Scott's - Sarasota and Mid-Winters - report   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #265 of 601 |
I have posted some pictures, mainly onshore shots of the sites and of
the campground I stayed at in Port Canaveral.

see http://www.amoka.com/gallery/Windsurfing_Events/Album1.htm

The Masters/Seniors Sarasota race hosted by the Sarasota Sailing
Squadron I had only attended once before. This time around there was
a nice group of 37, about 17 in Formula and 20 in Hybrid - Longboard -
Sport. Including myself about 7 of the Ohio Michigan Prodigy fleet
were there which made for some great One-Design racing. Two courses
were set, the Formula course north of Ken Thompson park in the larger
bay area and a course just south off the park which was very nice.
Much of the bay in that area is only 3 to 5 foot deep so you could
stand in the water between races. The waters that weekend in
Sarasota Bay were a pretty aqua blue color, it got windy and it was
hot .. what else could you ask for. I think we did seven races.
It's really a great venue to do a regatta at.

The Calema Mid-Winters. This was my first Mid-Winters though I have
windsurfed in the area a several times in the past at the old Cocoa
Beach Master races. I got some light air practice in on Tue, Wed but
then Thurs great winds (15-20) were blowing all day. Friday the big
wind continued and pumped up even more with a hot south breeze, Sat
and Sunday still pretty darn good wind wise as winds switched to the
northwest and temps cooled a bit. About 35 formula, about 20 Kona
most of which were rented, 20 RSX's, 7 Prodigy and a dozen longboards
and 15 Sport fleeters made for a group of about 100 on Sat and Sun.
Tinho runs two courses which share a common up wind leg, start and a
towards the shore side finish line, the starts are staggered time
wise so there is minimal conflict between any of the fleets on the
common parts of the course, the unfortunate downside of that is the
Hybrid Fleet ran 4 races on Friday but only 2 on Sat and just 2 again
on Sunday. We could of had 3 on Sat but a foul up with their beach
master guy delayed the first start by like an hour.

The start line and first upwind mark (a good mile in distance) of the
course were excellently set. The Hybird/Longboard/RSX start had
about 30 in it and everyone was on the line somewhere at the start
making it very exciting. In all the format, site, lunches, Sat party
at the Radison ballroom were all well organized plus the weather
cooperated all week making this a good year to have finally raced in
this event.

I tent camped 6 nights at Jetty Park campground just a 10 minute
drive away. I hope to tow down my small 15' Serro Scotty trailer
next year for a couple weeks. Oh yeah, old Wisconsin Jim was down
there also fun windsurfing from Kelly park and living I think in his
little white station wagon.

I'm looking forward to the upcomming 2007 season here on the
NorthCoast, we had a couple more people join the Prodigy Fleet over
the winter, I think we now have about 10 active Prodigy racers all
within 50 miles of Toledo and they all are very experienced
windsurfers. Bic has a new Hybrid board out, the Exocet Pacer 300
is simular also in size to the Prodigy. Hopefully the Hybrid fleet
will grow and we will see more new blood this summer on the
water.

Hi Scott, Sounds like I missed another great regatta. I had a great time last fall racing in Florida. Leaving for our annual clinic in Hatteras in a few weeks....
