Jesse posed me this interesting question. Is D'Antoni going to make a
positive difference in NY?
Well a lot will depend on the draft. Will they get a good point guard
or not, will they trade up to get possibly 2 good players? I think they
should. The long term plan here is to make a play for LeBron James in 2
years. They need to set up everything to make that possible.
There's a limited amount of places LeBron could go that make sense.
Staying in Cleveland will net him the most salary from basketball. But
will they be able to surround him with good players? I don't think so,
and Z Big Ben will be done around that time.
Going to New York gives him the biggest stateside market of all. The
money he can earn on endorsements and other side activities in New York
should outweigh the loss of salary he takes for moving to another team.
Remember LeBron wants to be the first billionaire athlete and where
better to make that fortune than NY. But they need to surround him with
talent because he will want to win a lot of games. They should be able
to clear enough capspace to make it happen. Look for them to move up to
get OJ Mayo who is a good friend of LeBron.
Going to Houston would allow him to team up with Yao and an aging T-
Mac, this would expose him to 1 billion Chinese. Possibly as big if not
bigger a market then NY is. With Battier, Scola, Head and Alston you
have a nice core to surround LeBron with but could they free up the
money for LeBron, this would probably require a sign and trade.
Finally Hello Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Nets would have a decent chance
to sign LeBron, they would offer the NY market and Jay-z figures to be
around. With a good amount of capspace and Devin Harris around they
have a very small core to build around. A lot will depend on moving
Carter or Jefferson for young talented players.
With LeBron the franchise would be relevant again, i have no doubts
that he is the best player in basketball and will have improved his
jumper by that time to be unstoppable.
