Just wanted to follow up on the NCC that I mentioned briefly at the
team training. Is anyone already organizing this with our club?
Someone mentioned that Tim L might be. The reason Im checking so soon,
is because registration closes for the 1st session on Nov. 27th, with
it beginning Dec 1st. The first session focuses on swimming and the
benchmark is 100 miles, I believe. All of the information is on the
USAT website under the club section.
If someone is already organizing this that is awesome, if not, I can
get on it. If I dont hear anything by late on the 26th, I will go
ahead and register with USAT for our club.
I think this will be great motivation for those cold mornings with the
steam coming off the pool! :)
Thanks, Megan L

As the triathlon season is wrapping up this month I was thinking
about what I could write about that would help NATS succeed next
triathlon season or in the future. So, the coaching tip for
November has more to do with keeping a balanced lifestyle than with
any specific triathlon skills. As always, let me know if you have
any questions and I'll try to incorporate the answers into the
monthly tip.
November's tip.
Tell and show the people you love and care about how much you
appreciated their help, encouragement, and support throughout the
past triathlon season. No amount of success can be achieved alone.
The time it takes to participate in this sport is tremendous. As
triathletes, we sometimes get wrapped up in the yards or miles and
we forget that others are making it possible for us to train and
race. That someone special is probably cooking healthy meals,
picking up the kids, making travel arrangements, and generally
making it possible for us to be our best. Without the support of
those special people this lifestyle would be impossible. So with
that said, make a special effort during the next few weeks to thank
those special people in your life. I hope these tips help during
your off season. Good luck with your training and racing.

Welcome to Naples Russell,

If you're looking for an early morning workout, there is a Masters swim program that meets at 5:30 am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Norris Pool (on Livingston Road, just North of Pine Ridge, on the campus of the Community School).  We have a great coach it is always well attended.  You can also meet some of the Naples Area Triathletes (myself included).  If it fits into your schedule plan to drop by on Monday.  Contact me if you have any questions.

Also, there is a running group, the Gulf Coast Runners, that is having a potluck on Thursday, November 2nd.  That would also be a great place for you to meet some of the area's runners and triathletes.  I will be there as well.  Let me know if you would like details, or we'll talk at the pool.

Hello All !
I've just moved to Naples from balmy Connecticut and I'm looking for a
tri-group (preferably knuckleheads) and some info regarding where to
bike and swim in the area. I'm doing Placid again for the 2nd time and
have no information about the area. I'm a 4am riser and like to get my
bike and swim done early. I'm excited about being here and hope to
meet you all at some point..... any info that you can pass along would
be great !

Welcome to sunny Southwest Florida!
Let me introduce myself, I'm Ben Crotteau a local rookie triathlete.
Our area is full of great areas to train, just depends on where you
start out from. Down here there is very little need to travel to far
to train. Let me know where you want to start from and maybe I can
help. Also if you tell me how far you want to bike & run that will
help.
Every third sat. of the month our club does a Olympic distance
training exercise. This month we had about 20 - 30 people. Not a bad
turnout considering it was only the second time we have done it.
Good Luck!

So, just in case anyone us worried about us...or  "I don't know where I'm gonna go when the volcano blows."

The earthquake hit as we were drinking morning coffee. our 5th Floor condo  shook like crazy. The walls flexed back and forth and almost everything went off shelves and onto the floor. Glasses came flying out of the cupboards and shattered on the floor.  The refrigerator walked  across the kitchen. Joe says he wasn't scared, but I thought the building might collapse.

Almost immediately we could hear someone shouting for us to get out.  Joe and I grabbed some essentials and waited by the stairway. Two very nice big Hawaiian boys helped Joe carry my electric chair down 5 flights of stairs and I scooted down on my butt.

We gathered on the street for more instructions. They told us there was a major crack between the two buidings.  It was a good chance we would not be able to get back in.  Joe snuck back up and packed most of our belongings and put them in the car.

The power was off everywhere. We walked into town and Joe swam. I watched as the Holland America cruise ship officers looked for their passengers. They wanted out of there!   I listened to a battery radio someone had on the street.  Lots of lands sides and sink holes on the highway.

We hung around the Pier (that's where the practice swims are held) and chatted with other triathletes. We heard stories about people in the water for the quake, out running and on their bikes.   Everyone's stories were interesting.

We finally got hungry and went looking for food when the power came back on. Every place open seemed  to have sets of stairs. We finally drove around and found some places open.

When we got back to the condo  the manager was just powering up the elevators. We were ok to go in, the cracks were superficial.  No water or phone, but we did have power.

Joe biked about 20 miles out on the race course and saw only boulders on the shoulders.

Amazingly the TV worked. It had fallen off it's stand and on its face on the  floor. Watched  local TV coverage and saw lots of minor damage.  Still no phones, but we  were able to use the cell for a couple quick calls. No internet  NO HOT WATER for some reason and I am dying for a shower!

The phone went off again, so I don't know when I will get this out, but we are okay with only minor inconveniences.

We will check this off of our natural disaster list. Blizzards, Hurricanes, Tornados, wild fires and  earthquakes! And we are still here!

This year's Escape to Miami was well organized and one of the best
races I have done. I understand that last year's race, the inaugural
race, was not as well organized. But the race organizers did a great
job in changing the event to October and improving the course this
year...especially the swim course. The swim course was shortened
to .7 mile swim from the island to Miami. I really enjoyed the boat
ride to Escape Island, where we had to "jump ship" and swim to the
island before the start.

We had a number of members from Naples participating in the race,
from our top finisher Tom Kahl, to Joe Buckheit, Kevin Erndl, Tom
Hornyak, Mitch Norgart, Erica Szilagyi-Norgart, Brad Galbraith, and
myself. If there were any other members from Naples, please post
your information on this site.

You'll also find that I have posted some of the results and the
course on this site.

It was great seeing everyone in Miami for this race.

A Big Thanks to Kevin Erndl for coordinating our members for dinner
at the Nexxt Cafe in Miami Beach on Saturday night.

We look forward to seeing you at this Saturday's (Oct 21st) tri
training event at Lowdermilk Park!

The Naples Area Triathletes are now an official USA Triathlon club.  This means the club will be able to participate in many of the exciting programs offered through USAT and USAT Florida.  In addition we can feel good about supporting the national governing body of our sport.  Please visit the USAT website at usatriathlon.org and the USAT Florida website at usat-florida.com to view the available programs.  Let your board of directors know what programs you want the Naples Area Triathletes to participate in.

Attention All Members:

You can immediately support USAT and the Naples Area Triathletes by renewing or signing up for an annual adult bronze membership.  USAT will donate $2.00 to the Naples Area Triathletes for every club member that signs up for a USAT annual membership for the first time.  Additionally, USAT will donate $1.00 for all club members that renew their USAT membership.  When you renew, your membership is extended 12 months from your current expiration date.  Only memberships purchased through Active.com, the USAT official online registration provider will be eligible for this donation.  So visit https://www.active.com/register/index.cfm?event_id=1356736&customreg=blank today and help USAT and the Naples Area Triathletes.

Hi,
In an effort to help our members I'm going to start a monthly
coaching tip post. These tips will come from my experiences,
failures, and successes (a very few) in nearly 25 years of triathlon
training and racing. If you have any comments please e-mail Wayne.
He is in charge of the complaint department. Seriously, let me know
if you have any questions and I'll try to incorporate the answers
into the monthly tip. So, here we go!
October's tip.
The day before a big race swim the race course or part of the race
course at the same time as your swim start. This is a good time to
check out the possible winds, tides, currents, water depths,
lighting conditions, and to prepare your race strategy. First,
determine buoy placement and the best line toward the first buoy.
Swimming a tight angle around a buoy will slow most of us down.
Remember that you will be starting in a wave with possibly hundreds
of other swimmers, so let your swimming abilities guide you in your
plan. When you enter the water check the depth. Decide if and how
far you can dolphin dive during your start. I have found that I can
go farther, faster when I dolphin dive. This usually helps me get
to the first buoy with the wave leaders. If you don't know what a
dolphin dive is Kevin or I will show you at the next training
session on October 21 at Lowdermilk Park. During your practice
swim look for landmarks that will help keep your swim straight and
guide you into the swim finish and the transition. Tall buildings
or balloons at the transition work especially well for landmarks.
Do not depend on the buoys to guide you; they will be difficult to
spot on race day. Do not swim at race pace, but do incorporate a
few pick-ups at race pace or faster. Decide what color goggle lens
will be best for the conditions. As you approach the swim finish
and the water depth decreases decide how far you are comfortable
swimming. Some people like to stand and run as soon as possible.
This is not effective. Instead incorporate dolphin diving or swim
until the water depth is only a few inches deep. Finally, exit the
swim finish and jog the transition area to where your bike will be
racked. Look for landmarks to help you determine where your bike
will be racked. I've found that I can remember a landmark better
than a number or counting the number of bike rack rows. I hope
these pre-race tips help during your fall racing season. Good luck
with your training and racing.
