Gunther Parche's attack on Monica Seles in 1993 is a tragic piece of history.
The 19-year-old was stabbed in her back in front of the crowd during a
quarter-final match in Hamburg.
Seles' career was derailed in that moment, and her life was never the same. She
was a teenager dominating women's tennis, and on her return to the tour two
years later actually won the Australian Open again before announcing her
retirement in 1998.
Despite her success in Melbourne, she never fully recovered her once dominating
form, and finally had to concede her crown as Queen of the Courts to her
greatest rival and toughest adversary, Steffi Graf.
It is unfortunate, yet ironic, that Parche's attack on Seles was caused by his
obsession for Graf to be world No.1, the ranking held by Seles at that time.
Arguments are still going on about who would have been the best - Seles or Graf?
Women's tennis was the big loser as it prevented what I think would have been
the greatest rivalry in women's tennis - just ahead of Chris Evert v Martina
Navratilova. Their rivalry could have lasted at least 30 matches, and I think
Seles would have won a few more slams than Graf.
Though Monica is my favourite player I can't deny Graf's talent. She might have
got the better of Seles on grass and was really a challenge on any surface. But
Monica came up with the big shots at the right time, and that's what wins
majors.
