Re: [mnbuckets] Bruce Smith
Bruce Smith played in the 1937 state high school basketball tournament, OK? (My uncle Tom was a teammate.)
Maybe you saw that the Smith family is selling some of his memorabilia include his Heisman. His widow Gloria was quoted saying “I hope there’s not a backlash.”
I’m biased on this. I met Bruce Smith. I was just a kid, of course, he died of cancer in 1967, later the same year my father died of cancer. I met Gloria. I didn’t know his kids who were younger than me. But my mom (whose father, my grandfather, was an attorney and a Farmer Labor judge in Rice County Court) worked as a legal secretary for Bruce’s father Lucius, whom some of you probably know also played football for the Gophers (class of ‘06 I think). At the time of his death about 1985ish (?) he was the oldest practicing attorney in the state at the age of more than 90, maybe 92, maybe more like 95. I mean, he was old. My father worked with Bruce’s brother Wayne, the gay dentist/church organist. Eldest son George was a lawyer in his father’s firm but died young in his 30s in the ‘30s or early ‘40s. So I knew a lot of the family.
Anyway, I just thought I would say if there’s a “backlash” on this: Get a life.
