I figured Goodenow was gone as soon as they accepted the salary cap.
The players' position was doomed from the start, but they were good
union members and lined up behind their leadership. So when he cost
them an entire year's pay and a lousier deal than they could have
inked last fall, they were understandably hacked.
I can't hold any animosity toward Bettman, though. The Nashville
Predators couldn't have hired a better advocate. There was a huge
segment of the hockey world (including some big powerful teams)
advocating league contraction, and Nashville would have been one of
the first 2 or 3 teams to go. But Bettman held the line and insisted
on a deal guaranteeing 30 healthy franchises, and I think that is
what he got. -NF
