We are not talking Randonneurs here.  It is a weight weenie thing to be sure.

We are the people who wrap duct tape around our pumps so we can boot tires quickly.  I even carry a chain breaker.

There are clincher rims that have a supposedly smooth surface and no
hole for the tube to explode into that do not require rim tape.

>>> bikerumor.com:

Shimano is stating that their WH-7850-C24-CL and WH-7850-C50-CL
clincher wheelsets may be prone to punctures due to the surface
texture of the rim combined with the use of spoke-hole plugs.

The instructions for fixing this problem (basically, just use rim
tape) are here.
http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/content/cycle/seh/nl/en/news___info/correcti\
ve_action.html

From now on, all Shimano wheels will be shipped with rim tape, and
dealers are supposed to provide you with free rim tape if you have
these wheels. This info was found on Euro websites, so it may not be
an issue here in the states.

Hello all

The RBAs have submitted their date request for ACP events and some RUSA
events for 2009. More RUSA events can be added during the year. I can't
tell you what the dates are until RUSA approves the calendar. There
should be a good range of events to allow ya'll to ride and gather K's
for your awards throughout most of the year. RUSA did discourage too
many ACP events and ACP events from Oct 1 thru Dec 31 but did suggest
that those months be RUSA events.

I imagine that many of you have areas/routes that you like to ride and
might would like to share with other RUSA members. Some of you have
established permanents, so if that is something that you would like to
please do set those up. If you need any help with the routing etc.
please let me know and I'll see what I can do to help you with a
permanent you want to establish.

If you have a good route that you would like to submit for brevet but
don't want to make it permanent because of the responsibilities that go
along with owning a permanent, let me know what that route is off list.
I would be willing to look it over on a map to start with and talk with
you some about maybe making it a route that is available for a
particular brevet which could be used for a RUSA or ACP event during
the year.

If you would like to semi-host a brevet, an arrow, a dart or help with
getting a new route established, for a particular area, please let me
know off list so we can talk about it.

I have some ideas for new routes for most of what I already put on the
schedule for 2009, but there may be room for your input and for some of
your routes to possibly be included for the events. There are some time
constraints so please get your ideas to me soon.

Have a good day!

As the calendar year winds down we have a few great cool weather rides left:

Sat 10/11: Uwharrie Mountain Festival Rides—Troy
Sun 10/12: NCBC Fall—Raleigh
Fri 10/17: Red Oktober Swap Meet & Social—Greensboro
Sat 10/18: Showdown at Black Creek
Sat 10/25: Tour de Nantahala (the Smokies)—Bryson City
Sat 11/01: Habitat for Humanity 100—Durham
Sat 11/08: Mattamuskeet Fun Ride—Swan Quarter
Sat 11/08: Ansonville Homecoming Uwharrie Mtn Festival Rides—Anson

Spring & Fall are spectacular riding around here. Too many events are
concentrated in the summer heat. Spring blossoms almost match fall
foliage, but for me Autumn wins because of:

     * Spring pollen! and
     * drier Fall weather.

Plus, late in the season we're better prepared to pedal hard enough to
stay warm.

The Uwharries are a great place to ride. Al Johnson's 400km brevet
treats us to the splendor of that region in May, but we miss the Fall
colors. Fortunately there is a ride in the Uwharries this Saturday.

Nights start earlier and end later now--don't forget your lights!

Did you know the half-a-billion year old Uwharries used to peak a mile
higher than the Rockies? Hundreds of millions of years of erosion
have worn them down to more manageable cycling heights, smoothly
curved their profiles, and given them a thick soil base to support
lush vegetation and wildlife. Watch out for deer and turkey crossing
those quiet roads.

Also when you're out there keep an eye out for Larry Kissell, a high
school social studies teacher who is running for U.S. Congress--he's a
recreational and commuter cyclist and proudly proclaims it on his web
site: "Avid Cyclist, over 33,500 miles logged since 1997", "Favored
mode of transport: Trek 5200 bicycle.". NC had two representatives in
the Congressional Bike Caucus, until the guy from Asheville lost
re-election. Lets get another cyclist in so that Brad Miller isn't
the only North Carolinian in the CBC.

I may be a little biased, but this should be a terrific ride for fall
foliage and mountain views - possibly worth the trip.

Hope some of you can make it.

Branson,

I do not have a head count on this, but other riders are welcome to join
us, so please let me know if you are interested. The more, the merrier.

This is a fairly flat course with many miles of quiet rural roads. We
had a great time on the inaugural ride, and Dean rode it last weekend.

Registration proceeds will be donated to the Mountains to Sea Trail, a
very worthy cause.

Thanks, Mike / Raleigh

Hello all

Please help us keep the info stored inside of the NCRandonCyclists info
up to date. The file storage is limited but I think we can get good use
out of what is available. Listed below are some areas and suggestions
for use of the Yahoo services for the group.

Remember that only member of the group have access to the below pages,
so you must be logged in to view those pages (that way the spammers
will not bother us as much)

Files/Photos: Members (upload/modify/download files)
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncrandoncyclists/files/
http://sports.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncrandoncyclists/photos

Links: Members (create/modify/delete links)
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncrandoncyclists/links

Polls: Members (create/modify/vote in polls)
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncrandoncyclists/polls

Calendar: Members (create/modify/delete events)
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncrandoncyclists/cal

I have added a new folder for the links section for Permanents and
added the names for each one. Please take the time to update and
maintain complete info so that riders can have access to your permanent
info
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncrandoncyclists/links/
NC_Permanents_info_001223299897/
Those of you who have Permanents or who establish them, please use this
folder to store and maintain links and basic descriptions about your
permanents.

Please use the files section for permanent detailed info
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncrandoncyclists/files/
NC%20Permanents/
You may store your actual files for your permanents: route images - que
sheets in text, xcel, and pdf formats - other forms that you may have
that you want riders to have access to.
Please then add a link to those files inside of the respective links
folder for your permanent.
Remember to maintain a copy/backup of your own since we can not control
what happens inside Yahoo itself.

Anyone can see the home page
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncrandoncyclists/ and the messages
page, but only members can post messages.

When posting messages with reply or forward, please remember to not
include anyones email address in the body of your post so that the spam
robots may not have an opportunity to harvest the addresses of yours or
your friends.

Thanks for your help with this. If you have any question, please let me
know.

Have a good day!

Sorry about that, I guess I should have included that with my original email.

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/nc/whitsett/34284967359

The ride starts in the parking lot of the shopping center right off of Rock Creek Dairy Rd. at exit 135 (I40/85). There's plenty of parking, a Food Lion for last minute supplies, as well as McD's, Bojangles, Jersey Mike's, Wholly Guacamole, Chinese take-out and an Italian restaurant for refueling after the ride. There's also a 24hr Exxon across the street. The ride ends at my house and, if you ride between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you can jump in the pool across the street to cool off (suits are mandatory - something about regulations and not scaring children...)

I hope this route sees some good use. If it does, I've got a 300k 'lollipop' route that goes around Hanging Rock and Pilot Mt that I'd like to submit and a 400k route that I've mapped, but haven't ridden, that I would like to submit if I can find controls that work out.

In the back of my mind, the grand scheme is to offer to host these as additional brevets to an expanded calendar at some point in the future if that's at all possible. But for now, I'll stick to seeing if I can pull off hosting a 200k permanent - you know, baby steps and all that...

Hope to see some of you out this way!

there's a 1200km in PA?
if its RM sanctioned, RUSA needs an update of the "longer brevets"
page. http://www.rusa.org/1200kms.html

NC should establish our own virtual "grand livre" online recording nc
randonneurs accomplishments at 1200km+ events.
specs:
- plain html table ok (its not big enough, or changing often enough,
to need a database app)
- full name (gender)
- event
- year
- time/dnf
- distance
- team/division
- link to write-up & photos
- link to official event results, if online
- bike type (tandem, single speed, bent, trike, fixed, etc.)
- weather?

e.g.:

| Richard Lawrence (M) | RAAM | 1998 | 9d1h7m | 2906mi | (4) 70+ |
[write-up] | [results] | softride | 56F-90F |

Starts/Ends near my house between Burlington and Greensboro and follows mainly quiet, secondary roads up through Mayodan to the turn around in Danbury (Hanging Rock State Park). Should be a really nice ride now that fall is here!

Miserably hot.

I am thinking of doing the Endless Mountains 1200 in PA. why? Because
it's there and I'm stupid.

A party is a good idea anytime.

will that make wes the first nc randonneur to ride the gold rush?
maybe the lawrences have ridden the gr?
if wes is the 1st, will that mean nc randonneurs have completed all
the 1200ks in the usa ?
if so, we should throw a party. if not, maybe we should throw a party
anyway?

how hot does it get in that area in july ?

Jerry,

I stand behind Caroline on that comment.  Thank you for your enthusiasm and support of cycling both for RUSA and NC.  You are a great inspiration.  I will buy two of each when they are approved.

I second that. Thank you for taking on what has turned out to be a cumbersome project, Jerry. It remains a greart idea. I will certainly purchase at least one wool cap. Your efforts are very much appreciated!
