After last night's pre-season game (NAS 4 STL 3), Randy Robitaille
may have the edge over Kris Beech, for the moment. I really don't
think Yanic Perreault will make the team, despite the fact that I
was a booster of the team picking him up. (Of course, that was
before they picked up all those other centers.)

As for the opening day, here's my forward line-up...

Paul Kariya - David Legwand - Scott Hartnell
Martin Erat - Greg Johnson - Steve Sullivan
Scott Hall - Randy Robitaille - Scott Walker
Darcy Hordichuk - Scott Nichol - Jeremy Stevenson

Hartnell, after last season, and based on the way he's been playing
in training camp, deserves to be on at least the second line.
There's been talk of using Johnson more offensively. Well, why not
have him center two scoring threats like Erat and Sullivan. And Hall
and Walker can both score, and can make up for any of Robitaille's
shortcomings. We'd get consistent scoring from three lines.

Anyhoo...

To all Members…

I have one of the limited edition Gibson Les Paul Guitars that they produced for
the predators. I have attached pictures. I brought it with me to Chicago and
am now moving to New York and will not have space for it. Is anyone interested?
I would really like a Predators fan to have it….

I guess I'll have to post on this board to update things a bit.
Nashville has signed four players since the 19th. First we signed
former Predator center Randy Robitaille to a two-way contract on the
19th. Then we signed defenseman T.J. Reynolds to a minor-league
contract on the 25th. And yesterday (the 31st) we signed another former
Predators center - Greg Classen - to a two-way contract, and right-wing
Robert Snowball (great name!) to a minor-league contract.

Eaton re-signs despite lockout assignment

By JOHN GLENNON
Staff Writer

A few months ago, it looked like defenseman Mark Eaton had forgotten
about the Predators.

A few weeks ago, it appeared the Predators had forgotten about him.

But as training camp nears, it appears those troubled times are all
but forgotten.

The 28-year-old Eaton has re-signed with the organization in which
his NHL career has blossomed and is preparing to play a significant
role for the Predators.

His subtle style has also opened the eyes of the U.S. national
program, which made Eaton one of 39 participants in the upcoming
Olympic orientation camp at Colorado Springs, Colo. The bulk of the
2006 U.S. Olympic hockey team will be selected from that pool of
players.

"I'd say things have definitely changed for the better here lately,''
Eaton said. "I'm glad there's been a lot of water under the bridge
and that everyone's been able to move on. I'm happy to be back and
hopefully the team is happy to have me back.''

It was questionable as to whether Eaton would ever get a chance to
utter those words.

His decision to play for the top minor-league affiliate of the
Detroit Red Wings during the NHL lockout so angered David Poile that
the Predators' normally understated general manager questioned
whether Eaton and Nashville would ever again have a relationship.

Poile had hoped Eaton would choose to play for Nashville's American
Hockey League affiliate in Milwaukee, but confusion over how business
was to be done during the lockout led Eaton to rival Grand Rapids
instead.

"There was a lot of miscommunication on the part of both myself and
my agent,'' Eaton said. "I know the Predators were not too happy with
the situation and rightfully so. The thought did cross my mind that I
wouldn't be playing (in Nashville) again.''

As both sides began to learn more about how Eaton's decision has been
reached, anger mellowed in Nashville.

"It was a frustrating and at times grating situation, but once the
lockout ended, I think cooler heads prevailed,'' Predators Coach
Barry Trotz said. "I know what kind of a person Mark is. I just think
he took some advice from a certain party, and that was not good
advice.''

Still, Eaton's future in Nashville appeared in doubt as late as this
month, when the Predators chose not to make him a qualifying offer.
Trotz said the Predators wanted to re-sign Eaton, but preferably at a
lower cost than the qualifying offer.

"It was just about numbers and wanting to stay under our salary
cap,'' he said. "We had to slot guys in certain areas. It was a well
thought-out process, but there was never any thought that Mark wasn't
wanted.''

Sure enough, Eaton spent only a couple of days on the open market
before re-signing with the Predators.

"My agent told me there were some other teams that showed interest,
but when all was said and done, I told him Nashville was the place I
wanted to be,'' Eaton said. "I liked the way (the 2003-04) season
ended and I wanted to be a part of that going forward.''

His signing came not long after Eaton had received good news from USA
Hockey, which made him one of 14 defensemen invited to the pre-
Olympic camp in early September.

Jim Johannson, USA Hockey's director of operations, was one of the
members who selected Eaton over such veteran American talents as
Chris Chelios and Brian Leetch.

He said it's rare to see Eaton make any kind of significant mistake.

"There were plenty of games when you didn't know he was there, and
that's very much a compliment,'' Johannson said. "I won't say he
plays an effortless game, but he's always under control. He's got
good vision, he can skate well and he's just become a much more
stable player in general.''

While Eaton has competed for the U.S. in past World Championships, he
knows representing his country at the Olympics in Italy would be a
far more memorable experience.

"There's no bigger stage than the Olympics,'' Eaton said. "For an
American-born player, I think you'd have to have a hole in your head
not to know about 1980 and the Miracle on Ice. We haven't had gold
since then, so it would be a thrill and an honor to try to get it
back.''

In the meantime, Eaton will try to bolster an NHL career that seems
to be rounding into form.

He set career highs in games played (75), goals (four) and assists
(nine) in 2003-04, while averaging nearly 21 minutes of ice time per
game.

"He may not always get the big goal or make the big play, but the
coaches have confidence in him in every situation,'' Poile
said. "He's steady and he plays the tough minutes against other
teams' top players. I don't know if he's on the radar of teams around
the league, but he sure fits us.'' •

NASHVILLE PREDATORS SIGN GOALTENDER PEKKA RINNE

Nashville, Tenn. (August 23, 2005) - Nashville Predators Executive Vice
President/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has
signed goaltender Pekka Rinne (PECK-ah REEN-eh). In keeping with club
policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Rinne, 22 (11/3/82), captured the Finnish Elite League championship in
each of the past two seasons as a member of Karpat Oulu. The 6-5, 207-
pound Kempele, Finland native attended Nashville prospect conditioning
camps in 2004 and 2005. He appeared in 10 games in 2004-05, registering
a record of 8-1-0 with a 1.68 goals-against average. His professional
development began in the Karpat system, where he played for their
junior team from 2001-2003.

Originally Nashville's 10th choice, 258th overall (eighth round), in
the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Rinne becomes the first member of the
Predators' 2004 Entry Draft class to sign with Nashville.

It would be interesting if a team in our division picked up Mike
Dunham, and he actually got back into starter form in order to play us
numerous times. Predators fans would really be on his back during the
games in Nashville. :-D

The best thing about the Steve Sullivan signing is that it's for FOUR
YEARS! Wow! As for Dan Hamhuis; IMO, he's the second best defenseman on
the team, after Kimmo Timonen. I'm talking about all-around play. He's
very skilled both offensively and defensively.

I saw on ESPN that Sullivan signed (thank GOD!!!). During the brief
time I lived in suburban Chicago, I went to one Blackhawks game and
got to see Sully take a penalty shot (Exciting like crazy, but he
didn't convert...). It's easy to be a fan of Sully, but...

Defenseman Dan Hamhuis also signed. His name isn't as well known -
especially for a new Preds fan like me. What's the book on him? Is
this a "good" move?

I just thought of a great moniker for the line of Darcy Hordichuk,
Scott Nichol and Jordin Tootoo.

"THE GIRLY LINE!"

My reasoning? Well, Darcy and Jordin are unisex names - i.e. they're
girls names. Scott is strictly a boys name (to my knowledge), but
Nichol comes very close to a number of girls names, like Nicole.

Also, this line will be the pest line for the Predators, and girls
often tend to be pests in the eyes of boys.

It would also be somewhat of an ironic name, given that this line is
really scrappy; whereas a line of Lady Bing nominees might be
considered somewhat "girly". (Not that there aren't tough girls out
there. I know a few who could clean my clock.)

It was that dang Yahoo! change-over where they combined their Clubs

of all the posts that had to be relocated. The Club was still here
the whole time though. You just had to get through by a side door.
My link to the Club went directly to the messages, bypassing the

Welcome new Pred fan.
I have not posted in a LONG time, but I can not express how excited I
am that Nashville finally picked up a recognised name player. I
travel the country for work and wear my Preds hat a bunch and get
asked all the time what league they are in. That pisses me off. I
try to name players that the everyday sports fan will recognise, and
they just look at with a blank face. I was always afraid of a big
name player in Nashville breaking the young team moral, but I do not
think Karia is going to bring any ego into the locker room. That is
my biggest fear of a big name player with the Preds.
Can't wait until the puck drops.

The Predators almost always play great against the Red Wings, and a
lot of Detroit fans come to Preds/Wings games in Nashville. So
there's a definite rivalry there.

For some reason, the Predators have always had trouble against the
Blackhawks, so there's a bit of a rivalry there. Seeing how Chicago
may be a much better team this coming season, here's hoping the
Preds can start showing up in games against the Hawks.

There's some heat between Calgary and Nashville. We had one big
brawl with the Flames. So there's another definite rivalry, IMO.

I never really felt there was much of a rivalry between Nashville
and Columbus or Saint Louis. But the Blue Jackets are looking
dangerous now, so if both Columbus and Nashville come out strong
this coming season, there's a strong chance a good rivalry with
develop there, with both teams jockeying for the top spot in the
division.

And, in my eyes, there's a rivalry between the Predators and
Colorado, since I absolutely DESPISE the Avalanche. I'm still a
Nordiques fan at heart, and while the people of Colorado may have
deserved an NHL team, they didn't deserve Quebec City's team, or the
Stanley Cup. >:-[ Yes, I'm still very bitter.

formidable team than (Gasp!) the Wing-Dingers. Have the Preds formed
some intense rivalries in their (8 year?) existence? I grew up in
Colorado, so naturally I have tried to watch every Avs-Wings game I
could.

How many people think that Kariya's %$#^@? year with the Avs was just
a fluke? He didn't seem to be injury prone until he went to the Mile
High city. And yes, I did see his Stanley Cup Stevens hit/goal score
game. Hope he's healthy...

I'm such a maroon! I forgot a key Predator - Scott Hartnell. Forget
Denis Arkhipov - he'll be gone. The lines might look like this...

Kariya - Legwand - Walker
Erat - Sullivan - Hartnell
Stevenson - Johnson - Hall
Hordichuk - Nichol - Tootoo

David Legwand and Steve Sullivan would be interchangable as first and
second line centers.

Anyhoo...

Lots of teams will loathe playing against that last line. :-) I'd still
like to see Nashville pick up another center though, and somehow find a
team to take Denis Arkhipov off our hands. Though he's pretty old, I
wouldn't mind the Predators signing Vincent Damphousse. He's pretty
fast and agile, and would add some veteran influence to the team. He'd
definitely be better than Arkhipov at least.

We signed free-agent center Scott Nichol. In 2003/2004 with Chicago he
scored 7 goals and 11 assists in 75 games with 145 PIM. In 2004/2005 he
played for the London Racers (10/1-7-8/70) in the UK's EIHL (Elite Ice
Hockey League). He's 5'8" and 173 lbs.

I have been gone for a while but I am back! Just heard about Kariya.
Its getting really interesting!

All Detroit has are several over the hill players and another who is
still a SISSY!

Gotta go!

Joe
