Hello Everyone:
As hard as it is to admit, I have to agree with most of what Evan said
regarding Monica, her fitness, her ability to pull out big matches, etc. I'm
as big of a Monica Seles fan as anyone and there's no question that I feel
she is one of the greatest of all time. It does seem however that when
Monica has that chance to win a big title, she falls apart. This is such a
contrast to the "Pre-stabbing Monica" that was probably the most mentally
tough player of all time. She always figured out a way to win a match, even
if she wasn't playing her best tennis. Contrast that to the way Monica loses
matches nowadays. Lindsay definitely had to question herself regarding her
own ability to close out matches. Lindsay has lost several matches that she
should have won after she came back from her injury last year.
When Monica won that first set in a pretty tough and close tiebreak, that
just had to deflate Lindsay and make her think if she ever is going to win
another close match. Then, Monica just didn't take advantage of that
situation and she let Lindsay back into the match.
Look, I will always be a tremendous fan of Monica's and I will always
appreciate her skill and all of her other numerous great qualities. It's
just very disappointing to see one of the most mentally tough players (in the
past) just not pull out these big matches when she has the opportunity to do
so. I've seen her do it many many times in the early 90's and that's
probably what made me such a fan of Monica's.
I just wish that she was able to do it now also.
