Subject: Bike ride to Craig Schultz's funeral services

Craig Schultz was a member of the Quad Cities Bicycle Club, and as other
e-mails have stated, he just started to get into a faster style of riding
and competing. Craig and I had several conversations about how to train and
fundamentals to work on. I do know at this time he was training for the
Iowa State Time Trial Championships in Nichols, IA coming up next weekend.
He was a great guy and truly loved to ride his bicycle.

Earlier today, I received a call from Cordova Police Chief Rich Whalen
wondering whether he was one of the participants in the Cordova 40K TT...and
he was. He told me that Craig was riding where he was suppose to and was
just past the turn onto Meredosia Road, as part of the 40K course. He said
that the evidence shows that Craig was struck and then dragged by the
vehicle. The first person on the scene called 911 and Craig was still alive
at that time. Once the Chief got to the scene he had passed. They think
that Craig was there a half an hour before anyone showed on the scene. If
the driver of the car had stopped and called for help, there would be a
strong chance Craig could be alive and in the hospital recovering. Which at
this point the Chief wanted me to remind everyone to always wear your helmet
and to watch traffic out there before turning as the cars drive above the
posted speed limit on tha6t stretch of road. He also wanted me to remind of
the 3 foot passing law as well, since the motorists obviously had not paid
attention to this new law either.

I've talked with Craig's sister Rea Schultz and she would like us to ride
our bikes in the funeral procession. I would like everyone to meet at the
Kimberley road Hy-Vee at 9am and ride to the church from there. Services:
are Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 10 AM at Christ's Family Church,
4601 Utica Ridge Road, Davenport and we will ride to the cemetery, which is
Davenport Memorial Park. Please ride however you normally ride (bike,
clothing, etc) but please wear a helmet if you have one. This will be a
Memorial Ride as well, so it will be at a slow pace in order to keep
everyone together. We will ride east on Kimberley road to Utica Ridge Road,
then north to the church. We will ride on the four-lane road and observe
the full use of the right hand lane. Please obey all traffic signs and
signals. Please tell everyone you know about this ride.

Sincerely,

Donnie Miller

By BARB ICKES, Courier Lee News Service
DAVENPORT --- Craig C. Schultz, 61, of Davenport, has been identified
by the Illinois State Police as the victim in Thursday's hit-and-run
accident in rural Cordova, Ill.

Schultz was an emergency room doctor who worked at Medical Associates
Clinic in Dubuque, commuting to and from Davenport to be near his
14-year-old daughter, Rock Island County Chief Deputy Coroner Brian
Gustafson said Friday.

Schultz was riding his bicycle around 10:39 a.m. Thursday when he was
struck by a vehicle near the intersection of 150th Avenue North and
291st Street North. He was wearing a helmet but suffered massive head
injuries and died at the scene.

Agustin Barragan, 55, of Savanna, Ill., was arrested on suspicion of
leaving the scene of a fatal accident and was being held in the Rock
Island County Jail. The crash remains under investigation by the
Illinois State Police.

"He was a passionate man," Gustafson said. "He was passionate about
being a father to his daughter, passionate about his work and
passionate about cycling and skiing."

He said that Schultz was in the physical condition of someone 20 years
younger than he was.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

We have helped organize funeral processions before. The first step is
to contact the funeral home and see if the family would want the
addition to the funeral. Some families may have reservations. After,
put the call out to cyclists who can participate.

My brother and sister-in-law were killed while riding their tandem in
Canada in 2003. For their memorial service in Seattle, all of their
tandem buddies rode over together. Their arrival at the service was
very beautiful, meaningful, and, of course, painful. For those of us
in the family, it was such a wonderful sign of the support of their
fellow riders.
