Lebron James and USA Team, leading stars at FIBA World Championship
Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzi and Pau Gasol among top ten players by media
value.
USA is the most valuable team in terms of media impact generated by
the FIBA World Championship. It obtains 86 points, while the second
ranked team, Spain, has 36 points. A homogeneous group of four teams
follow, with 15-20 points apiece: France, Germany, Argentina and China.
Lebron James leads the players' media value ranking, with 15.6
points. This means that Lebron James presents a media value almost 16
higher than the average World Championship player. The second player
is Carmelo Anthony, followed by Dwyane Wade.
The Economics, Sport and Intangible Research Group (ESIrg,
www.unav.es/econom/sport) from the School of Economics and Management
of the University of Navarra has produced a report about the media
value of players and teams participating at the FIBA World
Championship in Japan. Data have been calculated using the effects of
the five games of the preliminary round plus the eight-final game.
Media Value is estimated by a combination of the number of web pages
each player generates (popularity measure) and by the news referring
to him (notoriety measure)
We find three non American players among the top ten players. Yao
Ming (China) takes the fourth place, followed by Dirk Nowitzki
(Germany) and Pau Gasol (Spain). All top ten players are NBA players.
Among top 20 players there are members of six different teams: USA (11
players out of 12), Spain (4), Argentina (2), China (1), Germany (1)
and Puerto Rico (1).
NBA players produce 58% of all FIBA World Championship media value:
their 38 players generate 160 points. The second national league is
the Spanish ACB, with a 15% share (33 players and 42 points), followed
by the Italian league (23 players and 11.5 points). Full details are
published on the ESIrg homepage (www.unav.es/econom/sport)
The report includes also some insights about the NBA media value,
obtained from the season 05-06 data. Kobe Bryant leads the ranking
(11.7 points), followed by Shaquille O'Neal (8.4), Lebron James (8.1),
Dwyane Wade (8) and Dirk Nowitzki (8). As regards the ranking of
teams, Miami Heat takes the lead, followed by Detroit Pistons and
Phoenix Suns.
