This weekend was the Walleye Wagatta at Windpower in Fond du Lac, WI.
Conditions were excellent for racing on Saturday with 15-20 mph winds
and a great "M" course set by Dave Gratton and RC provided by Dave,
Kevin, and Jeff H. We got off 3 course races in the morning with
steady winds and then took a break for lunch and to setup a downwind
slalom course.
After lunch, we went out in ~20 mph winds for a downwind slalom race
and were able to fly through the course. A second race was started
but later abandoned due to 25+ mph gusts and hard rain coming down
about the time we rounded the first mark. It was a challenge just to
get turned around and head back to shore. Fortunately the high winds
subsided after 5-10 minutes so everyone could get back in.
Sunday we had variable shifty winds ~3-10 mph. We again raced an "M"
course, but with only 3 jibes instead of 5 as we did on Sat. We did 2
races with 2 laps and then switched to only 1 lap for a 3rd race due
to diminishing winds. After completing that race, we did a 4th race
and called it a day.
Scoring was done quickly with help from Jack and others and the
awards were started within probably 60-90 minutes of the last race.
We think that some of the changes we discussed and implemented this
weekend will help streamline our events and lay down some "best
practice" guidelines so that we have consistent events that make good
use of the available wind and the time we have together. We will
probably write some of these items up and post them to this group in
the coming weeks.
For now I am posting the scores from the Walleye Wagatta to the Files
section. Congratulations to all of the participants, and a big Thank
You to everyone that helped make the regatta happen.
Next up are the Toldeo (OH) Windsurfing Championships June 2-3 and
the Worthington (MN) Windsurfing Regatta & Unvarnished Music Festival
June 8-10. Both events are part of the US Windsurfing National Race
Tour.
Also, check out the Midwest Speed Quest. Winds are forecast for 30+
in Worthington the next several days. I won't be able to get there,
but we are also expecting 30 mph winds on Lake Winnebago tomorrow, so
I will be out there.
Lastly, if you know of anyone in the windsurfing community that
hasn't used this group yet, let them know about it. MOWIND feels that
this will be the best way for us to communicate throughout the year
and it will be the best way (other than old-fashioned word of mouth)
to find out about upcoming events, group trips, local conditions,
advice, socializing, and more.
Later,
Arden
