My favourite bit...

"Cycling is becoming a legitimate form of transport,'' Mr Pallas said.

I'd say cycling has been a legitimate form of transport for at least as long as there have been road rules relating specifically to it.

But maybe not, considering motorists still feel the need to drive into us. Two week ago I was riding along a split two lane road near Berwick with a friend. I was about 50m behind as we were going uphill and I'm less fit. A ute flies past me at 80 km/h (the speed limit, fair enough), a bit too close for comfort. The ute continues at full speed, honks, holds his line and proceeds to smash into my mate's seatpost with his left hand mirror. He hit hard enough for the mirror to break right off, and didn't even slow down! Mate goes flying, luckily only minor injuries and amazingly no bike damage. The driver eventually came back five minutes later, obviously had an attack of the guilts (or maybe just wanted his mirror back).

So be careful out there, while we're still 'becoming' legitimate.

Regards,
Matt
