We have plenty of defensemen to fill the roster without Karalahti
(although his toughness will be missed). With Karalahti, we had six
regular blueliners - Karalahti, Delmore, Houlder, Hulse, Skrastins
and Timonen. If the team keeps an extra seventh man on the roster, we
could use Berenzweig, Eaton, Trepanier or possibly Boikov or Hamhuis.
With Karalahti gone, Trepanier's NHL experience gives him the inside
track on a permanent position with the team. I think both Berenzweig
and Eaton deserve a regular spot in the NHL. IMO, Berenzweig has the
potential be a top-four blueliner and Eaton, while not particularly
amazing in any capacity, is solid and more consistent than many
others in the league.
Personally, I think Trepanier was acquired as a backup plan if
Delmore went to arbitration and the outcome was not in the team's
favor. That said, if he wasn't around, I'd have Berenzweig take
Karalahti's spot on the blueline, with Eaton standing in as seventh.
Without considering the possibility of Hamhuis making the team, that
is.
Anyhoo...
