I hope this forum works well for everyone this year. I will work on
getting the MOWIND schedule entered into the group's calendar. Maybe
someone else can get some photos together to put in a group photo
album to show what a MOWIND event looks like. Any Takers?

Hey Everybody!

The MOWIND calendar looks great this year and we're looking forward to
seeing everyone on the water again!
I really want to apologize for the conflicting dates with our Moose
Regatta to Steve's Door County Breeze Regatta. I'll be sure to make an
adjustment for our event next year as to not conflict with anyone
other events.

Best regards,

Hi Woody! If you are able to move that event to a weekend that is
open, you can count on me and Bonnie making it. What language do you

I wish I coud Jeff, but I have at least 10 people from out of town already committed to holidays for that weekend. Our national holiday is also Saturday July1 and the Dryden Yacht Club is putting on a big party with live band to co-incide with the Moose Regatta. Don't want to miss out on that :)

I'll see you's in Worthington for sure!!

All the best to you and Bonnie!

I know you can't this year, but if you can in the future we will be
there. Amy chance you will be in Toledo or Fond du Lac? If not, we
will see you for sure in Worthington. Either of you getting any time
on the water? Bonnie & I were in Bonaire last week, as was Kathy. We
ran into Chris & Dave from Minnesota there also. Had a blast. Water
open on our lake now so we can get out now again, and looking forward
to joining Kevin & crew by Hatteras in a week...

Oh man! You'll certainly have the jump on us this season!! We still have 2ft of ice to deal with! I'll be snowkiting still for a couple of weeks.
We did get away for a week during the spring break to Corpus Christi for some windsurfing. Great time!! Most of the Iowa crew headed down and we hooked up for a week of fun!
I'll try and make the Toledo event, but it's a pretty long drive for me, like 20hrs!! I'll be at Windpower again this year for sure :)

Love to get to Hatteras with you guys someday!

Hey Kevin! My son and I had a great free skate session one evening on some real nice ice in our bay, but it snowed overnight and that was the end of the free skating. We did manage to get out quite a bit Kite skiing though. Margot was cruisin' too!!

Have fun in Hatteras! We'll be joining you some year!

Have fun in Hatteras Kevin and the rest of the
Windpower gang!

My dad and I are headed to Bird Island in Corpus next
Friday, so I hope Team World left some wind for us. We
both got gps's over the winter, so it will be our
first time using them. Hopefully we can get some good
speeds in the flat water.

It sounds like everyone will be in full swing for
Kevin's race in May. It should be a fun year.

Subject: Schedule Conflicts Discussion.

I wanted to start a thread discussing MoWind schedule conflicts.
While I appreciate the goal that as an organization we try to avoid
schedule conflicts so that our members do not have to choose between
multiple events in a given weekend, I'm not sure it is as clear cut
as just making sure two events do not occure the same weekend. The
fact is that even events that occure a week apart (such as Toledo
and Worthington) can force members to make a choice, since driving
to both events on consecutive weekends can be a chore. Since Bonnie
and I make that choice, I speak from experience. However, it is
unrealistic to think we can avoid these situations.

My point is that I suspect that sometimes two events the same
weekend might not be so bad. If the events are far enough apart
(ie: Door County and Canada, or Michigan and Minnesota...), I doubt
that very many of us would be impacted. Only a couple may find
themselves having to decide which to attend.

For that reason, I'm not sure it is as simple as avoiding these
conflicts. When they arise, I suggest we discuss the option -
including moving an event - but if it becomes clear that moving an
event is not an option, but that the events probably are not really
competing for the same participants, maybe we should be ok with
scheduling some conflicts.

I am curious what others are thinking relative to this...

Subject: Diversity of activities at our events.
windsurf_us001

I also wanted to start a thread discussing the possiblity of having
some diversity of activities at our events. As I help plan for our
first event in Milwaukee in many years, we have concluded that
adding a freestyle event, lessons and possibly a speed event would
be good things to do. Other variations might be more slalam events,
swap meets at events, etc...

A challenge for race directors would be to possibly develop the same
consistancy for running these types of events as we have with our
course and distance events. Should there be points for freestyle?
Speed? Etc...

I would be interested in the thoughts of the more experienced race
directors on this issue, as well as the participants that feel that
they would enjoy a little more diversity. I want to be clear that I
am not suggesting undermining the course racing that we are already
doing, as obviously we have a fairly strong crowd interested in
this. I am wondering if, for a little extra investment of energy,
we might be able to add other dimensions to our events that might
either draw more participants, more spectator interest, or just help
give our competitors more options during down time.

Your thoughts?

Bonnie and I aren't, but we wish we were. Opted for Bonaire & Outer
Banks plus as many MOWIND and US Windsurfing events as possible this
season.

Is Mark going? What is he up to these days, will he be participating
in the Maui Race Series again? I have been wondering since many in
the PWA are opting out of Formula in favor if slalam, will/has Mark
try that instead? I didn't see Mark at the Mid Winters (Calema) in
March... I didn't compete there either, back bothering me too bad,
but pretty good formula fleet (though Prichards and other big names
not there this year.

Hoping all is going well for Mark, enjoy seeing a local in the pages
of WindSurfing Magazine!!!

Oh, Mark will be there, for sure!! In fact, poor kid, he has a job teaching for
HST there for
the summer.... rough life! SO, yes, he is going to do the MRS again, the
Nationals, and
hopefully as much of the SPeed challenge as possible.
He was not at Midwinters as he had just had knee surgery for a torn meniscus and
was not
in any shape to sail. Back up and sailing now tho.
Mark would do slalom over Formula in a heartbeat, I think.

Subject: Race Classes........
sail512003
Send Email Send Email

2006 USW National Racing Tour again will feature racing classes to
suit just about every sailor in North America.

The Formula Windsurfing class was last year's most popular class.
Over 200 racers were ranked in the fastest growing class in the
world. FW class racers use state-of-the-art ultra wide boards that
offer incredible upwind and downwind performance. Class rules limit
the gear to one board and three sails per event so racers have to
choose carefully what will work for the expected conditions. The gear
is challenging to sail and a great work out. Check out
www.formulawindsurfing.org for more.

New for this year is the Hybrid class which includes any board 11
feet long or less with a centerboard. The Mistral Prodigy, the new
Olympic RS:X along with other offerings are combined into this new
Hybrid Hybrid class for the NRT. These kits blend the best of FW and
the traditional longboard one-design. One board and one sail for all
conditions means more racing for the money. The daggerboard allows
the board to race in the lightest winds and yet the modern wide
outline challenges the racers with an exciting ride in "formula"
conditions.

The Formula Experience class has been developed as an entry level
option for those that seek the thrills of high performance FW style
racing while looking for the accessibility and low cost of a more one-
design class. The US FW effort is directed by Dr. Charles Ivey and
Corolyn Boerma who have adoped this ISAF class as the official class
of Junior Racing in the US. Check out www.formula-experience.org for
more.

The 2006 Formula Experience North Americans Worlds will be held in
Hood River July 13-16. Come support Team USA!

Open Class is just that. Open to everybody and every type of
gear...any board any sail. This is the gear of choice when the
conditions range from drifters to raging winds. That way you can use
a slalom board or/and a longboard! This the most popular class in the
Midwest.

For those not able to make it to Hatteras this spring, you missed some
awesome windsurfing (and kitesurfing...) One day last week we had
40mph winds that helped knock out the winter cobwebs from our
equipment and skills, and many other days where the pace was a little
less brisk. One hilight was to watch Nevin Sayer teaching his kids to
freestyle - a joy to watch! Great food, a great time with a wonderful
bunch of fellow windsurfers and some awesome sunsets all converged to
make the long drive worthwhile. For those who didn't make it, Kevin
has already booked Windy Staton for a week in October - get your
