How's this for a twist on getting the personpower
for your next trail work session?<br>A few weeks ago,
the Southeast chapter of Michigan Mountain Biking
Association was working with the City of Novi on a 7-mile
trail in a 600-acre wooded parcel. Over the years,
various lowlifes had used it as a dumping ground, and
some of the prettiest singletrack was marred by the
sight of old washing machines and stoves, rusting out
in the woods. We (MMBA) offered the muscle to get
the stuff out of the woods and put it near the
2-tracks, where trucks could haul it away.<br>The City
threw in a half-dozen inmates from the County Jail, who
were on work release. It helped a lot, and the inmates
enjoyed the work out in the woods. Usually they're
picking trash in municipal parking lots and stuff.<br>So
when you're working with local land managers, ask if
they have access to inmates, or to lesser offenders
who've been sentenced to perform community service.
Muscle is muscle.<br>Dan

I just checked the IMBA Trail Care Crew schedule
at:
<a
href=http://www.greatoutdoors.com/local/partners/imba/trailcare/schedule/index.h\
tml
target=new>http://www.greatoutdoors.com/local/partners/imba/trailcare/schedule/i\
ndex.html</a><br>It appears that Crew #2 will bed in VT/NH from July
27-31. Even if it's not a "seminar," a session with the
crew is always informative. Often they'll walk a
"problem" trail with local MTB advocates and land managers,
pointing out possible solutions. I've done several trails
with TCC #1, and I always learn something.<br>I
suggest emailing TCC #2 for details of their visit. Have
a great summer!<br>Dan

Hello Brothers and Sisters of Advocacy! How is
everyone's Spring/Summer going? It is already baking hot
here.. Did a great ride (and found how out of shape I
am!!!) at Elk Meadows this last weekend! Just enough
technical stuff to keep it interesting with some really
fast windy sections on great singletrack!

I never made it to Denver, Jeff. We drove
straight from Washington to Fruita. If I ever do get to
Denver with some time to spare you can be sure that I'll
get in touch with you. I'd love to ride the Colorado
Trail with you.<br><br>Kevin Axt<br>Richland, WA

Welecome to Calgary in May. Temperature is below
freezing, and snow is falling outside my window as I type.
God I love this town. <br>I've made contact with my
old friends at the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance,
and was able to attend an exec meeting a few days
ago. It was great to see all the familiar faces. Even
better was to see some new ones - always good to get
some fresh blood injected into the group.
<br>Laura-Lee is now back from Taiwan! Those of you following
IMBA Canada may recognize the name. This remarkable
woman has been my inspiration and mentor with regard to
mountain bike advocacy ever since I got activly involved
with CMBA when I was 16. Has it really been 3 years
already???<br><br>Hopefully the snow will stop by the weekend. There's a
mountain biking festival at Canada Olympic Park on
Saturday. You may remember this site from the Ski Jumping,
Luge, etc. events from the '88 Olympics. Round 2 of the
Alberta DH series will be taking place, and they are
letting you use the chair lift at no charge (in the
summer, the place is a mountain bike park, and you have
to buy lift tickets)! Sweet - I won't have to climb
this weekend!<br><br>Reports from the front lines of
advocacy in the Calgary/Banff area as they
occur...<br><br>Ryan

The riding in Fruita is beautiful and is a lot
like a smaller version of Moab in places - but enough
difference to make it really fun.<br><br>We have an awful
lot of great riding opportunities because of all of
the dedicated trail volunteers out here who like to
ride and maintain at the same time! It is a great
place!<br><br>Kevin - I'm surprised you didn't let me know when you
came into town! I would have shown you some cool
trails... Some sections of the Colorado Trail that we
maintain (TCS) are as awesome as Fruita... Whether it is
riding through a grove of aspens past the elk, or a wild
windy singletrack section across a mountainside... We
do have it all.. ;-)<br><br>But I still love all of
you folks in the other states too!<br><br>Riding

Hello Brother and Sister Advocates!<br><br>The
workshop was incredible! It snowed Saturday and we got
some great site reconaissance in and enjoyed the snow.
Sunday came and was in the 60's and warm enough for
shorts. We did the trail flagging after shooting
percentage of slope with the clinometers. Then we
center-flagged what would be the trail bed. This project was on
a site that will connect Denver's Mountain Park
system with Jefferson County's Open Space Park
system.<br><br>I'll be posting some of the information in the near

That reminds me. Would anyone happen to have the
commercial that Lance did for Vector? I haven't been able to
find it in any of my normal sources. <br>Now that I'm
on the topic of biking commercials, there's a new
one out this week (Nike?) about a roadie passing an
18 wheeler, then the truck trying to pass the
cyclist and sideswipe him, and the cyclist pushing the
truck off of a cliff. Can anyone help?

I assume most of you have seen the Nike
commercial that came out a few months ago with Lance
Armstrong (overtones of dopeing, 'people want to know what
I'm on... what am I on, I'm on my bike 6 hours a day,
what are you on.'<br><br>I have that commercial on my
system in .mov format if anyone wants it. My question is
this: in the origional version, Lance says "...6 hours
a day busting my ass...". I would really like to
get my hands on this copy because, I own a Trek,
Lance is a hero of mine, and well, it's a really cool
line. Can anyone help out with a link/upload,
etc?<br><br>Ryan<br>mtnbike_advocate@...<br>ICQ#
