Hello guys,
It seems that the practice session are coming along ...
Anyway, you guys need to think seriously about the next workshop
because Sifu's schedule is pretty tight. The next available window is
in the months of June or July.
If y'all do want to invite sifu back, please figure out who wants to
be the organizer etc.
that's all. practise hard ...

Hello everyone,
While we're on the subject of practice times, I'd like to put my vote
in for Wednesday and Sunday. Tuesdays and Saturdays aren't
particularly good for me, although my Saturdays will likely free up by
the summer since I will lose my space to the American Dance Festival.
I thought I'd ask how people felt about practicing outdoors. The
weather is turning more and more spring-like (i.e. warmer) everyday.
If we're not constrained to practicing indoors, finding a suitable
practice time/venue becomes a little easier. The big downsides to
being outdoors are the potential for rain and the rampant pollen
during certain weeks of spring. Anyhow, it's a suggestion that I
think is worth exploring.

Hi Gabe and all,
Tuesday is out for those of us with taiji class with Johnny.
I can do any of the other times listed, I would prefer wednesday nights
and sundays personally.
For some reason I didn't get Al's email... has anyone else been not
getting email?
Thanks,
Ben

Hi All,<BR>
<BR>
I spoke with Steve about the contact person thing... I personally <BR>
think that if it's one or the other, he is better for the group <BR>
since he has a venue and contact with a larger network of interested <BR>
people, as well as being more firmly entrenched in the area. <BR>
However, this also means that he has a lot on his plate already, and <BR>
he expressed a desire to have help with keeping it together... So, <BR>
we decided that what makes the most sense is to work together on <BR>
organizing the group's activities, and if one of our names has to be <BR>
put down eventually then we'll decide at that time. We are both very <BR>
interested in seeing this group grow and progress, and I think he <BR>
agrees that there's no reason form should get in the way of <BR>
function. So for now, I'll be the actual liason and help with the <BR>
clerical duties, and work closely with Al and Steve on the <BR>
organization. <BR>
<BR>
On that note, we need to decide on practice times/locations. Steve <BR>
is graciously offering his dojo for us to use after his classes end <BR>
on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. There is also some time Sunday <BR>
morning before class. His students like to use the mats a little bit <BR>
after practice, so we should be mindful of that and wait until about <BR>
8:30 pm on Tues. and Wed., and 8:15 pm on Thursday. If we do a <BR>
Sunday morning practice, then we should finish by 1 pm. There are <BR>
also a couple spaces on the side we can use to warm up if we get <BR>
there and they're still rolling... <BR>
<BR>
So, let's hear what times are good for everybody, and if there are <BR>
any more venue possibilities then post 'em. Tuesday night is out for <BR>
me personally as long as we are still having Taiji during that time, <BR>
but I can do any of the other three. <BR>
<BR>
Al, do you have any particular time slots in mind? I think two <BR>
regular meetings a week is a good number, but it might also be a <BR>
good idea to have more if we can't find times that work for everyone.<BR>
<BR>
Anyway, let me know what you guys think...<BR>

Hello Everyone!
Hope you are doing well!
Contact Info:
I wanted to catch up on a contact information from last week. Gabe Mixon had
actually e-mailed me prior to Steven Kaufmann to volunteer as a contact person.
Now that Ryan has decided to opt out prior to his moving, you guys may want to
discuss which one of you should be the next contact person. I do not know what
the best way to decide is. But, here are some things to consider.
As a contact person their may be some responsibilities to the group we could
decide on. Of course introducing new members to the group would be the number
one priority, but we may want to consider organizing class and upcoming
workshops as well. Any suggestions anyone may have to give this a little order
would be greatly appreciated.
I think the point of having a study group that would bring Sifu Chin here to
visit would require a little membership growth and this should be a priority
for us. Also, the more people we have to touch hands with the better we will
get. So, please let me know what everyone thinks and I will e-mail Sifu Chin
with the new contact info.
Practice Schedule:
I cannot practice at 8:15pm on Thurs. for a variety of conflicts in my schedule,
though the Aikido school seems a wonderful place to practice.
The feedback I am assuming from last Sunday practice is it is a little to early
for the group and noone would like to pay the $5/person rental. So, I will not
be reserving the room for the group any longer.
As I mentioned at the workshop I will be practicing I-Liq Chuan in my class on
Sat mornings from 7:45am to 9am(Will be expanding time this Summer) and anyone
who would like to come is welcome. I am also open to more training times if
the group would like to have another round of suggestions. I think the 3 to
5pm slot on Saturday is great once Johnny is no longer leading his class that
day.
Lastly anyone who just wants to practice at any time or any day please feel free
to contact me and we can meet and train. Again, I beleive the more you touch
hands the better you will get.

All right, it appears that practice is on for this Thursday. Thanks
Steve for offering space!
I'll go ahead and post this Thursday's practice in the group calendar.
For those that don't know where Open Sky Aikido is, I've posted links
to both the Google map and the Open Sky driving directions in the

Lipyeow,
How are you? Thank you for the class structure information, I will send the
contact info to Sifu Chin today and look at dates for the next workshop. I
spoke to the group about scheduling the workshop after a summer Tai Chi
promotion I am the teacher for in my neighborhood so hopefully this will work
for everyone.

For me Thursday eve would not usually work (band rehearsals/recording
sessions are already scheduled then). Wednesday eve would be possible but
not very convenient (busy till ~7pm, then have to eat something - probably
have to be fast food - since waiting till after practice would be too long).

Thursday might be doable, but Wednesday would be better for me. If the
flow goes to Thursday night I'll try to rearrange my schedule to make it.

First off, I'd like to say I enjoyed getting together with everyone
that showed up on Saturday. It was good to review the drills and
share notes/thoughts.
On to group business:
1. Are we having a second practice this week? I believe Steve said
that we could meet one night this week at his dojo. I'll need to
check up on that. Who would come to something like a Thursday night
(8:15ish) practice?
2. In case you all haven't explored the yahoo group, I posted a few
links under the "Links" section to the iliqchuan.org website, the
workshop photos, and google maps to our current/potential venue
locations. I also posted a scanned in version of the workshop handout
in the "Files" section, so you can print yourself another one in case
you lose your current hardcopy. Lastly, I've been posting events and
tasks under the "Calendar" section to keep track of study group
practices and "to do" items for the group. BTW, I believe everyone in
the group can post to the files,links,polls,and calendar sections, but
if not, one of the moderators can probably change your group permissions.

Thanks Lipyeow,
We had our first practice this morning. Good stuff, it was very helpful
to get together in a group setting to compare notes and memories
regarding these basic exercises.
Thanks again for introducing us to Master Chin, his method is very
illuminating!

Subject: [nciliqchuan] suggested format for practice
<html><body>
<tt>
<BR>
Hello,<BR>
<BR>
In case you guys are wondering how to structure the study group<BR>
practice, i would suggest just running through the subset of basic<BR>
exercises that Sifu covered during last week workshop. See the notes<BR>
in the workshop handout. These include:<BR>
<BR>
Rocking (toe<->heel ... converging to the bubbling spring).<BR>
<BR>
Absorb and Project exercises<BR>
-wave up-down<BR>
-alternate hands wave up down<BR>
-wave side to side<BR>
-wave opening and closing<BR>
<BR>
"Bone-Marrow Washing" exercise<BR>
-pull down in a fist to absorb, push out with fist to project<BR>
3 stages: (1) feel the yin-suction when absorb, the
yang-expansion<BR>
when project, (2) reverse, feel the yang-expansion when absorb etc,<BR>
(3) feel both yin-yang when absorb or project.<BR>
<BR>
Open-Close exercise<BR>
-Hold ball and alternately open-close the left and right hip
joints.<BR>
Shoulders aligned over/with hips. EVERY JOINT should open
and close.<BR>
Keep the hands stationary.<BR>
<BR>
Horizontal plane<BR>
-horizontal wipe<BR>
<BR>
Frontal plane<BR>
-hold ball and do frontal circle. Note that hand circle and<BR>
abdominal circle goes in opposite directions.<BR>
-same, but open up the hands to N,S,E,W<BR>
<BR>
Sagittal plane<BR>
-energy should push into finger tips.<BR>
<BR>
Emphasis should be put on the absorb-project exercise, coz that's the<BR>
primary energy. In all exercises, all movements, you need to maintain<BR>
the weight going through the bubbling spring (no going to heels/toes).<BR>
<BR>
You can also redo all the absorb-project exercises with<BR>
opening-closing of hips as well.<BR>
<BR>
Sifu's classes here in NY all use the 15 exercises ... so you can't go<BR>
wrong sticking to them.<BR>
<BR>

Hello Guys,
I met Sifu today and this is a message from Sifu.
1) Can i have 1-2 persons volunteer as the local contact person for
the NC iliqchuan group? Note that the contact person's name +
email/tel will be listed on the main iliqchuan website. Please email
Sifu or Rosalie (or me) the info.
2) If you guys have any intention of inviting Sifu back for a second
followup seminar/workshop, start thinking of the dates now and
talk/email to Sifu/Rosalie with regards to scheduling, coz Sifu's
schedule can be pretty filled up at times.
regards,
Lipyeow
Hello everyone,
Just posting a reminder that we're having our first I Liq Chuan study
group meeting on Sunday at 8 a.m. We're meeting in Southern Village
in Chapel Hill at the O2 gym, after which Al will lead us our reserved
space. For those that need a map/directions, I posted a Google map
link to the location under the "Links" section of the yahoo group.
Also, we will need to discuss final venue/time for the study group
meetings.
