NCTTA annoucement part 2: finances   Message List

Dear NCTTA members,

1) Funding.... NCTTA is seeking corporate sponsors of any kind. The ones that
are popular with college students are credit cards, chain restaurants, sporting
goods, etc. If your club can find league sponsors, NCTTA can give out finders
fee (typically 10-15%) to your clubs. Of course, it depends on your school's
policy on obtaining outside funds for its sports club and if there is a problem,
equipment (tables, etc.) donnated to your school can be used in place.

2) new NCTTA Prospectus in pdf format, updated yesterday by myself, should be up
on our website soon. Again, document is for you to download and use to your
advantage when talking to your school official and maybe even local sponsors
[501(c)(3) non-profit status, 2003-04 schedule are all updated in it].

3) Tables deal - We are still talking to the manufacturer of the Stiga line of
tables. Currently, the Table Tennis Pioneers will offer 5% discount on all
tables bought by NCTTA member schools. If you want to buy 2 or more tables,
further discounts might be possible depending on table models. Please contact
TTP directly on the phone. Any problems, e-mail me and Sean at
sean@...

4) Please ask your club members to purchase from the Table Tennis Pioneers and
take advantage of the 5% discount. Each club should also receive a dozen free
3-star balls for club use and each division 2 dozens balls for league play. And
in return, please place a TTP link on your club website's main page if you have
one. It could be a banner downloaded from NCTTA website or a simple text link
(linked to http://www.ping-pong.com/shopping.php). Please do it within
reasonable means.

5) Following this fall meet, for the schools that are likely to qualify for the
nationals, it is NOW time to think about funding for the championship travel to
California. Some schools are blessed with full support from their institutions
(if they qualify, the schools will foot the whole bill) while other schools are
not so understanding (uh? table tennis is a sport?). Normally college sports
associations not only do not reimburse participants for traveling but also
charge teams exorbitant fees for participating in their "national championship."
(please see club soccer at http://www.nirsa.net/sc/soccer/2003/index.htm
They charge $675-825 per entry and people still have to fly to Alabama.
also see http://www.womensclubvolleyball.com/)

By contrast, NCTTA championships have traditionally been on an invitation-only
basis and the organization has also reimbursed travel costs. NCTTA intends to
do the same this year but with 17 teams flying to california, reimbursement will
not be much. Therefore, it is time for clubs to consider doing things to
consolidate relationships with their institutions to obtain the necessary
fundings.

Hey, if club soccer (not varsity soccer) can shell out $825 for entry fee + more
than $200 per player to fly to a single tournament event, then it is all about
getting the appropriate recognition from the university. Table tennis clubs can
do the same!

If despite all these, getting recognitions from the university still poses a
problem, some fund raising campaigns are required (info in NCTTA website's
document section). Also see above, section 1, you can start asking for sponsors
locally (place their name on your team uniforms). And if the sponsors are
national chain and want to sponsor the league instead, then NCTTA will give you
finders' fees.

It is all about advance planning...... I will be working on airline
sponsorship this coming week....

Cheers,
Jack
NCTTA vice prez
