Thanks to Tony for making up the course we rode on and for being such a good natured leader and arranger--and thanks so much for the roadside Subway sandwiches! Thanks to Branson, Mike, Jerry and anyone else who did the work to make the Natty Green's scene happen. Hanging around with everyone in the cozy upstairs room (with food!), getting to visit with the riders and their families was great. If it happens again next year, Tom and I intend to stay over Saturday night. Mary Florian

I agree with Chuck and Sara: Great ride(s) and celebration in all regards.
The "free radical" took the deviant "Moonshine" 100km route to Madison, NC,

Yes, a big thank you to Tony (awesome route!), Branson (awesome venue & party!) and all other organizers of the ride and party, it was so much fun to see everyone and ride and socialize and celebrate a great year of riding for all.
And a big thank you to Gary for not letting me talk us out of the 200K (I was nervous about the hills) - it was a challenge, and well worth it. :)
Happy riding everyone!

p.s. Chuck - Mike's award was for "Volunteer of the Year".

Jerry and John were very good company for the ride in and their pace was about perfect for this late autumn tourist.
The party was a hit and a good venue for it. For what it's worth, I would have called all the awards just the way they were called and Nina and I are still laughing over Mary's, "And I finished."
I know Mike won an award for something, but it's the only one I couldn't hear. Congratulations to all of you and to all of us because we're the North Carolina Randonneurs and we all did a good job this year.

Thanks to all who have pre-registered or emailed me to let me know you
plan to ride either the 100k or 200k route!
Things have been hectic here, I will try to get more info posted later
tonight. Que sheets and brevet cards will be available for those who
have pre-registered.
Start and finish for both RUSA brevets which have been approved by RUSA
will be at
http://maps.google.com/places/us/greensboro/s-elm-st/345/-natty-
greene's-pub-&-brewing
Natty Greene's Pub & Brewing
345 S Elm St, Greensboro, NC
(336) 274-1373
bigdraft.com
Both events will start at 7am
There was some discussion about a later start for the 100k, so Note: if
some of you want to start later, don't need the 100k to count as RUSA
credit and want to ride the 100k route, it is up to you if, when or how
you start, ride, distance, etc.
The cue and routes will be posted later today or early tomorrow. If I
have time I'll try to get a gps file for those that may want to use a
gps.
Also thanks to those that have helped plan the Shindig! If you have any
questions about the Shindig, please refer those to Branson or one of
the other 'Shindig' planners. Please understand that the Shindig is not
a Bicycle for Life event due to the availability of alcohol at the
event. We have nothing against reasonable alcohol consumption, but due
to current insurance reasons we cannot be a host for the Shindig this
year.
Have a good day!

Thanks to everyone who sent good wishes and support as my wife and I traveled to Korea to adopt a little boy. We're still getting over jet lag but doing well all things considered. I've included Aubrey's picture here. Thanks to Uncle Jack Warman for the "Eat Sleep Ride: Baby Edition" t-shirt!
I hope y'all will have the party swinging by the time Gary and I roll in from the 200K! Gary was sick most of last week (but not H1N1), now on the upswing, so we are hoping he will be 80-90% come Sat.
Looking forward to seeing everyone,

Thanks for the reminder! I just signed up for the ride. Gonna pass on the party
as the ride is likely gonna take me at least 11 hours ('til 6:00, if not
more/later) and I'll want to get back home to Durham at a decent hour. See y'all

Hi Branson and Tony,
First of all thank you for putting this all together. I know that takes a lot of
effort to put one of these rides together, especially with all the post ride
activities that are planned.
Is there any way that the 100k start can be pushed back to 10am? A few of us
that are considering riding the 100k are not getting hotel rooms Friday evening,
so that makes for a very early start to the day to make the trek to Greensboro.
Then if the 100k riders do start at 7am, I know that I can cover that distance
in 4 to 5 hours, so I'll be done by 12 noon. Even if I had a hotel reservation
for Saturday, check in time is at 3pm. So what to do in the mean time? Please
don't suggest getting a hotel room for Friday night, I'm on a budget and not
planning on getting a hotel room at all. Dean generously offered the use of the
shower in his room after the ride.
A 10am start for the 100k would have the riders finish at 2 to 3pm or later,
then be able to check into their room(s), shower and change to get ready for the
party scheduled to start at 5.
I've had several conversations with Alan regarding his August ride. He staggered
the start times of 6am and 10am so that both groups would finish at around the
same time; 7-8-9 hours or more for the 200k and 3-4-5 hours or more for the
100k. Then at the cookout socialize and spend time with riders we don't usually
ride with.
Again, thank you for organizing this event,
Mike O

A local chapter of les Cyclos Escargots is planning to ride this Sunday. So far, three of us will be slithering out of Benson at daylight. If you are late, you can follow our slime trail, glistening in the morning sun.
Our biggest fear of course is the gorgeous forecast: sunny, warm weather---since snails are subject to dessication. But we plan to go slow, imbibe plenty of water, eat a lot, enjoy the scenery, and find our way back, hopefully in the dark.

++++++++++++++
Saturday, November 21st is shaping up to be a great time!
Things kick off in the morning, as RBA Tony Goodnight is kindly sanctioning two RUSA rides: a 200K brevet and a 100K populaire. Both will start in downtown Greensboro at Natty Green's Pub. The routes will travel to Stokesdale where they will begin the loop made famous by Richard and Joel Lawrence as the Sauratown 200K. But save your legs! We're running counter-clockwise this time, which means the main chunk of climbing on the 200K is in the last half of the ride. The 100K will be an out and back route to the Dan River Coffee House in Madison. Both rides will feature rolling, even hilly terrain, but neither will be tough. With fall colors at their peak, both routes will be spectacular. Rides will be $15.
After the rides, we'll get the party started at Natty Green's Loft at 5:00pm. We'll have heavy hors d'oeuvres for everyone, but those wanting more substantial fare can order off the menu and pay separately. Our hosts will have several Natty Green beers on tap, with which you're welcome to run up a tab of your own. There will be a short program starting at 7:30pm, featuring an event video and the first-ever NC Randonneur Awards! ("The Randys?" My wife Loree says no.) To defray the Loft rental and the catering, there will be a cover charge for adults of $15 each. Children under 27 are free.
After a great day of riding and a night of socializing and tall tales, downtown Greensboro's historic Biltmore Hotel is offering us charming and affordable rooms within stumbling distance of Natty Green's, just one block away. Standard rooms start at $109 a night, but they've offered us a discount to $99 a night if we reserve 10 rooms. Loree and I have reserved one, so 9 more rooms and we all get a break! Call and say you're with the "NC Rand" group.
That's it for now. Even more details still to come..

Hey there,
I'm one century+ ride away from completing the UMCA's Year-Rounder and
wanted to find out if anyone was planning on doing a 200K (official or
permanent) in the Raleigh/Durham area within the next 45 days or so.
For my purposes, it'd have to be on a Saturday or a holiday, and I'd
prefer one that's more flat than not. :) Anyone planning a ride?
If I'm destined to do a solo, anyone have any suggestions? I'd
ostensibly be starting from home (within a mile of the intersection of
Roxboro & Infinity/Latta in Durham). I've done from home to Siler City
(a nice ride that I'd do again), to Danville (hilly and windy), and to
Virgilina (desolate). I'd been thinking of trying a
Greensboro-and-back or a Triangle "lake loop" that hits Jordan,
Shearron Harris, Crabtree, and Falls Lakes (with some smaller lakes in
between).

Not sure exactly how the start was originally came about, but you can
kinda blame the final decision on me since I sent in the approval to
RUSA which has still not got back to me. As soon as RUSA lets me know I
will post the official route, etc.
The routes do stay together as planned to the first control which
should give time for some riders to visit along the way that are or may
not going to the shindig later in the day. Since most of the time the
starts are manned by me and I usually ride or go along the route is
probably one of the reasons that both rides start at the same time
07:00 am. As for who will be at the finish for the 100k riders to check
them in, I'm not sure at this time. It is doubtful that I will ride the
200k that day and if I do ride one of the routes that day, it will be
the 100k.
If someone wants to pre-ride either route please let me know.
Have a good day!

Hi Branson,
I saw the NcRandon site about the timings for the 200K/Populaire
event. The 200K event starts at 7 AM (which I get); so does the
populaire? I was interested in the populaire, but did I read correctly
that it starts the same time as the 200k? Seems like the RUSA anniv
version of the populaire had a staggered start at 10 AM -- which
didn't make sense to me then because of starting in prime heat, but a
later start for the pre-Turkey populaire might not only make it more
sane, but also allow for a sensible drive-out from Cary!
Can you show us the way, please?

I thinly you'll enjoy reading today's blog posting of Keith's pursuance and
attainment of the R-12 yesterday. I find it rather inspirational. I could go on
but I don't want to take away nor add to anything he says. Suffice it to say
that I rode with Keith last December on the coldest brevet/Permament I've ever
ridden. Go Keith!
