You know I have to try and spin this deal to those
who don't understand. Small ball or run & gun, however
you like to put it, has not and will not win a
championship. It relies too much on your shooters
making their shots through a 100 game stretch,
including preseason and playoffs. And I include the
preseason because you have to get conditioned to play
that frenetic pace.
With the additon of Gasol, there are three possible
matchups with teams that were extremely unfavorable.
With the Spurs, although not as athletic, they boast
two 7 footers that can play together, as well as
Dallas. And the Lakers have to very skilled, athletic
7 footers. Imagine trying to get enough rebounds vs
those front lines with a center (that's really a pf)
that's 6'10" and a pf (that's a sf) who's 6'7". And
there's no way in hell that Brian Skinner is the
answer.
Throw in the fact that Marion was unhappy because he
wanted a max deal and not be the third wheel, we had
to get something for him before he opted out, which he
will. Banks never won the confidence of D'Antoni and
was making too much to be the third pg. So address the
size need and team chemistry before the All-Star
break.
We really need Shaq to be a presence in the middle
defensively. Just don't try to draw charges. He's
still a great rebounder, when healthy, and can ignite
the break. When the game slows down, when Nash is
resting, we can let Shaq become a playmaker. There's a
possibility that won't work. But there's also a
possibility it will. Even if it was desperation.
