Can't add any real recommendations on new models, the shed at home is
too full of bikes for a special purpose commuter for me!

If you're used to commuting on a MTB then you're probably aware of it,
but I ended up using an old road bike for commuting rather than my
MTB. The narrower bars come in handy for negotiating some of the
trickier parts of the traffic you'll encounter -- such as this

Hub gears are a good idea I have concluded after dealing with an old 3-speed internal hub that seemed to just keep working. Going with no-name brands, now...
