History
Miroslav Durak is yet another European prospect whom the Predators
have lured to North America, to get a head start on adapting to the
North American game. He was selected in the eighth round, 220th
overall in the 1999 NHL draft after his first season with Bratislava
in the Slovakian junior league. After participating in the 1999
Predators rookie camp, Durak was assigned to Des Moines of the USHL,
where he turned in a solid first season.
Talent Analysis
Durak is a hard-working defenseman with good all-around skills and
size. There is no particular weak point in his game, but he is not
dominant in any particular area either. Durak skates well, can hit
and has a hard shot from the point, along with an effective snap
shot.
Future
As is the case with all would-be sleepers, Durak faces a long road
to the NHL. He had a successful first season in the USHL and the
Predators hope he can repeat the success of St. Louis Blues prospect
Petr Smrek, who made the huge jump from the USHL to the AHL without
missing a beat. However, Durak is younger than Smrek and must play
one more year of junior hockey before he can enter the pro ranks. He
is a long shot to ever make the NHL, but coming to North America so
soon was a step in the right direction.
