Woody,

Lots and lots of wind followed by large shifts and 1/2 the wind, followed again by a large shift and a load of wind. Repeated like that all day. I am still recovering....I'll try to post something this weekend.

Lots of carnage around the course - I even managed to hit a committee boat while traveling full speed towards a finish. My fault entirely. Too focused on the finish and not enough on my surroundings.

A big round of applause should go out to the Race Committe and all of the event organizers on this one. A lesser crew would probably not have been able to run more than 1 or 2 races on Saturday, and we were treated to 3 course races and another 3 slalom races, all with a speed event going on at the same time. Excellent job- they did a better job handling the conditions than most of the racers did, which is rarely the case.

Later,
Arden

So what happened? How about a play-by-play Arden. Looking at the
results from Race 4 it looks like only 6 started the race. What the
heck happened there? Too windy?

Stories for us who couldn't make the regatta please!!

Just in case anyone is interested, I have a One Design Sail (7.4) with
mast and extension. I inherited this when I bought my EquipeII from
Georg Konapka. It has one small tear that was covered with tape.
Otherwise it is in fine condition. If you would like some or all of
this rig send me an email. I will also be bringing it with me to
Worthington along with another sail I am trying to sell. If nobody
wants it then I will list it on eBay later this year.

Hey everybody,

I know our regatta is coinciding with Steve's Regatta again this
year and I do apologize. Not next year gauranteed cause I wanna
attend Steve's regatta!

Here is our release:

Time to dust off your sails and boards because it's only 4 weeks
until the 4th Annual Moose Regatta! The Northwest Ontario
Windsurfing Club (N.O.W.) along with Fleet8 welcome you to Dryden,
Ontario Canada. Our "Wilderness City" is located in beautiful Sunset
Country in the heart of Canada.

The Moose Regatta is a fun filled event with focus on our entry
level sailors, but still challenging enough for those who want to
test their skills against some of the best sailors in the Midwest
USA and Central Canada. Along with course racing, this years regatta
will include a race around Picnic Island. Fun is what we're all
about, and we encourage our kiter friends to also attend this event.
There is a beautiful sand beach 200m from the event site for kiter's
to launch from. "Flat Rock Beach" is good in almost all wind
directions.

The 2007 Moose Regatta will be held at Sandy Beach Park on Wabigoon
Lake. Sandy Beach will be the ideal location for beginners and
spectators. With an overlooking view of the lake, grassy rigging
area, large sand beach, children's play center, huge outdoor BBQ
shelter, walking trails and a 9 hole golf course 100m from the event
site, there will be something for the whole family to do. So make
plans for this June 29 – July 1, 2007 to attend the largest
Windsurfing Regatta in central Canada!

Along with being a MOWIND point scored event, the 2007 Moose Regatta
will also be The Western Ontario Championships as sanctioned by
Windsurfing Canada.

For full event info visit: www.windsurfwoody.ca/regatta

Hope you can make it!

Woody

Steve,

I am looking forward to your regatta- it is always a good time. I
like your idea for the "Premier" IMCO class, so I am planning to
dust my IMCO off and race it there. I'll register under unlimited to
keep the mowind scoring simple, but will race the imco for the event.

This weekend was the Walleye Wagatta at Windpower in Fond du Lac, WI.
Conditions were excellent for racing on Saturday with 15-20 mph winds
and a great "M" course set by Dave Gratton and RC provided by Dave,
Kevin, and Jeff H. We got off 3 course races in the morning with
steady winds and then took a break for lunch and to setup a downwind
slalom course.

After lunch, we went out in ~20 mph winds for a downwind slalom race
and were able to fly through the course. A second race was started
but later abandoned due to 25+ mph gusts and hard rain coming down
about the time we rounded the first mark. It was a challenge just to
get turned around and head back to shore. Fortunately the high winds
subsided after 5-10 minutes so everyone could get back in.

Sunday we had variable shifty winds ~3-10 mph. We again raced an "M"
course, but with only 3 jibes instead of 5 as we did on Sat. We did 2
races with 2 laps and then switched to only 1 lap for a 3rd race due
to diminishing winds. After completing that race, we did a 4th race
and called it a day.

Scoring was done quickly with help from Jack and others and the
awards were started within probably 60-90 minutes of the last race.
We think that some of the changes we discussed and implemented this
weekend will help streamline our events and lay down some "best
practice" guidelines so that we have consistent events that make good
use of the available wind and the time we have together. We will
probably write some of these items up and post them to this group in
the coming weeks.

For now I am posting the scores from the Walleye Wagatta to the Files
section. Congratulations to all of the participants, and a big Thank
You to everyone that helped make the regatta happen.

Next up are the Toldeo (OH) Windsurfing Championships June 2-3 and
the Worthington (MN) Windsurfing Regatta & Unvarnished Music Festival
June 8-10. Both events are part of the US Windsurfing National Race
Tour.

Also, check out the Midwest Speed Quest. Winds are forecast for 30+
in Worthington the next several days. I won't be able to get there,
but we are also expecting 30 mph winds on Lake Winnebago tomorrow, so
I will be out there.

Lastly, if you know of anyone in the windsurfing community that
hasn't used this group yet, let them know about it. MOWIND feels that
this will be the best way for us to communicate throughout the year
and it will be the best way (other than old-fashioned word of mouth)
to find out about upcoming events, group trips, local conditions,
advice, socializing, and more.

Later,
Arden

For anyone that hasn't seen the calendar yet, this weekend is the Walleye Wagatta at Windpower in Fond du Lac, WI. We have had great weather on Lake Winnebago recently and water temperatures are getting moderate, so a wetsuit is probably a good choice while a drysuit may be too much.

We will start registration 9:00 on Saturday and will shoot for a first start at 11:00.

Congratulations to Uffe, Larry & their support team on a GREAT
regatta. The location was wonderful, arrangements and plans
exceptional, and the wind was almost too much... ;)

Since Arden wasn't there for us to chase, I'll provide the blow-by-
blows. Maybe I should ask Adamski to do this since he is the one that
took the bullets with Arden gone... I've asked the MOWIND race
committee to take a look at Jeff's new knee to see if it is legal. ;)

Race 1: Racing didn't start until after noon, and early it looked like
a longboard race with significant holes in the wind. Forecast was 15+
and building, so eventually the formula fleet was going to benefit
anyway. I think between 20 - 30 sails were on the start line! I took
my equipe out to cover Don Altmeyer (not that I thought could beat
him, but didn't want him to feel out of place...) However, by the
time the race began the formula boards were planing immediately and I
knew I goofed... Jeff led the whole race I think, but Uffe and Steve
Johnson were not far behind. The wind picked up quickly, and as was
the case most of the day bodies littered Kevin's jibe obstacle
course... I managed to keep up with Don, and Peter on his IMCO not
far behind, followed by the rest of the formula fleet. Given the
conditions, I was surprised the longboards did so well, would have
expected more of the formulas to shut us out... We planed on the
longboards through much of the race. Good to see Woody learning to
use his new formula, expect him to be with the leaders when he gets
the down-wind-I'm-gonna-die part mastered... As soon as I finished I
raced to shore to get my formula which was sitting conveniently on the
beach. Don also raced back to shore, and it was really cool to see
Don do half an unintended forward loop on the way to shore. Wind was
getting interesting...

Race2: Fewer sails on the start line as the wind continues to build,
and Jeff again jumped to an early lead and formulas really dominating
now. I got off to a fair start, but maybe having just raced a
longboard goofed me up because I got too aggressive upwind, went off
plane, and was soon consumed by a lot of other sails. Compound that
with a bad lay line choice (racing longboards is sure different than
formula boards...), and I was battling from last place at the weather
mark. Again, lots of litter around the jibe marks, and clear that
many were struggling in the building wind. I managed to benefit from
others mistakes, and finished right behind Jeff with Steve in a very
close third place. Longboards battling, but just not their
conditions. Looked like part of the fleet decided the wind was a
little much for what they took onto the water, and I was glad I had
elected to use my 9.3, doubt anyone was much bigger.

Race 3: I doubt more than a dozen sails on the water as wind continued
to build. Jeff off to another great start, but Peter on his IMCO
doing a great job hanging with Jeff through the first lap and well
into the second lap with Steve right behind. Though I got off to a
better start, Steve wasn't going to give me an opening and I had to
fight to finally pass Peter. For anyone who has been on a longboard
in what is clearly a formula race, you can appreciate the pure skill
it takes to compete in those conditions - my hat off to both Peter and
Don! Jeff took the bullet again, with Steve and me not far behind.

At this point we went off the water to eat, and Kevin reset the course
for downwind slalam as wind got nuts... Some of us got out to try
some slalam equipment, but everyone was tired, the wind was 30+ and
the inside was slightly offshore with obstructions. Thus, everyone
struggled to get a small board and sail out to the course...

Race 4: Ok, we can all be accused of being tired and not on the water
with optimal equipment, and that might explain the result. Only about
6 sails even made it out. After going back to put max downhaul on my
6.2 RAF sail, I came back out with a 130L board just to get out in
time. Thought things were managable, but got to the line a little
early and elected to just line up in waterstart position since the
wind was so strong and & didn't want to risk two quick jibes before
the start... Other sails showed up soon, but it was clear everyone
was sailing in survival mode... Adamski still in a 8.? sail and
formula board. Even given his talent after a few legs he dropped
out. I managed the first leg, but the 130L board with that sail spent
more time out of the water than in the water and I elected to leave
the race to get a smaller board and sail for the next race - I knew
Bonnie had rigged a 5.4 and was tired after trying that so I figured
I'd benefit from her efforts. I think everyone else but Steve had the
same plan, and the exodus would have been complete except that Steve
completed the course in tact to win and be the only one to finish.

While those willing to race in those conditions struggled to come back
out with smaller equipment, the race committee was struggling first
with its anchor given the wind, and then with the motor. Net result -
end of racing for the day with no committee boat. I don't think I was
the only one grateful to hear we were done racing for the day, I was
pooped!

That night the dinner was very good, socializing even better, and the
raffle prizes out of this world! However, the knock on my camper at
4:30am was not part of the plan, but a necessary evil as we raced to
take down the event tent before the storm line hit. After taking the
tent down, a bunch of us frantically de-rigged the sails piled up for
the next day and tied them to my four sails that I had tied down in
anticipation of big wind. All survived thankfully...

Sunday morning storms and lightning in the area meant an early awards
ceremony, with the 4 races comprising a legal regatta. Steve won
overall since he was the only one to complete 4 races, with Jeff & I
rounding out the top three. I think all would agree that the race
committee and assistance scorning from Kevin Gratton were first rate,
thanks guys!!

PS: Thanks for the new sail, and new copy of Windows Vista (these guys
really know how to do raffles...)

Hello all wind junkies out there.

Here is some clarification on some of your questions for the Saylorville Windsurf Regatta & Dam Jam as well as some more details in general with our current conditions at the lake down in Des Moines, we are looking forward to a great event.

The water level at Saylorville Lake is way above normal right now. What this means is that we will not have access to our normally 300 yards by 200 yards wide beach access at Oak Grove. Same goes for Cherry Glen lower level which is just about the same size a quarter mile further south on the lake, Cherry Glen's upper boat launch is open though. These are the two lake access points we would be located at on with normal water levels.

Due to the hight water level these lower beaches are under 8ft of water and we will setup the event "headquarters" at the Prairie flower campground (higher ground) just above Oak Grove's normal beach access. Kiters should be able to launch from the upper Cherry Glen access point (Alfie can verify this), windsurfers will be fine to launch from the Prairie flower camp ground. (normally a 300 yard walk down to the beach, now only 150)

Also we have a gotten two permits for the windsurfing event, the backup site for the windsurfing races is located at Big Creek Lake (constant water level) a 10 min drive from the main event site. This is also a great site but not good for kiters and windsurfers in large numbers to co-exist on. (similar to Worthington). We will use this for windsurfing racing in case there is to much debris floating around on the big lake. Usually the debris stays on the shores if the wind have come from the same direction for a few days, but a wind shift timed wrong with water rising could bring it out again, then we will use the backup lake.

There will be no official event for the kiters, however we want everyone to enjoy the wind and water as well as come to party together.
We encourage everyone to register for the event, the $35 registration includes DAM JAM t-shirt, lunch saturday and Sunday, Pot luck BBQ (bring a side dish) Saturday night, w/ party as well as chances to win some of our great door and raffle prizes as well. (inkluding windsurfing sails, and lots of other nice gear)

Seveal people will be there from Thursday night camping, the official event registration starts Friday from noon- 7PM
Saturday late registration in the morining with windsurfing course racing and/or slalom racing starting shortly thereafter. Sunday will be more racing and awards wrapped up at 4.

We will have "Dam Jam" signs posted for you to find the way to both the campground and registration.

Hope to see lots of people out there, feel free to post any additional questions here or email me at ujentler@...

For those of you who have not booked campsite yet, this link will take you there.

I have contacted the calendar of events committee, expect they will
finalize and publish this soon! Hatteras was great, though the trip
there & back was rather interesting with the weather challenges.
Bonnie & I won't make Toledo event this year, sad! We always enjoy
that event & the campsites there.

Greetings from Hatteras from all of us. Our week started with some real
stong winds, 2 days of 35 knot winds, one with gusts in the upper 40's.
Guys were out and overpowered on 3.8m sails.

More details from our trip can be found on Woody's and Uffe's blogs

Very good Jeff! Road trips are always an adventure, and sounds like this being one that'll stick in memory for many years to come. We're counting the days now until we are also shredding the waters of Hatteras!

Greetings to all!

Woody

I just posted the minutes from the MOWIND meeting that was held last Sunday. While I was at it I also reorganized the "Files" area so that we have a foldeer for each year (2205, 2006, etc). Current files, like the '07 Meeting Minutes and this year's regatta anouncements, will stay in the root folder until the year ends. Files that apply to all years, like the Event Guidelines, will also stay in the root folder.

As always, I am open to suggestions. Let me know if this is working out or if there are any ideas on how to improve.

Later,
Arden

Hey, Woody - that weather you sent us was rather wicked! We had a
caravan going with Bonnie, Kristy and me in front, then Kevin,
followed by two more vehicles with his brothers. Three of the
vehicles had trailers. We elected to avoid the northern route Friday
night due to the snow forecast. Little did we know that the snow was
going to penetrate a lot farther south than expected - at 4:00am in
West Virginia we had a white out in the mountains - ice covered with
snow (no salt or plows) made it almost impossible for cars & trucks to
move, especially up the mountains. We survived long enough to get to
a rest area and wait out the storm. Mike and Sherry elected to stay
in Wisconsin an extra day, though I'm sure they are getting the same
tonight!

On the bright side, 15-25mph all day today and everyone that didn't
mind the 40 degree air had a great time on the water. And yes, even
Bonnie and Kristy spent the day on the water.
