How often does this happen?

The Carleton men beat Gustavus last night in St. Peter, 65-59, to solidify their hold on 2nd place in the MIAC. St. Thomas hammered Augsburg to remain in 1st at 13-2, Carleton is 12-3, and Gustavus now is waaay back in 3rd at 8-6. The win was Carleton's 12th in a row after an 0-3 start in the MIAC.

There's more: The Carleton women also won at Gustavus last night 57-53 to drop the Gusties out of a 2nd place tie. Concordia was idle and remains in 1st at 12-2. St. Ben's clobbered St. Cate's and is 12-3. Gustavus is now 11-4 and Carleton 10-5.

Then there’s the statewide high school ratings, which showed some movement this week.

Girls

AAAA—Hopkins 17-2, South 20-0 but a 1-point win over Southwest on Tuesday, Kennedy 18-1, Tartan 19-2 are the Big Four. Kennedy remains #20 in one national poll and #5 in the midwest, but I’m thinking Hopkins really is the best team.

AAA—Marshall 18-2 still on top, Benilde-St. M. moves up at 14-4, Hibbing still unbeaten 17-0 but the Iron Range has never done much in girls ball. I say watch out also for DeLaSalle (#6 at 14-5) and Hill-Murray (#7 at 16-3). But I think Benilde is the team to beat.

AA—Breck 13-2 stays on top, while Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Barnesville, both unbeaten, are next. Rochester Lourdes loses again and drops to #8 at 17-3. I am ready to say that Breck, and not Lourdes, is the team to beat.

A—Osakis 17-0 is #1 and only remaining unbeaten. No clue.

Boys

AAAA—Elk River 15-1 hammered a good Osseo team on Tuesday, Cretin 16-1, Hopkins 15-2 follow, and Stillwater jumps from nowhere to #4 at 13-3. Hopkins beat Mpls. Henry for the 2nd time on Tuesday by 15 points. Cooper is new at 15-2 and #9 but, seriously, the new North Suburban conference (is that what it’s called?) is not one of the better metro conferences. Hopkins is still the one to beat.

AAA—You know all about Duluth East 15-2 and St. Thomas 14-3. Rocori moves way up to #3 at 14-3 while Henry drops to #4 at 14-5. Then Marshall 15-2 and Waconia 17-1, who were #1 and #2 just a couple weeks ago. Whoever wins the new Mississippi 8 conference will have to be reckoned with—right now, Monticello is #9 at 14-4 but Cambridge and Buffalo also look good though unrated at the moment. Still I’d say St. Thomas and Henry will be there at the end.

AA—Braham 16-1 and who cares? Well, Pierz (#2, 15-0) and Virginia (#4, 14-0) are still unbeaten.

A—Maranatha 16-0, Osakis 14-0 and Cass Lake-Bena 18-0 are on top, for what it’s worth. St. Bernard’s (#4, 14-4) is a real threat and Spring Grove (way down at #9 but 16-0) deserves a nod. Then again, there’s 2-time defending state champ RTR, inexplicably #5 at 17-1....they and the Bernies will be there at the end.
