FYI, ride time weather, 47 degrees F, 4 mph N wind. Bring your woolies.
Balloon reports should be on 95.1 FM.

If you haven't heard or read about Greg Iles' speech Tuesday night at the Chamber of Commerce Gala, it is worth your time to do so.  He threw down the gauntlet to the business crowd.  The Democrat now has the video of his full speech online.  The first half is an entertaining story about his business dealings.  The second half sounds like a campaign speech, but he says he is not running for office.

We are helping out with the Phatwater Kayak Race and will not be riding Saturday.  The kayakers will leave Port Gibson at 8 AM and begin arriving under the hill around noon (42 miles).  We will be at the finish line recording time and scoring the finishers.  Come on down if you would like to see the finish or you can still register today and participate.

However, Sunday we will participate in the Baton Rouge Bike Club Century (metric).  We are pre-registered for the 62 miler and will ride rain or shine.  James is the only other one I know of for sure going.  Anybody else?  This year the ride starts from Jackson, LA and is about 80 miles from here.  I plan to leave Trippe's Western Auto (paved lot) about 6 AM Sunday which should allow time for registration and the ride at 8 AM.  The 100 miler starts earlier.  See the links and email below for details.

Let me know if you need a ride.

I have been missing the rides, but it just isn't in the cards right now. With
my treatment, it looks like it may be a while before I am back on a road bike.

My road bike is now for sale! It will be a great deal for someone. I bought
the bike a bit over two years ago from the bike shop in Natchez. It has been
ridden, but not a great deal. Better than new. Looks and performs like new at
MUCH less price!

The bike is a blue Giant OCR2 carbon fiber medium frame with all Ultegra
components and lollipop pedals. This is a great bike that has never been
wrecked and has only been "tuned" by the guys at the bike shop. It is there now
for cleaning (lots of dust from being in the closet) and tuning. You can see
the bike if you go by the shop.

I paid over $2,000 for the bike. Will sell it for $1,000. That seems to be in
line with internet prices. If someone is interested, let me know. I also know
that some of you have internet buddies that may be interested...spread the word.
As soon as I sell this one, I can buy a new bike from Chris to toodle around the
neighborhood.

Keep riding and be safe out there.

Cliff Merritt

No way.  Long Leaf wore me out and I haven't digested the double cheese burger yet.  Recommend Trace restaurant in Bassfield; http://www.bassfieldms.com/eating.htm  Plus the LSU game almost instigated an emergency room visit.

The Long Leaf dozen are all tired.  I doubt you'll get many takers.  Have fun.

Apparently the Yahoo Spam filters didn't like my first email.  Maybe the inclusion of long throught out caused a problem.  So I've abbreviated the trail name.  You get the picture.

Subject: [natchezbicycleclub] Saturday LLT Ride

It seems we have a good sized group shaping up for our trip to the LLT, and we will have riders of all levels.  Some do not plan to ride the whole 88 mile round trip and the LLT is a perfect environment for riding as much or as little as you want at your pace.  All are welcome and I am sure we can find a seat for you on the trip over.

Here is the basic itinerary and approximate times:
>6:00 AM depart Armory parking lot.  We can consolidate vehicles and car pool.  I can carry 4 extra bikes and people in addition to Beth, the tandem and I.  I'll also have an ice chest for water bottles and such.  Plan your breakfast so as not hold others up.
>8:00 AM arrive LLT trailhead in Prentiss.  It is a straight shot from Natchez on Hwy 84.  Not sure of the turn to the park, but Prentiss is not that big.  Mount and ride ASAP.
>12:00 noon lunch in Bassfield.  Most of the group will ride down to Hattiesburg and head back.  Others will ride out and back as far as they want, and be in Bassfield for about 12:00.  Bassfield is 11 miles from Prentiss, so that is 77 miles round trip and I am estimating 3.5 - 4 hours for that trip.  We will eat lunch at the Trace Restaurant; on Hwy 42 just east of Hwy 35 4 way stop.  http://www.bassfiel dms.com/eating. htm
>2:00 PM approximate time to leave Prentiss.
>4:00 PM approximate arrival in Natchez depending on DQ stops on the way back.

There are plenty of water and restroom stops along the Long Leaf, but you obviously want to carry a full load of water.  Also, 77 miles is a long way before lunch, so pack "on the bike" snacks.  Terrain is mostly flat with slight incline / decline since it is on an old railroad bed.

Two things to be careful of:  Road crossings, yield to vehicles and indicate when you are slowing if others are behind you.  The other is paceline riding.  With the road crossings, there may be acceleration and deceleration of the group.  Be mindful of those behind you and don't "zone out" and follow too closely.  We look to have at least a dozen riders, so be careful.  Also, bicycles yield to walkers and horses; call out when you pass.

Ride time temp 59, high in the 70's.  Looking forward to a great ride.

Attached are the results of tonight's time trial.  We had 13 participants including Stan's effort on Wednesday.  Several suggested we do this every week; I'm thinking more like monthly or so, starting in the spring.  The info below may be hard to read, but you get the gist.  See the attached file for a better format.

Thanks to all for making it worthwhile.

While the guys down in N.O. have been running a lakefront time trial for some time, the speeds seem soft for a flat course.  See the ride report below.  However, I did map our course on RidewithGPS and confirmed what we all knew; it's downhill coming in to the tune of 200 feet loss of elevation.  See the map and profile here:

Chris said the clock is having "issues", but the backup hourglass is working fine.

What a beautiful night last night! The weather was perfect for a new Time
Trial with a slight North wind off the lake. I was a bit nervous before the
start, wondering if anyone would be showing up. I marked the new start line
(in the parking lot) and the new finish line (at the picnic table in front
of Kona Cafe) and hoped some riders would materialize. At 5:30, there were a
bunch of cars in the parking lot with people pulling bikes out the trunk,
but I didn't think any of them were here for the TT. Then I started to
notice some race jerseys and aero helmets. A lot of them. And a few from a
familiar team from Baton Rouge. Well, after Rick Montgomery from GNO/Tri set
up a race clock (yeah, a real race clock), we sent the first of 19 riders
off into the twilight and dope smoke along beautiful Lakeshore Drive.

This course is basically the same as before, but just .9 miles longer
because we moved the start finish about a half mile back. But with it being
infront of Kona, and with a small crowd watching, it is SO much better.
Seeing the riders make the big sweeper in front of Landrys about a half KM
away, heading south toward the finish line, with the shimmering dirt in the
lake as a back drop is pretty cool.

There was an orderly waiting line of riders to get going and most were new
faces for me. And the guys from Baton Rouge brought with them the new course
record holder, Mitch Evans (Canes). Between the top 3 finishers, 2 competed
at 6 -gap on Sunday and one is recovering from a broken hip. After the race,
we all walked about 10 steps into the Kona Cafe for some beer and
sandwitches and a BS session. What a night!

*denotes Retro, no aero equiptment used. I'm only denoting anyone in the top
10 that were retro, although there were many there completely retro.

Next TT will be in 2 weeks (October 13) at the same place, but we'll start
at 6:00 PM. It was getting a little dark when the first riders were coming
in and it looked like everyone was ready to go for 6:00 anyway. Make sure
you come out, at least for the beer and spectating. It's a good time..

Weather is shaping up nice for Thursday, but the sun is dropping faster and faster, so we need to start a little earlier.  I also made an executive decision, with input, on the course which is now 8.25 miles from the Old Trace Exhibit to the end of last long bridge at the start of the Trace; both marked in orange striping.  Here is the plan.

5:15 PM ride from the Armory at warm up pace out to Old Trace Exhibit.  If you cannot leave that early, drive out to the Old Trace Exhibit and we'll get you a ride back afterward.  Park with some sense and consideration of others as space is limited.

6:00 PM first rider off from Old Trace Exhibit.  Start line is on the Trace even with the Old Trace sign; orange stripe on shoulder.  Due to safety concerns, we will allow rolling starts so we are not sitting still on the road.  Subsequent riders will line up in the Old Trace parking area and roll out from there.  Riders will start at 30 second intervals; 1st rider at 0:00, 2nd at 0:30, 3rd at 1:00, etc...

Chris Trippe is the clock master and will drive the clock down to the finish after the last rider has started.  Everybody should be done by 6:45; sunset is 6:50.  Chris will record times which will then be crunched through a spreadsheet for ranking, speed, wattage, and carbon footprint.  Official-unofficial results will be posted that evening.  Since my stoker is otherwise engaged, Mr. Trippe may need some assistance on the time keeping.

This is not intended to be a competition, but just you against the clock to set the bar to measure against next spring.  All are welcome at all levels of ability.  Generally, slower riders will go first to maximize time for Chris to travel from start to finish.  Don't be offended by your start placement.

So far, known participants in no particular order:  Hal Harrington, Kim & Mike Downey, Scott Sandidge, George Marshall, Curtis Moroney, Allen Richard...  Where is everybody else? Do I need to call you out?  I hope to see David, Wayne, Kenneth, Stan, Angela, Tevah, Doug, Gwyneth, T.S., T.G., Ronnie, Scottie,...

A blinkie is advisable.  Remember the Trace is a motorway with a 50 mph speed limit; don't stand around on the road.  No drafting.
