table tennis facilities and managers in your area. I am more than
happy to answer any questions you might have.

Dear NCTTA members and officers,

I am pleased to announce a couple new executives joining our board. Tom Yost
has agreed to take over Ohio-Indiana Division while David Chiou from Hopkins
will be the new Mid-Atlantic division director. Andrew Holm (won his election
against Steven Chan with a vote of 6 to 1), Jason Sun, Tim Titrud and Zhiyong
Zhou have all agreed to come back for another term. Ontario division will
rejoin Upstate NY while Michigan is still not considered as a stand-alone
division.

For ALL NCTTA member presidents, please e-mail me the contact info for at
least 5 members of your club for next school year. I want to revamp our nctta
e-mail list since several club presidents have obviously not forwarded relevant
league e-mails to their club members.

For all old officers, whether you are staying for another year or leaving,
please e-mail me a one-page report by MIDNIGHT May 12th, describing the success,
failure and contact info from your division or your area of work. I hope to
place them on our forum and our website and pass them onto the new executives.

Thanks!
Jack

Just for your information, today NCTTA got some good publicity. The 2004
NCTTA national champion team was featured in the Fox Channel 4 in the
Dallas/Fort Worth Metro Plex area in the Good Morning show. It is featured
in about 5 million homes. It was five 20 second teasers, and a 4 minute
segment with the anchors this morning from 7:00 - 8:00 AM. During the whole
segment the 3 foot NCTTA trophy was in the camera shot.
We hope to be able to put it on the school website soon.

Dan do we have video capability on the NCTTA website?

Dear NCTTA members,

American Youth Table Tennis Organization is consist of a group of highly
enthusiastic and passionate people who are making a big difference in
introducing kids to our sport. It is primarily based in New York City and have
several 2200+ rated coaches volunteering their time to go to individual public
schools to teach kids table tennis on a weekly basis.

The attached flier indicates a tournament where they could need a few
volunteers in various capacities or even showing up to support these kids as
spectators! Secondly, they would love to have a few college table tennis
players who work alongside their 2200+ rated coaches to teach kids table tennis
in NYC's public school system. It should be an invaluable experience both in
its volunteerism value and in maybe picking up a few pointers from these
coaches.

Please take a look!

have wondered about College Table Tennis' impact upon the election.
http://www.usatt.org/news/2004_election_info.shtml <p>

There are between 70-80 schols in the NCTTA and at last count 300 College
Students playing college
table tennis. My plea to you all is to get out and vote in the USATT
election if you are a member and 18 years or older. As an organization we cannot
tell you who to vote for but impress upon you the importance of
making your voice heard. And unlike the US Political elections even if you are
NOT a US Citizen you can vote here! <p>

Please look closely at how candidates place college table tennis at its campaign

Many of you understand the state of College Table Tennis in this country
and I for one hope you want to improve it and vote for a candidate that supports
us to improve it. One of the best ways to improve

Ballots will be mailed to everyone's mailing address that is registered with

Dear NCTTA members,

As many of you know, USATT election for board of executives are coming out
fast. The ballots are supposed to arrive by Sept 15th to the members. I have
asked all three candidates for presidency for agenda they have on college table
tennis. So far, I have received the statements from Christian Lillieroose.
Please see below.

"Dear NCTTA constituents,

Thank you for giving me this precious opportunity to re-iterate my college
table tennis experiences and outline my future plans as a candidate for USA
Table Tennis presidency. I wish to share with you my vision of a brighter
future for our sport. For more details, please see www.usttf.org

My life has been intertwined with college table tennis for about two decades:

- In 1986, I started the first ever varsity table tennis program in United
Stated working for USATT at Anderson College in South Carolina.

- In 2001, I created the varsity table tennis program at Texas Wesleyan
University, and have recruited and trained many students who have USATT ratings
in the range of 1000-1800. In 2001, less than 20% of our table tennis team
members were in that rating range. However, last year, exactly 50% of our
junior varsity team members are rated under-1800 and I expect their proportion
to substantially increase in the near future.

- I have held the position of NCTTA Texas Division Director since 2001 and
understand the intricacies of table tennis clubs trying to compete or even
prosper among various clubs on college campus.

As a candidate, after careful considering how each can realistically be
implemented, I promise the following:

1. College Club Support Initiative: Table tennis clubs can attract 30+ members
at the beginning of each school year but retaining those members is nearly
impossible when clubs only have access to 4 or even 2 tables. Once I am elected
as the new President for USATT, I will create a Club Support Initiative where
table tennis equipment suppliers will act as partners in donating high-quality
tables, balls and paddles for selected clubs across the country. The clubs will
be chosen from a grant application process.

2. National College Table Tennis Program Coordinator: Another unique problem
facing college clubs is the extremely high turn-over rate of
club executives from year to year. Once a club becomes inactive, it will have
trouble receiving budgets from school administrators in the future even when it
is revived by enthusiastic students. I wish to create a position within NCTTA
and ACUI where a national college table tennis program coordinator whose only
task is to contact school club executives directly and school administrators
directly (whether they are the Directors of Club Sport or Deans of Student Life)
to ensure the continuity of table tennis club programs from one academic year to
the next. My major objective is to use some of USATT's budget to pay the
coordinator part-time and create incentives for him or her.

3. USATT College Table Tennis Program Scholarship: I will utilize a portion of
USATT's fund to create a scholarship foundation that gives funds to specially
selected NCTTA college table tennis programs. Some team members (selected by
school administrators) will receive scholarship money toward their tuition
payment. The team will also receive uniforms and other equipment support.

4. Expand NCAA Initiative: I fully support the initiative of bringing college
table tennis into NCAA. To make table tennis an NCAA women’s sport would change
the acceptance of table tennis forever in USA. I will do my best to back plans
put forth by Dennis Davis and Tiger Ramakrishnan, chair of NCTTA's women's
initiative sub-committee. My Club Support Initiative and creation of a
part-time national program coordinator will directly contribute to that goal by
stabilizing all club teams that compete in NCTTA. Prosperity will be the best
evidence for NCAA. They will realize that table tennis is an active and
prospering college sport in United States!

5. College Table Tennis Representative on the USATT Board: Currently, Mr. Willy
Leparulo’s position on USATT Board is solely based on him being the national
director of ACUI table tennis. Therefore, in fact, USATT and its current
administrators have not allowed any official voice from NCTTA to be heard during
their board meetings. I wish to change that and have a representative whose
appointment will specifically and unequivocally ask him to voice the interests
of both NCTTA and ACUI.

In all, I firmly believe that the team model will foster more Cooperation
and lead to growth in college table tennis. A competitive table tennis
environment at the college level will have a trickle down and trickle up effect.
In other words, children will pick up paddles and junior players will continue
to train once they see that college table tennis can be an essential part of
their future. The effect on the grassroot movement will be tremendous. The
trickle up effect will create the base for professional table tennis.

Please visit my website at www.usttf.org and give me any feedback at
texas@.... I will return your e-mails promptly. Thank you for your
support!

Sincerely,
Christian Lillieroos

Jason Yoon has stepped down as your president due to time committment issues.
According to our Constitution Article III Section 4, Jason has appointed Willy
Leparulo as his replacement and I have approved his appointment in accordance
with our Constitution. Willy will be our "interim" president until the 2005
election.

Jason Yoon has become a co-division director to assist David Chiou in

However, he has stepped down as Florida Division Director. Instead, Mark Plyler
from Florida State University has taken over as our new Florida Division
Director. While in New York City division, Wayne Chin from FIT has taken over
the division director position. Thank you to Zhiyong for his 2-year effort in
that position.

Lastly, we have a new division joining us this year in Kansas. Venkatesh

Dear Collegiate Table Tennis Players:

Jack Wu recently invited me to write a statement regarding specific plans that
I'll be pursuing for college table tennis if I am re-elected. His request,
unfortunately, came just after Hurricane Frances hit Florida. It's almost a
week later and I still do not have power in my home! So I'm doing my best to
cope with this challenge. I apologize for this belated response. Jack stated
that he would try his best to disseminate information to NCTTA members. I
appreciate and thank Jack for the opportunity to present the following
statement:

Quoting from my magazine ad and website www.sheripittman.com, I have promised to
"Pursue an NCAA Recognition Strategy and Increase Collegiate Funding: I
initiated an NCAA recognition strategy by forming a Collegiate NCAA Committee. I
want to continue to work with the collegiate rep on the Board to enact and
financially support NCTTA proposals."

As the above statement indicates, if I am re-elected, collegiate table tennis
will be one of my highest priorities during the next four years. The magazine
ad and website content were created before I received this request from Jack.

Before I go on, I'd like to digress a little bit. Let me first state that a
candidate is bombarded with different issues from constituent groups who want to
hear what the candidates will promise to do for them. When I set and commit to
priorities, I have to look at USATT's core issues –- issues consistent with the
USOC's mandated primary and ultimate goal for USATT: winning Olympic medals.
Non-core issues are issues such as Paralympic or disabled table tennis that can
never advance the goal, and would impede it by diverting personnel and financial
resources that could otherwise be expended on core issues. (Indeed, the USOC
has set up a separately-administered Paralympics structure for that purpose.)

Core issues are issues that USATT can justify as being a necessary element
toward reaching that ultimate goal in order to keep our USOC charter as our
sport's national governing body. Collegiate table tennis is an important link
to the goal because it provides a potential solution to creating an environment
for our elite juniors who desire to attend college while sustaining their
interest and improving their table tennis skills. I say "potential" because
collegiate table tennis is not now in a position to be able to broadly offer
this to our top junior elite athletes enrolling in or attending college. But,
we have to start somewhere.

When I became president, there were many core issues that required a lot of
attention. This is because USATT is not only subject to USOC oversight, but is
also responsible for servicing and growing our membership. Years before I
became president, USATT had made commitments to the membership (putting out a
first-class magzine, providing reasonably updated and accurate ratings, holding
major national and international tournaments). Back in 1999, USATT was not
well-situated. It took us some time to get the right people, the right systems
and the right direction set for USATT. All of those structural and
organizational items have, therefore, been on the forefront as the core issues
during my presidency.

Now USATT has financial reserves, an excellent executive director along with a
staff committed to the growth of our sport and improved membership services
(great magazine, well-managed national tournaments, quickly-processed ratings,
etc).
As USATT president, I became aware that collegiate table tennis activists needed
a more responsive Board member representing their concerns. I nominated Willy
Leparulo to serve as the Community-Based Representative on the Board. And I am
happy with the job that he has done so far. He has certainly made a difference
at the Board level by bridging a gap that had existed between USATT and NCTTA.
I hope that he has also helped relay important USATT information to NCTTA
members.

Another step that my administration has taken is to devise an NCAA Recognition
Strategy. This is a long-term strategy and is handled by the Collegiate NCAA
Committee and will receive staff support from USATT's new technical/high
performance director. In addition, I expect Willy to begin making concrete
proposals as to how USATT and NCTTA can better work together to achieve our
mutual objectives. The Board will consider reports and proposals as they are
presented. As I have stated above, I will support increasing USATT's financial
commitment to the growth of collegiate table tennis. I add here that precisely
because I attended to USATT's core concerns, USA TT is now in a financial
position to offer this support and to work more closely with NCTTA.

As for specific plans to promote collegiate table tennis, I plan to support
collegiate table tennis as follows:

1. Provide funding to send a team to the World University Games: The proper
procedure is to provide funding in the annual budget. "Emergency" allocations
are seldom approved. Currently, the ACUI and NCTTA championships are the
culmination of all the table tennis activities and programs in collegiate table
tennis. The opportunity to represent all colleges at the World University Games
should provide more motivation and top competitive experience for top collegiate
players and generate more interest and increase participation among collegiate
players. Until recently, teams to the World University Games have gone through
the USOC, just like the Olympic and Pan Am Games. Athletes were recommended by
their NGB. In collegiate table tennis, as Willy pointed out to USATT, things
can get done more quickly and efficiently when USATT is involved. Often things
cannot be done with USATT's blessing. A team to the World University Games
could be entered and funded, partially or full
y, by USATT – the national governing body. The coach could be a USATT coach
picked by USATT from among its coaches for the National, Cadet or Junior
National Teams. As you all know, Willy recommended to cancel the trip to the
2004 World University Games in Hungary. One of the reasons was that a coach or
a team leader could not be found in time, even though USATT (with the approval
of USATT Treasurer Tong Lee and I) approved some funding for the trip.

2. Provide funding for a collegiate team to the US Open Team Championships and
to the NA Teams Championships: The reason for doing this is the same as for
sending a team to the World University Games. Doing this reinforces the purpose
f or doing #1.

3. Provide coaching opportunities to collegiate players: Another of my
priorities is to create more Community Olympic Development Programs
http://www.palmbeachsports.com/Misc/frames/codp.html) for table tennis. In the
Palm Beach County CODP that I helped create, the CODP funds and hires a coach.
The students at FAU, for example, are eligible to train under Coach Ping Zhang
both at a health club as elite CODP athletes and at FAU as FAU students. The
system that I helped structure with them has worked out very well. As USATT
enters into more CODP partnerships, I will package the CODP in every community
so that the CODP coach also works with local collegiate players.

4. Find colleges to offer scholarships to college students: I am involved in
getting a college to offer free tuition to foreign students who are high level
table tennis players to come to the US to study English as a second language
(details will be forthcoming soon). This is an alternative to and in the short
run might be better than the traditional
college scholarships. The amount of the scholarship is smaller and therefore
easier to obtain. The students will have more time for table tennis and will be
utilized to work with collegiate students in the program or at other nearby
colleges and clubs. In these non-academic activities, the students could work
as coaches or training partners to pay for their living expenses. I will
identify and help these foreign players come to the US as part of the strategy
to develop our own elite players.

As you can see, I have contributed to collegiate table tennis and have specific
plans to continue to concentrate on the next steps over the next four years. I
do not make a living from table tennis as a coach, event promoter, or supplier
and will not have to restrict my activities in deference to USATT's and the
USOC's conflict-of-interest provisions. I will, therefore, be able to make
proposals, particpate in discussions and budget allocations, and actively take
part in all USATT's decisions regarding collegiate table tennis.

Please check out my supporters and those who have written a testimonial for me
at www.sheripittman.com. They include five of seven 2004 Olympians including
one (Tawny) who is still a college student, former Olympians, college players,
current Board members, those who have benefited from or appreciate my work in
the Community Olympic Development Program. These people publicly support me
because they believe in what I have done, and what I can do in the future.

For those of you who want to vote based only on one issue, that ’s all right
with me. I am running on my track record, including my position on collegiate
table tennis and my vision for it during next four years. I urge you to compare
my vision and my accomplishments with those of my opponents. I hope that you
will keep an open mind, consider the foundation that had to be laid to enable
USATT to be in a position to make the commitments I can now make to you, and
make your decision on whom to vote for president accordingly. Thank you for
giving me this chance to present my candidacy to you.

Sincerely,

Sheri Pittman
Incumbent Candidate for USATT President

Dear NCTTA members,
Below (cut and pasted) are the statements released by Mr. Christian Lillieroos
in regards to his view on college table tennis. As many of you know already, he
has been NCTTA's Texas Division director for years.
Please be active and make your votes count in this upcoming USATT election.
Ballots are arriving soon!

Sincerely,
Jack

Dear NCTTA constituents,

Thank you for giving me this precious opportunity to re-iterate my college table
tennis experiences and outline my future plans as a candidate for USA Table
Tennis presidency. I wish to share with you my vision of a brighter future for
our sport.

However, last year, exactly 50% of our junior
varsity team members are rated under-1800 and I expect their proportion to
substantially increase in the near future.

2. National College Table Tennis Program Coordinator: Another unique problem
facing college clubs is the extremely high turn-over rate of club executives
from year to year. Once a club becomes inactive, it will have trouble receiving
budgets from school administrators in the future even when it is revived by
enthusiastic students. I wish to create a position within NCTTA and ACUI where a
national college table tennis program coordinator whose only task is to contact
school club executives directly and school administrators directly (whether they
are the Directors of Club Sport or Deans of Student Life) to ensure the
continuity of table tennis club programs from one academic year to the next. My
major objective is to use some of USATT's budget to pay the
coordinator part-time and create incentives for him or her.

My Club Support Initiative and creation of a part-time
national program coordinator will directly contribute to that goal by
stabilizing all club teams that compete in NCTTA.

In all, I firmly believe that the team model will foster more Cooperation and
lead to growth in college table tennis. A competitive table tennis environment
at the college level will have a trickle down and trickle up effect. In other
words, children will pick up paddles and junior players will continue
to train once they see that college table tennis can be an essential part of
their future.

Dear NCTTA members,
Please see the following important message from our president.
Jack

http://www.nctta.org/championship.html

For all teams that are considered the divisional front-runners to be invited to
the 2005 NCTTA National Championship, please go to this website to download
forms for financial assistance. Without these forms the NCTTA cannot legislate
how much funding it will be able to give out to interested schools.

Also for those schools that are close to qualifying for nationals it would
behoove you all to start fundraising and contacting your school to find out how
to procure extra funding. The basis on ANY financial assistance from NCTTA is to
prove that you actually developed your OWN source of funding thru fundraising,
outside funds, etc. If you ask for funding from NCTTA and do no kind of work on
your own then NCTTA won't help out in return.

Take a look at this fundraising option:

in the New York City division where three schools are embroiled in a 3 way tie
for first: Polytechnic, Rutgers and perennial powerhouse Colombia University.

3) NCTTA College Top 25
College Football has the Top 25 so why can't college table tennis? Well check
it! Now we do! Go to www.usatt.org/college and see if your school team has
cracked the top 25 list of College Table Tennis schools. Thanks to NCTTA Ratings
Director for his work on that.

4) ACUI Regionals
NCTTA promotes all college TT activities and in that we hope that each and
everyone of you participates in the ACUI Regional competition taking place in 15
different geographic regions across the country. For more info go here:

Dear NCTTA members,
Christian Lillieroos, our Texas Division Director, has a high level Swedish
coach contacting him regarding both studying in an U.S. college and possibly
playing/coaching for that institution, in exchange for scholarship covering
tuition + room and board. Please see Christian's e-mail cut and pasted below my
signature at the bottom.

That coach's academic interest is in pursuing a Master's degree in psychology
or possibly PhD. As far as I know, many institutions do offer automatic
scholarship for students enrolling in Ph.D. programs anyway so if that coach is
accepted to the Ph.D. programs directly, then I do not see a problem of him
coming to the U.S.

Anyway, if you are interested in arranging for such arrangements, then please
contact Christian at clillieroos@... or texas@.... I know that
almost all table tennis teams are currently operating at the sports club level.
However, some of our more established clubs, such as Hopkins, MIT, etc. might
consider doing some information collecting work for that coach from Sweden (such
as looking into your own school's psychology department, admissions criteria for
graduate studies, etc) and possibly influencing his decision to join your
school. Furthermore, Canadian universities have excellent higher education
programs along with very affordable tuition. You can do your own sales work as
well.

Thanks!
Jack Wu

All NCTTA schools,
I have information that could interest you for next season.

A high level Swedish coach contacted me, who was one of my coaches when I was a
junior and also worked with Mikael Appelgren and J-O Waldner, and he is
interested to come to USA and coach for a University team next school year. He
would do the coaching in exchange for a full scholarships including room and
board. His academic interests are in a Masters in Psychology or maybe even a
PHD.

This will give the team a much bigger boast than if you had a good player. On
top of that he is not a bad player either (around 2400). When he was younger he
was junior national champion in Sweden.

If you approach your school it is possible they can see the benefits in that for
the school and grant a scholarship. This is much easier to arrange than a
salaried position as a coach. He speaks good English and has been to USA 2 times
before already. His name is Alf Knutsson and is very well known in Europe.
If you think you have an interest in this, email me and I give you his contact
info.

Sincerely
Christian Lillieroos

Dear NCTTA members,

The National Collegiate Table Tennis Association is looking for new
officers for the 2005-2006 NCTTA season. NCTTA
is a recognized 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization
and expanded considerably to include 16 active divisions and more
than 100 schools. Without dedication and hard work of our officers,
NCTTA would not have become as successful as it is today. We hope to
continue our success in the upcoming season with help of new
officers. One does NOT have to be a student to be an officer of
NCTTA, we encourage working professionals and schools alumni to come
and step up along with students.

Working in NCTTA one can generally count on putting in anywhere from
5 to 10 hours per week, mostly in the online variety thru email or
chat rooms, though sometimes teleconferences are needed. One needs to
have access to email regularly and furthermore know how to use
NCTTA's email system as one is expected to use our email for NCTTA
business.

I would personally encourage anyone who is passionate about College
Table Tennis to get involved as the NCTTA is a very young
organization where you can look to get involved immediately and
develop a foundation in the arena that you are passionate about.
Currently the positions are all volunteer and there is no pay per
say, as much as the intangible reward one gets from making a
difference in a concept, ideal that is bigger than all of
us...College Table Tennis!

The positions available are:

President
Vice President
Treasurer
Recruitment Director
Public Relations Director
Historian
Registrar's

Division Director Representative (election of this person happens
after Division Directors are chosen)

Division Directors:
-Upstate NY
-New England
-Mid-Atlantic
-Carolina
-Midwest
-Northwest
-New York City
-Texas
-Georgia
-Florida
-Northern California
-Southern California
-Ohio
-Virginia
-Dixie
-Kansas

If you are interested in running for a position, please submit your
personal information (questions listed below) to elections@...
by Monday May 9th. All club presidents are eligible to vote in NCTTA
elections and those interested in running and their statements should
be online shortly after May 9th.

1. Name:
2. Interested Position:
3. Age:
4. School
5. School Year:
6. If you are not a student, where did you go to school:
7. How long have you played table tennis?
Submit a One page formal statement of intent that will include:
Why do you want to work as an officer of NCTTA?
What have you done so far in terms of organizing any campus or
national activities whether within table tennis or outside of it?
Please also provide a list of references and their contact info (ex.
your
division director, the director of your dept of recreation, a member
of
the NCTTA board who has worked with you extensively, etc.).

The election will be held according to the guidelines stated in the
NCTTA constitution and bylaws.

Look at the NCTTA Forum (Public Forum) for copies of what each
position's duties and responsibilities are.
