The US Open <http://www.usatt.org/events/2008_usopen/index.html> is one of the largest annual table tennis events in North America, attracting some of the top table tennis players from not just around the country, but internationally as well. In an effort to spread the word about college table tennis, NCTTA will be setting up an information table at the US Open <http://www.usatt.org/events/2008_usopen/index.html>, July 2-5 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
If you have information about your school's table tennis program (flyers, brochures, that type of thing) that you'd like NCTTA to make available at the event, please mail it to:
NCTTA 2322 5th Street #204 Santa Monica, CA 90405

In this month's newsletter we'll talk some about the recent past (2007-2008 Membership Growth), a little about the present (Superlative Award Winners) and a lot about the future (Board Nominations/Elections, 2009 Championships Location, NCTTA Committees and a new Newgy-NCTTA Scholarship Program). Board Nominations and Elections
Run for the board, become a division director, join a committee ... lots of ways to get involved. Ever wanted to get more involved in NCTTA? Like to help set the direction of the organization? Have ideas about how to take NCTTA to the next level?

Plus one lucky Men's/Coed team (Puerto Rico) and one lucky Women's team (Columbia) each won a brand new Newgy robot in a special drawing at the 2008 Championships! Thanks to Newgy for their continued generous support of College Table Tennis!
2009 Championships Return to Rochester
Rochester, MN narrowly edges Atlanta, GA and New Haven, CT to host 2nd straight Championships The bidding process for the 2009 Championships began last December when the Championships bid information was made available to several hundreds of colleges, universities, sports commissions and visitors bureaus. After fielding inquiries from dozens of prospective host organizations NCTTA was excited to be able to choose between three quality bids:
Rochester, MN submitted by the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission
Atlanta, GA submitted by Ralph Presley representing Atlanta Table Tennis
New Haven, CT submitted by the Greater New Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau
Following a thorough evaluation of all the bids, many follow-up questions for each organization, and much discussion about the merits of each bid, NCTTA is delighted to announce that the 2009 Championships will be held in Rochester, Minnesota for the second consecutive year!
The final voting couldn't have been any closer, but after a very successful 2008 Championships, NCTTA is excited to be returning to Rochester for the 2009. We're confident we can make 2009 the best Championships ever!
NCTTA Adds 13 New Schools in 2007-2008
Record 121 schools joined NCTTA this past season NCTTA has enjoyed consistent growth throughout much of its history as an organization and 2007-2008 continued the trend. After a record 108 schools participated in NCTTA in 2006-2007, the organization set a new record in '07-'08 with 121 colleges and universities throughout the US and Canada participating.
With so many new schools joining the college table tennis community, we thought it might be good to highlight some of these new NCTTA schools that distinguished themselves with outstanding play during their rookie competition season. Head over to the Features section of the NCTTA website and check out the interesting profiles of table tennis teams from: Mississippi College, Puerto Rico (Rookie Team of the Year), Cal State Easy Bay, and Minnesota all of which participated at the NCTTA Championships.
Lets hope the growth continues with even more schools competing in 2008-2009!
Join a Committee
Committees are critical to NCTTA's success; join one and make a contribution Sure, people are always urging you to do things for a 'good cause': end poverty, fight hunger, cure cancer, recycle, save the whales. Well now you can add one more to that list, join an NCTTA committee. Ok, so it might not be on exactly the same level as the other causes, but if you care about college table tennis, don't you think it might be a good idea to contribute to improving college table tennis? And the best way to help college table tennis, of course, is to make a large six- or seven-figure financial contribution to NCTTA. But if you don't have a few spare mil. lying around, the next best thing is to join one of the many NCTTA committees:
Media Relations
Marketing
Financial
Championships
Women's
Alumni and College Relations
Rules and Audit
Website
Coaches
World University Games
Disabled Athletes
Recruiting
Ratings

Newgy-NCTTA Scholarship Progam Keep watching the NCTTA website as we're almost set to announce the details of a brand new national scholarship program, seeded with generous support from Newgy Industries, a long-time supporter of college table tennis. The wheels are in motion, things are happening ... really, they are. Stay tuned!

Lots of important topics in this month's newsletter: the results of a successful 2008 Championships, possible 2009 Championships locations, end-of-season superlative award nominations, plus upcoming NCTTA Board elections. Let's get right into it!
2008 Championships Recap Texas Wesleyan retains Men's/Coed and Women's Team Titles No question about it: making it to the College Table Tennis National Championships can be difficult. And we're not even talking about the qualifying part. With thousands of canceled American Airlines flights and heavy winds in Rochester, MN making even landing at the airport a dicey proposition, merely getting to the Championships proved an unexpected ordeal for many of the 34 teams that had earned the right to be there. But once in Minnesota, with the Championships underway, it was 3 straight days of college table tennis excellence.
Even the weather couldn't put a damper on things, with springtime highs registering a balmy 34 F outside the venue (for Minnesota, anything above freezing counts as balmy), while just inside the Rochester Regional Sports Center, the best of college table tennis battled for 8 different national titles in near perfect conditions. There were some familiar faces and a sizeable group of Championship newcomers; some dominating performances and some down-to-the-wire finishes. Just have to ask: 2008 College Table Tennis National Championships: Great Championships? Or Greatest Championships?
It's ok, take some time to think it over. Course there's not enough space here to cover all the details, so check out the 2008 Championships Website for full Results, Writeups and Photos. Congrats to the 2008 Champions:
Men's/Coed Team: Texas Wesleyan University
Women's Team: Texas Wesleyan University
Men's Singles: Alfred Najem, Emporia State University
Women's Singles: Ines Perhoc, Texas Wesleyan University
Mixed Doubles: Adam Hugh, Princeton University & Judy Hugh, Rutgers University
Men's Doubles: Adam Hugh, Princeton University & Tahl Leibovitz, Queens College
Women's Doubles: Jasna Reed & Ines Perhoc, Texas Wesleyan University
Paralympic Singles: Tahl Leibovitz, Queens College
Thanks to all the outstanding volunteers, the great support from the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission, Killerspin, Newgy, the Rochester TT Club and Table Tennis Minnesota.

2009 Championships Bids
Possible locations include Rochester, MN, Atlanta, GA and New Haven, CT "Quo vadimus" is Latin for "where are we going," or in this case, where is NCTTA going for the 2009 College Table Tennis Championships? As the 2008 Championships came to a close, attention turned to 2009 and NCTTA is busy evaluating possible locations. Bid information was made available to over 125 schools and hundreds of sports commissions and convention and visitors bureaus throughout the country. A wide variety possible host organizations contacted NCTTA from as far south as Orlando Florida to as far north as Gillette, Wyoming and just about everything in between.
NCTTA is excited to be able to choose between three quality bids:
Rochester, MN submitted by the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission
Atlanta, GA submitted by Ralph Presley representing Atlanta Table Tennis
New Haven, CT submitted by the Greater New Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau
Details of each of the bids have been posted on NCTTA's online forum. Feel free to peruse the bids online, ask questions and make comments to help in the selection process.

Spring competition gets underway with NCTTA division play and ACUI regional singles qualifiers; some current and former college standouts enjoy success at the US Olympic trials; plus, the 2008 Championships are coming and volunteers are needed. Read on to find out how you can help.
Spring Division Play Championships qualification at stake for winners of NCTTA's 17 divisions Seventeen NCTTA Divisions across the United States and Canada are battling in in February for the title of Division Champion and the chance to qualify to the 2008 College Table Tennis National Championships in Rochester, Minnesota. Many divisions are ultra competitive with multiple teams having a legitimate shot at the division title. Mid-Season Rankings this year were on average 500 points per team higher than last year! Expecting a great conclusion to the 2007-2008 college table tennis season in the weeks ahead. Check out the complete Spring schedule and results for all divisions on the NCTTA website.
Southern California Division
USC and UC San Diego have battled for dominance in the Southern California Division since the 2004-2005 season, with USC winning that year, but UCSD having the upper hand of late, capturing both the 2006 and 2007 division titles. After going undefeated with a convincing 4-1 victory over UCSD in the Fall, USC seemed poised to recapture the division crown. San Diego's Balboa Park Activity Center hosted the Spring divisional tournament and although UCLA, Caltech, and UC Irvine fought relentlessly throughout the day, it came down to USC vs. UCSD, just as it has the past 3 seasons. UCSD needed at least a 4-1 victory to win the division; it seemed possible after they won the first two matches. But USC rebounded to win the next two matches and secure their path to the Championships! On the women's side, USC enjoyed similar success, building on their undefeated Fall performance to capture the division title over Caltech and UC San Diego.
ACUI Regional Schedule Don't miss the ACUI singles qualifier in your region; check the schedule and register today! ACUI regional tournaments are coming up in February. These tournaments serve as qualification for singles and doubles entries to the 2008 College Table Tennis Championships. When and where is your regional tournament? Check the regional competition schedule. NCTTA Divisions are different than ACUI Regions, so if you're not sure which region you're school is in, check out this list of states and provinces in each region. Once you're ready, you can register for the tournament in your region online.

US Olympic Trials at Drexel University Two current NCTTA members advance to the North American Trials in Vancouver Han Xiao (Maryland) and Whitney Ping (Stanford) advanced to the North American Olympic Qualification Tournament for a chance to represent the US at the 2008 Summer Olympics. At the U.S. Olympic & National Team Trials held at Drexel University last month, more than half of the 21 players competing had come up through the college ranks, 7 being current NCTTA players. Han Xiao placed 2nd at the trials, securing his trip to Vancouver, where from April 4-6, he will compete to become one of just 3 men representing North America at the Summer Olympics. Whitney Ping placed 4th in the field of 9 women to earn her spot at the North American Qualifier, her 5-3 record edging Texas Wesleyan's Jasna Reed (4-4). Former college standouts Eric Owens (Texas Wesleyan) and Jackie Lee (UC Berkeley) also finished in the top 4 to move on to the North American Trials while Texas Wesleyan's Mark Hazinski (8-3) came out on the short end of a 3-way tie for 3rd place and ended up 5th, just missing qualification. Adam Hugh (Princeton), Judy Hugh (Rutgers) and Barbara Wei (University of Pennsylvania) also competed at the event. The 2008 Summer Olympics will be held in Beijing, beginning on August 8.

NCTTA is looking for people to help write-up short articles for the monthly newsletter you're reading right now. It's not a huge time commitment (maybe 5-10 hours a month) and it's a great resume builder; you can say that you wrote for a nationally, scratch that, internationally distributed newsletter. Plus, the best way to improve as a writer is to, well, write ... a lot. Course if you figure out a way to have the newsletter write itself, that would be okay too.
If you're interested in contributing to NCTTA by writing for the newsletter, please email us at info@... along with your name, school, major, and any qualifications/why you think you can help.

Division Results
With most Fall competition now complete, updated team rankings are expected in January
Dixie Division
What a difference a year can make! Last year in the Dixie Division, the University of Southern Mississippi went undefeated and earned themselves a Championship bid. Despite returning much of their roster from last year's team, the Dixie Division has played out a little differently so far this year. Playing on their home floor, Southern Miss. edged Mississippi State 3-2, but then lost to the University of New Orleans as well as newcomer Mississippi College, who turned in a strong NCTTA debut. Mississippi College could have secured control of first place in the division with a win over Mississippi State, but couldn't pull it out, losing 11-9 in the fifth game of the doubles. By virtue of the head-to-head win, Mississippi State sits in first place at 4-1 with Mississippi College in second with an identical record. Southern Miss, West Florida, New Orleans and Alabama (in that order) round out current standings on the men's/coed side.
Upstate New York Division
With 3 teams in the Pre-Season Top 25 (No. 4 Toronto, No. 8 Cornell and No. 17 RPI), the Upstate NY Division figured to be especially competitive; it didn't disappoint. Perennial overachievers, RPI, who despite being seeded near the bottom of the field, finished 4th at the 2006 Championships and 8th the 2007 Championships were looking to work some of their Championship magic during the regular season. RPI narrowly lost a nail-biter in doubles against undefeated Cornell (7-0), seeming to leave them as the second place team in the 8 team division, with a good chance at a third straight Championship bid. But a failed eligibility check and the resulting defaults dropped RPI to fourth (tied with Toronto and Rochester Institute of Technology, RIT). SUNY Buffalo instead sits in second at 6-1, with Ottawa a distant third at 4-3.
In women's competition, 5th-ranked Cornell edged 2nd-ranked Toronto, 3-2, even though the Toronto team had only three players and had to default two matches. Toronto's three were good enough to defeat both RPI and RIT to land in second place. Sets up an interesting match-up for the Spring, assuming Toronto can field a full women's team. Be sure to check out the photos from the meet.
Ohio Division
With Ohio State's number two player Michael Yao out with injury, would the tenth-ranked Buckeyes still be the team to beat in the Ohio Division's southern sub-division? With their ace Francois Charvet, who's compiled and impressive 30-1 regular season record since 2004-2005, and the timely arrival of promising freshman Dalun Tang, the answer seems to be yes. Ohio State defeated second place Marshall in convincing fashion, 5-0. In the Spring teams from both Ohio sub-divisions will come together to crown the division champion. With traditional rivals Michigan and Ohio State sitting at the top of their respective sub-divisions and an automatic berth to the Championships at stake, expect some fierce competition still to come in Ohio.
New York City Division
With junior stand-out Judy Hugh in her rookie season at Rutgers this year, the Scarlet Knights were looking to give last year's division winner and pre-season No. 15 Columbia a run for the division title. Coming off of a great performance at last year's Championships (they finished 5th), Columbia looked like they might have their hands full early on, with the match tied 1-1 against NYU. Michelle Yang and David Loeffler managed to hang on with victories in the 3rd and 4th matches for Columbia, but a much improved NYU team (with two women on the roster) was definitely the surprise of the New York City Division. With both teams at 8-0, it came to the deciding Columbia-Rutgers match. Judy Hugh proved too much for Victor Leung (3-0), but the remaining singles matches all went 5 games, with Columbia managing to win all 3 to secure the victory: Columbia's Felix Yu came back from a 0-2 deficit to edge Ben Huang, Michelle Yang defeated Adam Formal winning at deuce in the 4th and 5th games, and David Loeffler overcame Wing Sit. Even with the team outcome already determined, the doubles match too came down to the wire, with the Rutgers pair of Hugh and Formal coming through at 12-10 in the fifth. Rutgers is probably already preparing for the Spring rematch, although with 10 teams in the division, both Rutgers and Columbia have a good chance of qualifying for Nationals.
A record 5 women's teams turned out to compete at the Fashion Institute of Technology, with new teams Polytechnic and Cooper Union joining the returning women's teams from NYU, Stonybrook, and Columbia. A relatively convincing 4-1 victory over defending division champion NYU, leaves Columbia's women's team in command of the division.
Georgia Division
Several rookie teams joined the Georgia division, with 10 teams competing in Atlanta. As we've seen in other divisions this season, rookie teams are not to be taken lightly. The Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech were impressive in their first NCTTA outing, not dropping a singles match the entire day. Team captain Aneece Khalec, fresh off a Junior Olympics Doubles Championship, had his team ready to play, "the tournament went very well and the playing conditions were great." Somehow the conditions are always better when your team is winning. With 4 players rated over 2000, Georgia Tech isn't likely to stay unranked come the Spring semester.
The Georgia Tech men weren't the only ones serving notice as the team to beat, the rookie Lady Jackets also turned in an impressive performance, although their victories weren't quite as convincing as the men's team's. Still, with the division in the balance and Georgia Tech tied with the defending Division Champion Auburn Lady Tigers at 2-2 after singles, the match came down to doubles. Tied at 8-all in the 5th, Georgia Tech reeled off 3 straight points to earn the victory. No first meet jitters for these women. Auburn went on to finish second with the University of Georgia women in third.
Happy Holidays Whatever your plans until the competition season resumes in the Spring, NCTTA wishes you the best. Stay safe, keep practicing, and keep supporting college table tennis ... into the new year and beyond.

Division Updates
Four divisions have already played Fall tournaments
Virginia Division
Virginia Tech has made its claim as the team to beat in the Virginia Division, capturing 4 of the last 5 division titles (getting edged only by UVA in the 2005-06 season). The Hokies once again asserted their dominance, going undefeated on their home turf in the division's first meet. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) emerged from a one year hiatus with both a women's team and a strong coed team, challenging last year's division runner-up, 18th-ranked James Madison (JMU). The standings after the first meet have JMU in second and VCU in third, but expect a battle for second place and a possible Championship spot as the season progresses in what is traditionally an 8-school division.
Minnesota Division
Carleton College hosted teams from 4 schools for the first meet in the Minnesota Division's inaugural season. Think this division is going to take a few seasons of building and improving to put together a contender? Think again. The University of Minnesota comes out of nowhere with four 2000+ level players, and walked away from the tournament in firm control of the division. Made it look easy, without one of their players so much as dropping a single game, even against 2nd place finisher Iowa State. Not a bad team for their rookie season, eh?
Ohio Division
The Ohio Division is experimenting with a new format this season to best manage the relatively large number of schools participating in the area. Schools have been split into two sub-divisions, North Ohio and South Ohio, with teams playing just in their own sub-division in the Fall, then with both sub-divisions coming together in the Spring to decide the Division Champion. North Ohio was up first holding their meet at the University of Akron. Air circulation kept knocking over the cardboard barries setup for the competition, but otherwise the teams enjoyed themselves thoroughly, especially newcomer Ashland University. The University of Michigan, last year's Ohio Division winner, was looking sharp again and won this first outing, with Akron coming in second.
Northwest Division
Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, and Bellevue Community College joined the host school, Portland State University for a hotly contested competition that came down to the wire. Four of the ten team ties ended 3-2! Oregon managed to come through undefeated, with Washington and Portland State close behind. The remainder of the division schedule is sure to be intense; this is one division where the outcome will likely be in question until the last match is played in the Spring.

Welcome back students and coaches and all college table tennis aficionados! The 2007-2008 NCTTA intercollegiate table tennis season is upon us. College table tennis in the United States, Canada and even Puerto Rico is on the move with more active schools creating table tennis teams to join the NCTTA and compete on an intercollegiate level! We're very excited to add a new permanent Division this season, the Minnesota division. This division of course includes schools from Minnesota, but also from Iowa, it's neighbor to the south. ACUI Regional Schedule
College regional singles tournaments for Spring 2008 We here at NCTTA believe in an entire team approach to college table tennis. ACUI is a non-profit educational organization that conducts both regional and national table tennis tournaments involving college institutions across America. NCTTA is committed to promoting these and all college table tennis events. ACUI competition is an excellent opportunity for schools not connected with an NCTTA Division to get a taste of college table tennis. And for everyone else, well, it's another great competition opportunity and can help to establish a good relationship with your school's administration. So get involved, volunteer, and PLAY! USATT Team League
Looking for more ways to get your team some match experience? Sign your team up for the USATT Team League. The format is a little bit different than NCTTA's, but it's still TEAM table tennis and is a great way to enhance your college table tennis Experience. College teams can play in the 16-week league starting in January 2008. Email Penn State alum Tom Nguyen if you're interested.
If League play doesn't suit you, be on the lookout out other tournaments in your area that you can participate in. NCTTA encourages all college table tennis clubs to venture beyond their campus, become active in your local table tennis community, get noticed for your play, and increase awareness for your club. Check out the various USATT sanctioned tournaments and find one in your area.
