Re: [mowind] Re: Mille Lacs Crossing 2007

Great points Kevin. Thanks for your input and good luck at the I-20's. Also, I'll probably see you on the water in about an hour...20-30 (41mph gusts last I checked) winds in fond du lac, YEEEEHAWWWW!

Mike, I think you are cc'd on this email. Contact me at ardenalan@... or 920-2five1-8six48 if you have any questions about getting started with the Yahoo group.

I hope people continue to voice their opinions so that MOWIND can do what is felt best by the community at large. It really does seem like we are all pretty much on the same page and just need to iron out some details, since it sounds like most of us would like to have points awarded for the course racing we do at Mille Lacs and it is just a matter of what to do with scoring those races. I would LOVE IT if the majority of racers in the crossing also did the course racing, making this whole thing a non-issue.

George, Bonnie, anyone else: Want to get a discussion going on B-fleet for 2008. I personally thought it was interesting having people run 1-lap races starting with the A-fleet at a couple regattas this year. That gave them a nice chance to spar with A-fleeters but still not have to be too worn out from having to go 2-laps. Sometimes they even ended up doing the same course as A-fleet when A-fleet would have a shortened course. The downside to this is that it did thin out the "regular" B-fleet but it does provide an interesting stepping stone for those going from B-fleet to A-fleet.

Later,
Arden

Hi Everyone,

I've been watching this discussion and I thinks it's great.  We need to continue this with future issues.  Would be nice if more people would reply.  Also at some point maybe make some options that can be voted on.

I talked with Mike last nite to first of all inform him that Myself and My brother Andy will be competing in the I-20 Nationals on Lake Carlyle just east of St. Louis.
It's sad to miss the crossing after attending and having soo much fun for soo many years, since I believe 1993.
I also informed Mike of the discussion taking place on the MoWind site.  He apparently doesn't belong to the group yet or he would be getting e-mails, I believe.

Here's my thoughts:
1st it's Mike's race he has the ultimate say.  So we need to involve him in these discussions and it is for his good to get involved with MoWind for he is in the MoWind demographics.  MoWind wants to grow races and racing overall in the Mid-west.  What's good for MoWind will be good for Mike also.

2nd the notice needs to reflect the decision clearly, to be fair to everyone.

3rd I have always felt and expressed my feelings that the extra races typically on Fri. & Sun (whatever they) are should count towards overall points.  The trophies can just be for the Crossing results but at least one can get more points for MoWind results.  This makes racers more apt to patrticipate in the extra races and it will be more rewarding for those running the races.  Those races will be more appealing to those chasing points.  In Past discussions with Mike he has indicated that he feels the Crossing should be worth more than what MoWind awards it as a long distance (2 races or double points).  I personally feel it fits as a long distance race.  The time the first place finishers take is about the same as other long distance races and the distance is equal also.  MoWind has been trying to have a course race take approx. 20 min for the first place finisher, this year that has been attained at most regattas I have attended.  So 2 races x 20 min and you have a typical crossing.  Wind Power's long distance races are right there with the crossing in length and time on the water.

4th At this point I do not feel the extra races should use the number of the entrants for the crossing.  Should use the number of those that participate in the extra races.  In the future it may be appropriate to use the total number of entrants for the crossing, but at this time with the history of not counting the races I feel it would greasing the scores.  It would be going from NO points for extra races to probably the biggest scoring event on the MoWind calendar by Far.  When most of the racers participate in the extra races and it has a history of such then I would vote to score by total crossing entrants.

That's my take, hopefully I didn't miss anything.
I'm stoked to see MoWind going strong!!!

We also need to get more dealers in our region involved with regattas, for it shows grass roots support of windsurfing.

Kind Regards

Kevin   USA 8

p.s.  I also think Andy should join the MoWind group along with Mike.  Can Arden or Jeff help them?
Next discussion B-Fleet for 2008.  Need to complete before 1st race of 2008 season???   !!!

Subject: [mowind] Re: Mille Lacs Crossing 2007

This was my point at the beginning of this conversation. First, the
Notice of Race has to identify what expectations are. Not fair to
anyone to arrive on Saturday to find scored races took place Friday.
And that decision cannot be made lightly - not everyone can make it to
a three day event, and this might actually discourage some from
bothering to come. That's not what anyone wants. Next, the NOR
should let the racers know what is going to be rewarded. Is it
possible for someone to win the crossing (or, as is the case this year
with an out & back that there is a distance race winner) and possibly
someone else wins the course racing? Or, are they combined as the
regatta winner?

We all do have a choice in what we compete, and like anyone else I
like earning as many points as possible, but personally I'd feel like
I got points I didn't deserve if most of the points earned result from
a distorted amount of course racing DNS points resulting because most
of the participants are only there for the distance race.

Since Mike isn't participating, I'm going to send him an email to
weigh in on this.
