Hello MOWIND members,

Now that the water is just about done being frozen over it is time to get ready for the
next year of windsurfing.

The purpose of this discussion is to determine what is important to MOWIND for the next year.

In a few weeks - Let's say on or around March 14th on a Sunday evening at 8:00 PM CST, for any interested members we will have a conference call and decide on the items to discuss for 2010.

Feel free to suggest a better date and time is this is totally bad for someone who has an important discusion or announcement.

Important topics or updates that come to mind are:

Race and Event Insurance - Craigh Berg
Classes and Fleets - Any Chnages for 2010?
Scoring - Arden Anderson
Web Page - Scott Hass
Officers and Committees - Each Report Out
Scheduling - Arnie Cleveland
Canadian Nationals - Woody
Fundraising - Kevin  Gratton
Feel free to comment or introduce you own topic if you think it is important by sending the group an email.

I have also invited several local groups to join the call and hope you might consider putting on an event this summer. Please join us! Here is our Website www.mowind.org

I have used the service from www.freeconference.com  If someone has access to a "free" 800 number call in service that we can utilize, please speak up. If not in the next week once I get some feedback on dates, and other services, I will send out the final meeting announcement.

I look forward to the email discussion that usually precedes this call. Please keep the list intact and add in folks I may have missed or do not have an email for (The Grosse Point Gang)

Hi Phil & fellow MoWinders,

Thank you for taking the time to call a meeting!

Sunday the 14th @ 8pm works for me.  Earlier say 7 pm works also.

I would like to see MoWind (us) work on getting insurance so we could teach during our events,  We also need to get the kids involved more.

Nick Hayes (Milw. WI.) authored a new book called Saving Sailing and I have been fortunate to meet him at one of his presentations.  Involving the whole family is one of the most important ingredients to success.

Talk to all at the meeting.

Thanks,

Can someone direct me to this years event schedule?
I have heard that The Hazards around middle Bass Island is on? I never missed one year. The best year was when we lucked out with S.West at 20+ knots and waves on the western shore loop!
And is Alum creek on again?

I'll take this opportunity to moan and wail about our loss of the
Toledo Regatta this year.
To all of the Toledo area workers who provided a great event in the
past, THANK YOU!
I'm looking forward to a future with a restored Toledo Regatta.

To all the Midwest Speed Quest racers I must announce I already won
the race to be "1st".
I won't get any prizes, honors, or accolades when the season is over
because I'm likely
to be beaten by most. But I do get to claim, I am and always will be
the first racer to be
1st in the 2010 season. I'm the only one who competed on opening day.
   Who will be next?

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at the Walleye Wagatta May

Shawn,

Wow,

This all sounds great!. Golf, All nite softball, running 5K and 10K, camping on the water, Jammin on the Rez! Saturday Night Concert and of course Windsurfing.

Something for everyone.

I am working on the event notice and should have that completed this week. I'll add as much information as possible. If you have a flyer on the camping costs, I can use that information.
I want to inform everyone as much as possible.

FYI - Here is a link to the 2010 MOWIND Calendar.

Philip
I just had a meeting with the campers organization at the reservoir and they are going to have a "Jammin at the Rez concert on Saturday July 17th. I am talking with a local engraver for awards and another local business for t-shirts. How many awards need to be made and do they need to specify certain classes or anything? There is a golf course a 1/4 of a mile from the reservoir entrance for anyone who would like to golf. We have another park up town for camping as well, they will be having an all-night softball tournament that weekend. I am also thinking of having a 5k-10k running event that weekend around the top of the reservoir.
Let me know what all I need to do to make this a successful event for everyone.
Thanks

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Over the last week MOWIND met via teleconference and we added the event to this years schedule as a points event.

Points means racing in the event garners points for the year end standings which are tabulated across many events and htis should pull in a few more distant attedee's

I expect the first year will be well attended, but as the event is unknown, only God can predict for sure how many sailors will come.

Realistically somewhere between 20 and 50 racers is where I would say this will be for the first year.

We put up some basic information on our website, which you can find here:

feel free to share - at the moment it is primitive, but it is there.

We will likely look to post up smething to the US Windsurfing site, but at the moment it is under construction.

I would like to improve the website content.

Items I would like to link on the MOWIND site to are any links to the camping venue, parks, and the village itself for information.
Local places of interest we can consider adding.

The MOWIND website runs on Word Press so some things don't upload as you would like, but we will work with anything you can provide.

As you develop the schedule for the summer's activities at the camp ground, it would be good to alert everyone when we will be there and to know they are welcome to join us.

If there will be activities like a Saturday Night pot luck dinner with the entire camp and a live Band, those would be good to know so we can advertize them on our web site and in the flyer.

My goal is to make this a fun safe event for everyone.

We will need a small staff of volunteers to help with registration and perhaps the village can help us recruit some folks who would like to join us to help with that, and perhaps some of the racing starts and scoring. Use of a small boat with electric motor to set the bouy's for racing and race starting would be most helpful. So if those are items you can assist with, that would be great!

I will need to post up camping reservations and discuss how to handle the fees for park enterance for competitors and friends so we can develop a flyer for the event and make it available for download.

Any information about the beach, campground, etc is useful.

Please consider if there are any discounts for racers for camping fees, and wheter or not the group can camp in the grass together.
Some racers prefer to not camp, so if you can help to identify local hotels, that is helpful.

I have got the base insurance fee sent to me for the moment, I think it is $80 for the event and if we add named entities it adds an additional $50 per name. We should discuss how best to handle event particulars.

Most similar events charge an entry fee to cover some of the costs of the events (between $25 and $75 dependent upon the event).

Typically a T-shirt is provided to those who register, and to the volunteers, along with awards and lunch Saturday and Sunday.

The best awards over the years are the ones that are hand crafted by a local artist. I am not saying this is a requirement, but if there was someone locally that might consider making the awards, the artistic talent is often very appreciated.

Saturday evening is usually a time for something. Other events have gathered at a local resturant for dinner, or gone to Band Jam, or Art shows, etc. So let me know what you know of, a pot luck dinner at the camp with the entire group would be well accepted by those coming. Something else or a local resturant recommendation is also a valid option.

Local publicity is helpful. If there are small newspapers that service New London, we can look to promte it through a small article or something like that.

Finally, some events raffle off donated items. Perhaps this would make sense.

Thanks

Can someone direct me to this years event schedule?

I have heard that The Hazards around middle Bass Island is on? I never missed one year. The best year was when we lucked out with S.West at 20+ knots and waves on the western shore loop!

And is Alum creek on again?

Del,

I too moan the loss of Toledo. It was a great event - International event.

20 years is a long time to put it all together and I thank those who made that sacrifice each year.

We got to enjoy a well run event, and we will miss it.

While pretty much nothing can replace Toledo, we do have 2 new events in Ohio this summer AND the longest running regatta bar none we know of at Alum Creek in a few weeks.

Come out to the Islands or inland to New London this summer and travel to Mid Ohio COW territory for a great event in a few weeks!

I'll put up the New London NOR sometime later next week once all the "extra" activities are better sorted out.

Hi Rod!

Sorry to hear this year we will not be in Toledo. Wish there was a way to change that but I understand what 20 years of service might be like as I start to ramp up the team for New London.

Please extend my thanks on behalf of all of MOWIND and forward my email to your team as a small token of MOWINDS appreciation for all of their hard work and efforts putting on one fine regatta and 20 years of wonderful memories.

The event has always been so professionally run and a pleasure to race, even in some challenging conditions.

For many years it was one of a handful of international events we could attend.

It will be missed.

It is my small hope there is still a nucleus in Toledo that might consider again. Please ask them to reach out.

I hope to see you and yours at one of the surrounding events this summer.

Warmest Regards and Again a very hardy THANK YOU!

Kevin,

Thanks!

It would be most cool to make this event for me. even if can just sail and hang out.

I have so much in flux right now with work, so many agenda items and dates flying around.

I made a reservation today that looks something like this (at the moment)

My tentative trip leaving  Cleveland to Milwaukee then get to the event somehow then leave for  LAX, Sydney, Melbourne, Manilla, Singapore, Beijing thru Korea, Dalian China then home JIT for Jasons graduation and our combined birthday - his 18 - mine OMG 50! Then Grosse Point, etc etc etc.

I'll hopefully find some time to sail in Dalian - very very constant wind. Hidden secret I think.

This trip is built on a house of cards, a strong gust and it could all fall apart.

If I wanted to take some gear sans board, what kinda gear bags do they allow on air travel - Anyone know?

I would love to sail a windsurfer if that is possible for a few minutes at the event.

What a nice addition to your event!

I remember the whole family some from the days ago. Of course Matt was more my age and he was fun to race against at Grand Haven in like 1983?

PS - I sitll have 2 original boards myself.

Since we don't have the TABA race that weekend we hope a few MIGS, BONCS or COWS
will make it. This will be racing on Maumee Bay.

Arden, I would love to sail a windsurfer if that is possible for a few minutes at the event. What a nice addition to your event! I remember the whole family some from the days ago. Of course Matt was more my age and he was fun to race against at Grand Haven in like 1983? PS - I sitll have 2 original boards myself. :) See you Friday evening! He really liked it and sailed it real well.  He did awesome racing, especially Sunday when the wind picked up.  My Brother Andy and myself sailed our old Waylers.  I struggled when the wind picked up.  The old starfish stance, pulling as hard as I can with the back hand and pushing with the front.  Then I see my buds planning on their 11.0’s the rig, rock steady in their hands.  Thank all the sail designers for making windsurfing in higher winds more fun.

It was fun to sail the vintage equipment, more fun in lighter winds though.
