Russian player Alexander Krevsun dies during 10-kilometre run
TOGLIATTI, Russia (CP) -- Alexander Krevsun, 22, a former NHL
prospect with the Nashville Predators playing in Russia's second-tier
hockey league, has died after collapsing during a 10-kilometre cross-
country run.
He leaves behind a wife and a young daughter.
Krevsun passed a physical July 1 and he appeared to be in perfect
condition, his club team CSK Samara indicated.
With five kilometres still to run, Krevsun, at the time part of the
leading group, collapsed. He was taken to hospital where he died of a
brain hemorrhage two hours later.
The case resembles a similar incident last year when Vyacheslav
Bezukladnikov of Lada Togliatti died following a collapse after a
cross-country run during his club's training camp in Bulgaria.
In both situations, the runs took place under scorching sun in
temperatures above 25 degrees.
Krevsun was selected 124th overall in the 1999 NHL entry draft, and
he represented Kazakhstan at the 2000 world junior tournament. He
signed a pro contract with Nashville on July 13, 2000, but was
released last Sept. 16 during training camp.
Krevsun had eight goals and 13 assists in 48 games with the ECHL's
New Orleans Brass in 2000-2001.
