Northern Iowa indeed beat Iowa last night, though they needed an overtime to do it, and at home, 67-63. The Tartan kids done good. Eric Coleman 19 pts, 6 reb, 2 asts; Erik Crawford 9 pts, 4 board, 5 asts, 10-of-22 FG and 7-of-8 FT between them in 78 out of a possible 90 minutes. Northern came back from a 7 point half-time deficit to win. Northern is now 5-1 with a 68-61 loss at Iowa State. They are among the favorites in the MVC, where Indiana State beat Indiana last night on a neutral court to remain unbeaten at 4-0. Northern should easily get to 7-1 before going on the road to LSU, Dayton and Bradley. Another Tartan grad, Kwadzo Ahelegbe, is signed to start at Northern next year. Coleman is their leading scorer and rebounder at 15 points and 7 boards.
Among the women, New Mexico clobbered the Gophers at home but they are a young team and couldn’t get the job done on the road, losing to 15th ranked Arizona State 73-61. No shame in losing on the road to the #15 team of course, nor any for the Gophers in losing in the Pit to the #18 team. Blowing a 21 point lead to Nebraska at home presents much more worry longer term. They return to action Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Barn against Washington State. WSU is 6-1 but have beaten only one team with a winning record (at Boise State in OT last night). They beat 1-6 Cal State Northridge by one point at home. Will Broback start finally? Will the Gophers get the ball inside? Will Schoenrock hit a 3? Will the defensive intensity come back?
Big games tonight: Valpo will try to upset Marquette in Milwaukee. Valpo has 2 Mn frosh on the roster. Igbavboa from Tartan has played in all 4 games but just 7.5 minutes per and is scoring 1.8 ppg with 2.2 boards. Arden Skoglund has yet to step on to the court during a game.
Among the women 6-0 #10 Notre Dame at 4-2 #24 Purdue will be instructive. Purdue is young and hopefully won’t be improving too rapidly. The Gophers are generally picked for 3rd in the Big Ten and Purdue #4.
