The Balerno resident is suffering from a cold and
hasn't been near a mountain bike for a couple of

Would have been up for this, but:

1: Have no lights charged.
2: Bikes in bits. Get forks back today.
3: I'm on the sauce tonight. :)

Chris, thats good though still no-one at my spped though! We could
do the route from Harlaw to Bonaly via Cubbiedean, up Puke hill,
down Phantoms and then over Maidens or the usual route the other way.

No sign of Dave (original) he does have lights? Surely he doesnt
depend on Alan for his fitness?? Joe has been unusually quiet as has
the Balerno resident....

mmmmm....I think I'll just try fiddling with different settings.

What, no write-up from Mark or Will? We all want to know how it went!
Or are you both in too much pain to tell us? ;-)

I've heard mention that a good way to get rebound damping set is to
lay a ladder on the ground and ride along it. Have the rebound
damping set as slow as possible without the fork "packing down" over
the bumps - ie. the rebound is so slow that it doesn't have time to
come back up before the next hit and the fork eventually reaches the
bottom of it's travel.

This is assuming that you want to set up the fork to react to quick
short hits. I guess dirt-jumpers would want a very slow rebound.

My fork, a 2003 Marzocchi Z1 FR SL has the older ECC5 adjustment.
This is 5 speeds to rebound daming that can be set up on-the-fly. The
slowest is effectively the same as 'ETA' and locks the fork down. The
other 4 settings do make noticable differences to the rebound. I
usually keep it on a fast-ish rebound, but make it a bit slower when
going slowly down more rocky things (like the stone chute on GT
Black) or smooth stuff (like the new Spooky Wood).

If I'm going over bumpy stuff quite quickly, like braking bumps, I
really do notice the difference if I have the rebound slower. It
feels like my old MXC forks.

What SPV does, from a recent BikeMagic article about an SPV shock:

"The idea is that as well as the usual piston, there's a second
floating piston at one end of the shock (sometimes in a remote
reservoir) with an air chamber behind it. There's a valve in the main
piston, and as the shock compresses the build up of pressure in the
damping oil (which occurs because of the main piston pushing on it)
tries to open the valve. If there's not much pressure in the air
chamber, the valve opens easily, lets loads of oil through and the
shock compresses unimpeded. If there's lots of pressure in the air
chamber, the valve can't open and the shock won't compress. This has
some very useful effects. First, you can easily tune the shock to
remain unmoved by low-amplitude forces that result from pedalling but
react to the more sizable ones from hitting bumps, and you can choose
where the threshold between not moving and moving is. Second, because
the shock will only compress until the pressure on either side of the
piston is equal, it'll only compress as far as it needs to to absorb a
bump. Traditional shocks tend to over-travel, leaving the rebound
damping circuit to bring things back under control. Platform shocks
don't work the rebound damping as hard and the bike feels more stable.
The Curnutt design is found in Progressive 5th Element and Manitou SPV
   shocks."

So less SPV pressure for more small bump response and more SPV
pressure for less fork bobbing. Apparently the main difference between
last year's SPV and this year's SPV Evolve is that now a small hole
has been drilled through the valving so a small amount of oil flow is
always present so there's less of an on/off feeling to the SPV action.
Or something. It's late, I'm tired and I'm trying to remember what an
LBS guy told me a fortnight ago.

   Chris
