Bring your helmet to get a free breakfast!
Hello cyclists!
1. Bike breakfast Wednesday 26th July 7.30am-11am
2.. Cycle for sustainability
***************************************************************
1. The first bike breakfast of semester will be on Wednesday 26th July,
7.30-11am on the lemon-scented lawns outside building 63. Don't forget
your helmets!
****************************************************************
2. Cycle for sustainability (apologies to those receiving this twice)
After a highly successful campaign last year we are sending this invitation
for you to be a part of Cycle for Sustainability 2006!
In 2005 a team of 10 individuals with a passion for sustainable living came
together to deliver an education campaign to inspire and engage school
groups and the broader community on issues and actions toward
sustainability. Over 5 months we cycled more than 4500km between Brisbane
and Hobart, performing a comical skit to 3000 school students and hosting
many public information stalls.
This year the education journey will commence in mid August in Sydney and
finish in Hobart in mid December. We are now building the team for 2006 and
there are many opportunities for you to contribute or get involved, such as:
- Join as a core team rider, an exciting opportunity to develop your
community education and team building skills and work with others
who are
passionate about sustainable living.
- For those with less time to spare, join the action as a stage rider
for two weeks or more.
- Apply your passion for sustainability education to help develop a
range of education and curriculum materials.
- Contribute content for our evolving website.
- Join our mailing list to receive inspiring project updates,
'Postcards from the road'.
- SLF home base support – we are also looking for a dedicated
individual to provide home base support with the SLF team. This would
involve some volunteer work either at the SLF office in Melbourne
and/or at
home, assisting the road team with liaising with schools, community
groups
and identifying media opportunities.
Being involved in this project is your chance to inspire others and 'be the
change you wish to see in the world' (Gandhi).

so far there's been nothing caulfield-related on this list, is this
likely to change? It's actually quite depressing for those of us at the
forgotten campuses, where bike access is getting worse not better
despite increased interest in commuting. I appreciate that your
resources are limited and if it's not possible to do anything for us
we'll stop bothering you

We close 4 km of Sydney Road to cars and trucks between Bell Street and Brunswick Road and turn the street over to bikes and pedestrians for 6 hours. Cars still cross Sydney Road at main intersections - trams will operate as normal.
Stroll the footways, shop, stop for a cake and coffee, go for a walk, or cycle, up to Coburg and back. Your friends, family, even young children will be protected from car traffic between 8am and 2pm.

1. Bike breakfast
Sorry for the delay folks, but I will be organising another bike
breakfast for WEDNESDAY 31st MAY, 7.30am - 11am. Venue; lemon-scented

2. Melbourne Ride of Silence
Saturday May 20, 2006
10:00 am - 12:00 pm
This event does not repeat.
Event Location: Federation Square - Refer Flyer in Files section
Notes:
Melbourne cyclists will assemble at 10am, Saturday 20th May at
Federation Square. They will ride via the Melbourne CBD to Parliament
House for a dignified gathering, with celebrity speeches, media and
interviews. Simon Gillett will be present at the Melbourne Ride of
Silence. In July 2005, a horrific road accident in Germany killed his
wife Amy Gillett-Safe and left five of her Australian cycling teammates
badly injured. All of Australia grieved with Simon and also with her
family and friends.
************************************
3. Meeting our transport challenges
Anyone who would like to view the State Governments policy for transport
over the next 10 years can go to this website
http://www.doi.vic.gov.au/doi/doielect.nsf/2a6bd98dee287482ca256915001cff0c/b5bf\
2c81823e9c87ca25716c001a648f/$FILE/MOTC_Full.pdf
Pages 18 and 55 relate to bikes. The goverment has dedicated $135
million to improving bike paths, however, there is no detail on how that
funding is to be allocated. Wait and see.
************************************
4. The Bikery news
The bike mechanic, Tom McEndrick has
been offered a job producing on-line video for The Age/Fairfax and will
be leaving us in 3 weeks. The
good news is that he will be replaced by Rob Prain, who has been around
the transport office for years, so bike repairs will still be happening.
Also, we have just placed an order for rain jackets for the upcoming
winter. These will probably sell for around $50 each and will probably
be in stock in around 2 weeks time, so if
you need something to keep you dry, warm and visible while you are
cycling this winter, come in and see us!

5. McBUG website

Please join if you want to participate in online discussions, view
calenders for upcoming events, get reminders for important events like
free breakfasts :-) and get access for useful links and photos.
I also have an email list for distribution of regular (monthly) bike
bulletins. Please let me know if you find yourself on both lists!

Hi cyclists,
I have put a link to the "Meeting our transport challenges" document
on the website for all those who want to read it. Page 18 and page 55
are relevant to cyclists (Action 8). In my view, the public transport
positives are a third rail track running from Caulfield to Dandenong,
and the extension to the Principal Bike Network on page 18 looks
promising, although it does look like more bike lanes on roads rather
than dedicated paths. Over the next 10 yesrs, $135 million out of the
$10.4 billion will be spent on bikes, but some of that will be on
advertising and 'changing behaviour'. If you live in the north or the
west, you'll do well out of the plan. Negatives are no rail link to
monash (although a smart bus from Rowville to Huntingdale station),
and lots of very vague statements like 'promoting healthier choices'
with a few photos of people on bikes and no definate plans to back it up.
Feel free to read the plan and air your views.

Round the Bay in a Day \__(_)`(_)__(_)`(_)__(_)`(_)
Hi everyone!
I did a bike tour of the Great Ocean Road with a friend over Easter
break. It was great and I totally recommend it to everyone.
Check out this neat link
http://www.greatoceanroad.org/cycling/pdfs/11_gor_ride_4_stages.pdf
The link divides the ride over 4 days but we did it over 5.
Warrnambool - Port Campbell - Apollo Bay - Lorne - Torquay - Geelong
I strongly recommend the Warrnambool - Geelong direction (better in
terms of wind, road shoulders, and traffic). If you want details or
tips, just ask... I love talking about the trip. :-)
Do you know of any other nice rides? I'm thinking of doing the Great
Vic but I'm not sure whether biking with hundreds of other people
would be as good as just a few (certainly a different experience).
Anyway, I'm done procrastinating... back to reading!

1. Bike Breakfast
**********************************
Thanks to all who attended my first Bike Breakfast. Keep spreading
the word and encouraging your friends to ride!
2. The End of Suburbia
**********************************
Environment Victoria have been organizing with the Transport Office to
screen the documentary "The End of Suburbia" at the Monash University
Cinema on Thursday 4th May from 1 - 2.30pm. "The End of Suburbia"
explores the changes in our society due to rising petrol prices. For
more information, go to www.endofsuburbia.com.
3. Exploring Whitehorse by Bike leaflets
**********************************
The Department of Sustainability and Environment have sent me new
leaflets with all the bike paths around the city of Whitehorse. If
anyone wants some, come to the Transport Office. We also have maps of
bike paths around Clayton and Melbourne.
4. The Bikery; Get ready for Winter!
**********************************
Time to get prepared to ride throughout winter. Legal requirements in
Victoria are for a red light and red reflector on the rear of your
bike, and a white light on the front while riding at night. The
Bikery stocks lights, reflectors, waterproof panniers, reflective
strips and mudguards at cheap prices to keep you clean(er) and visible
on the roads. The bike mechanic, Tom, is usually in on Tuesdays and
can repair bikes to keep them running smoothly.
5. Proposed alterations to Bayview Ave/Gardner Rd intersection
**********************************
A fellow cyclist has raised with Monash Council the problems of
getting onto Gardner Rd from Bayview Ave to exit Monash University
from the North-West. I have been forwarded email communication as
follows:
"Council has long believed that Bayview Avenue is not an appropriate
access route to Monash University and we have been in discussion with
the University's Facilities and Service Division about removing the
section between Gardner and Clayton Roads for this purpose. The
concept is to modify the T-intersection to effectively disconnect
Bayview Avenue to the west. This would remove right turns and hence
the dual queuing problem. At this stage I am unable to indicate any
commitment to implementation."
6. Change to message posts
**************************************
I have temporarily changed the group settings so that everyone can now
post to this group. You can now let other cyclists now of upcoming
rides, or discuss problems getting to and from university. This is
just a trial to see how many messages are posted; you are the users,
tell me what you want!
Any comments, please contact me on Rebecca.Craythorn@....
