Hey guys,

There is a poll on the Open Gaz de France site for the favorite player. So
far, Monica is way in the lead. If you haven't had a chance to vote, please
do so to show our neverending support for our girl.

Follow this link: http://www.opengazdefrance.com/english/vote.php4

Also, I really think that Monica is really serious about fitness. Maybe
that is why she is intent on competing 6 weeks straight. This too should
help her seeding for the French thus improving her early round match
competitors. What hurts me is that I know she has the potential to beat all
the top players without exception. Sometimes she falls short - especially
lately against Hingis. I really thought she should have won both matches
against Martina - she was leading in both but choked. I hope she works on
getting over this mental block she feels when she plays Martina.
Regardless, she continues to be an incredible player and our number one idol
in the world of tennis!

Go Monica!

Alain

I agree with Joey. Monica has to play the top players, regardless of a win
or loss. Monica will not win the tournaments if she cant beat the top
players. Period. I was a little puzzled when I read that Monica was up 5-1
in the first set tiebreak against Hingis. How could she just choke like
that? I definitely feel this is a mental thing with Monica. The Williams
sisters, Davenport and Capriati dont seem to have that problem with Hingis.
Hingis is a very smart player, and I think that Monica should have won those
last couple of matches against her. As long as Monica can stay healthy, I
dont really see a problem with her playing 6 weeks in a row. It can only
help her fitness. Yes, she will tire, but you have to be able to do that
these days to compete with the "Big Dogs".

Hello you all!

I know we would all like Monica to be #1 in the
World... and if it depended on us, Monica would play
(and, of course, win) every possible tournament on the
schedule.

Unfortunately, that cannot be. And I must remind you
of somethings...
Even if Monica plays lots of tournaments, towards her
ranking only the best 15 (?) will count in - of the
last 52 weeks... and Monica has played something like
14 tournaments (I think I read that in the WTA tour
site). We all know that Monica played (and WIN!) some
lesser tournaments at the end of last year.

However, I must ask if all the efford is really
necessary... specially because she hasn't entered
bigger tournaments such as Key Biscane (Ericson
Open)... and I (as all of you) would like to see
Monica winning... how could she win if she is so
tired? or does she think a 2 month rest is excelent?
maybe...
:)

I think that playing 6 weeks in a row is not good, she tried that last summer
and pulled out of the Canadian Open. I don't see what the rush is, she will
get tons of points this spring and should wind up with a good seed for the
French Open.

I think she HAS to play the top players more & more - win or lose. The more
she plays them, the more she'll get used to their games & beat them easier.
She must stop getting tight in matches like the final against Hingis. She
MUST know that she can wipe the court with Hingis, but yet she usually
struggles against her. I'm not saying that Hingis is a push over - she's a
very smart player - but the other heavy hitting top players don't usually
have that much trouble with her the way Monica does. I do think it's totally
mental at this point.

People have to realize that those days of her going a season and only losing
like 2-4 matches are over. The competition is very tough now and all the
games are totally elevated, so we have to expect all the players to have
several loses each season & yes some will be tough ones.

Also about Jelena Dokic entering the event, I think the writer meant that it
puts Monica out of the top 4 making her draw tougher. She's probably better
off getting one of the top players in the quarters instead of a final anyway,
look at her win over Venus!!

My best to you all,
Joey

The draw is out and its not really that bad.
Although Jelena did enter at the last moment, that means that Monica now has to
play a first round match, when she was the fourth seed she did not.
Monicas first opponent will be B. Schett. In the second round probably M. Serna.
Now it gets interesting. In the quarterfinals, she could meet either N. Dechy,
D. Bedanova, (we all know what she did to Monica the last time they played.) Or
most likely Justine Henin.
If she gets past there, most likely in the semis could be Jelena Dokic or
Sandrene Testud. Monica can not meet Venus unless she gets to the Final,
because she is in the top half of the draw.
Good luck Monica!!!

Thank you for the weekly notes and news. However, the above comment
puzzled me. How is Jelena Dokic being inconsiderate to Monica just by
entering a tennis tournament?

Allow me to have some comments:

1) Due to the system (rule of the game), those who have a lower ranking
(like Monica) would naturally have a tougher matches. When Graf and Capriati
was coming back, they went through the same test and they did it eventually.
Monica needs to face it and to improve her ranking. This is not something to
do with luck.

2) It seems not sensible to expect that all top ranking players were
dropping out of the tier I or II tournaments just because they need to
'consider' if this would badly affact seeding of Monica. :-) Tier I
tournament must be more competitive by nature. If one agrees that Monica
should be considered competent player, she need to play more tournaments of
tier I and II. You should remember she win three tournament in a roll. This
seemed to be good. But I think it killed a lot of energy while getting only
fewer points. Monica has openly told that she would not allow her to commit
the same schedule again.

Dear fans, let's be positive on Monica and wish her win all those difficult
matches by her own effort. I wonder if we would be satisfied to see Monica
win another Australian Open by defeating Amanda or Mary.

Any reflection welcomed. :-)

Ehrlich

-Monica Seles lost to Martina Hingis in the finals of the Pan Pacific
Open 6-7, 6-4, 3-6.
-Monica gave credit to Hingis for her win, but also mentioned that
she needs to stop making so many unforced errors.
-Monica's 2002 record is 8-2.
-Against Hingis in the first set tiebreaker Monica went up 5-1 and
had two set points.
-Monica has entered the Doha tournament, that takes place the week
before Dubai.
-Monica will remain number 10 in the rankings with 2749 points.
-I really think that Monica choked in this match, I mean she was up 5-
1 in the tiebreaker. I think if Monica was going to win this match it
would have to be in tow sets, because she had two very hard matches
previously. This is the same story again, Monica having extremely
tough matches, and Martina having a piece of cake type opponents.
-Monica gave Martin Hingis the break in the third set with a double
fault!
-I think that entering Doha was not a very good decision, I mean with
this Monica will have to play 6 weeks in a row. I hope this does not
cause an injury.
-Monica's nest tournament is the Open Gaz de France, and no the draw
has not come out yet. Jelena Dokic has just entered, which
unfortunately puts Monica as the fifth seed. There could be a
possibility of Monica meeting Venus or Henin in the QUATERS!
-I am very disappointed that Jelena entered the Open Gaz de France.
She shows such inconsideration towards Monica. I am also disappointed
because Monica might not make the final, because the final will be
televised on the Oxygen channel in a week.

After another tough match in Tokyo against Anna K., our Monica managed to
again shine her bright light. She defeated Anna 6-3/3-6/6-3. Yeah! She
now goes against a familiar face in the finals of this tournament, Martina
Hingis. Due to the type of court I think Monica has better chance of
prevailing. I can see Monica beating Martina and taking the slam eventhough
Martina has been favored to win. Go Monica!

Below is the post-match interview:

2 February 2002

Postmatch Interview with Monica Seles (USA)
Defeated Anna Kournikova (RUS) 6-3 3-6 6-3

Q: You had a really tough win last night against Alexandra and then another
tough one today, is that the last thing you wanted before you play Martina
Hingis or is that the sort of thing that you do want to sharpen you up?
A: Well, going into the match I really didnÕt think that far what I want or
not. I knew that both opponents would be tough and this court is such an
equalizer, because it is so fast and in skidding, so there really are no
rallies or too much tactics involved. So, I am just happy to really pull
through both of those matches because they were very, very close.

Q: Recently, or just over a week ago, you lost to Martina in the Australian
Open in the semifinals, is there anything that you are going to change about
your game, tactics wise, and how do you rate your chances?
A: Well, I will probably sit down with my coach tonight and discuss that,
but obviously it is a totally different surface than the Australian Open.
So, I am sure that both of us will have to make some adjustments. Every time
I play Martina, it is really close, each of them went three sets. I have
never played her on this surface. I know that she has had some good results
here. It is going to be a very interesting match and I am going to have to,
as always, play my best tennis against her. SheÕs Martina. What else can you
say?

Q: You have obviously had a couple of tough matches, but you always are able
to get the tough points and the break points. How do you keep you
concentration and how do think that your years of experience have
contributed to that?
A: Well, I think that different players play different points, how they
play. If you look at the top players, they always play well the top points
in all situations. On this surface, as I keep reiterating, you just have to
go for it and that is what I try to do and that is what my opponent tried to
do today. And today, I just won more of the important points.

Q: Anna just mention prior to this that you were the stronger player
mentally on the big shots and she was also coming off a long layoff, which
you also recently experienced, do you think the period you had off
contributed to your mental strength?
A: Yes, I had seven months off last year, almost around the same time as
Anna, so I know how difficult that is and we are in the same boat with our
foot injuries. It is always tough, but I think that you just try to
persevere and work through as much as you can when you are injured and then
when you get back, be as patient within yourself until you find you game. I
had to go through that and she has to go through that and I really thought
she was playing some great tennis this week.

Q: Anna told us you were her favorite player when she was growing up. Has
she told you that and if she has, what was your response?
A: I was very flattered, definitely. I am good friends with Anna. WeÕve
played doubles together and we used to share an agent together. It was very
flattering. She remembers my match in the French against Steffi almost one
point at a time. It is great, a fantastic complement for me. That is for
sure.

Q: What is the secret to enjoy what you do as a job, or do you even think of
tennis as a job?
A: I have been really lucky to really find something so early on in my life
that I love to do. When I picked up tennis, I definitely didnÕt think it
would be a job. Now, it is a job, because you have to be professional about
your schedule. I mean, I know my schedule a year in advance and a lot of
other things that go with it. But for me, it is the only thing that I want
to do. I have been very lucky, really. Everything has come thanks to tennis
and I have to thank my parents for that. Hopefully, after I stop playing
tennis, I will find something else that I love as much as tennis, as playing
tennis.

Q: During a match, what goes through your mind?
A: Pretty much getting to the ball, and then at a changeover, I just try to
think if my opponent had a pattern, or if I am getting into a pattern.
During the games, especially here, where everything is one or two points
here or there, you really donÕt have time to think.

Monica defeated Anna Kournikova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the finals (for
the first time, I think) at the Pan Pacific. Once again, Monica will
be meeting Martina Hingis after playing some tough matches, while
Hingis is daisy-fresh- let's hope Monica is sharp and hits a lot of
winners and fewer unforced errors than last week against Hingis. It's
nice Monica might be allowed some redemption for last's weeks
devastating loss (yes, Monica had a great Open, but I'm still not over
that close semi-final score) if she beats Hingis and takes a tier 1
title, but by making it to the finals, her ranking should improve win
or lose.

This is going to be a bruise for Monica tomorrow she is going to kill
anna if she can manage to recooperate from the match angaint
stevenson, Monica has a great chance in improving her rattings these
next few weeks, but i dont recomend it becase if she where to get in
the top 6 she would potenitaly have to face the belgium girls,
cljusters, and hein at the french and the would be much harder than
playing someone like venus who is weaker on the clay,,,,

-Don't you guys think that Monica should maybe play in Antwerp? I
mean she is already going to be in Paris, and the only top
players here are S. Williams, Mauresmo, and Henin. I mean entering
this tournament and having decent results could do wonders for
Monica`s ranking. I mean, if Monica feels like she is physically
able to play 6 weeks in a row, all power to her. But there is a fine
margin between burning out, and over playing so Monica should be
careful. However, I think Monica could do it, but to remain safe,
maybe she should just stick with her schedule:
      -Pan Pacific Open
      -Open Gaz De France
      -Dubai Duty Free
      -Indian Wells
      -Family Circle Cup
-Almost every knowledgeable tennis fan is picking Monica to defeat
Anna Kournikova in the semifinals of the Pan Pacific Open
-Someone posted on www.wtaworld.com that the oxygen channel will be
broadcasting both the Pan Pacific Open, and the Open Gaz De France.
-Monica wore her all baby-blue outfit in her quarterfinal victory
over Alexandra Stevenson.
-Monica saved 11 set points in her quarterfinal match against
Alexandra Stevenson. I have said it before, and I will say it
again, "Monica Seles is the best match player in the history of

she fought through and hope she makes it to the finals, then beats
Hingis. However, if Anna wins I'll be rooting for her to take the
title, just to get the press off her back for a while regarding
the "winless Anna" stigma. Facing their uncoming match, Anna had some
nice things to say about Monica's game; I think Anna's more gracious
than a lot of the media gives her credit for- she recently refused to
get caught in the uproar regarding Rios comments, and just stated he's
a friend and she basically thought the situation was blown out of
proportion.

Monica is up 6-0, 2-0 on Alexandra Stevenson. This score is excellent
considering how much talent young Alexandra has. Keep it going
Monica, four more games. Go Monica!!!
