Stefan, glad to hear you will be heading to Hatteras! I know you will
enjoy it. The Windpower crew usually goes to Avon, and rents through
Hatteras Realty. If you go to their site
http://www.hatterasrealty.com and look at sound-side properties, you
will find a lot of great places to stay. We usually stay at Windy
Station or Sound Wave. They are next to each other, right on the
water, and since there is a deck with steps you can go right into
waist deep water, not having to walk out hundreds of yards which is
the case in some other places in the banks.
One piece of advice with the formula boards though - the sound is
shallow and the 100cm fins will find sand. When I do use a formula
board, I always use a weed fin since it is raked back, and never use a
fin larger than necessary. No matter where you sail, ask around about
depth because you can go out miles and still end up in ankle deep
water in places, like by the reef. Nasty on equipment and the body
when you are pushing the limits only to abruptly hit bottom... ;)
While campgrounds are nice and convenient (Canadian Hole, Frisco
Woods, etc...), it is nice to have a house with shower & hot tub &
kitchen, etc... and with a group you can get pretty good rates.
