Yes, this is a quiz. Who is Dick Hawkins? Why would mnbuckets subscribers
care that he passed away recently at the tender young age of 59?

The Long Answer--Did You Get It?
Unbeaten Edina was favored to win the 1964 boys state basketball tournament,
but Proctor (23-0) was just as heavily favored to emerge from its bracket to
get to the final. Unsung Luverne instead hammered Proctor 80-57 in the semi,
but Proctor's weakness had already been exposed by Benson.
Benson came into the tournament just 16-7 but threw a mighty scare into
Proctor before losing 64-63. Actually the game wasn't quite that close as
Proctor led 51-42 after 3, and 63-56 with 1:42 remaining. But they couldnot
put Benson away. Benson got within 63-61 with 18 seconds left, then the
Braves inexplicably let the clock run down to :04 before fouling. Proctor
made a FT and Benson a last second FG for the final score.
Dick Hawkins scored the FG with 18 seconds left and also the one at the
buzzer for Benson and finished with 20 points to lead Benson scoring. This
was the game in which Proctor center Bob Laney had an incredible 33 points
and 32 rebounds. Benson then lost to Hutchinson 57-52 in the consolation
final but Hawkins was named all-tournament.
(Laney was too and went on to play college ball at Concordia (Moorhead),
where he is now a member of the Cobbers' athletic HoF.)
Hawkins served in the Navy 1964-67 and lived in the Twin Cities throughout
his adult life, according to the obit. He received a new liver a few years
ago and particiapted in several Transplant Olympic Games. He is survived by
3 brothers, his mother who now lives in Mora, a wife but no children. His
visitation was in Wayzata and funeral in Plymouth.
