The Epp family history is linked closely with mine. First of all, Henry was Rueben's brother, the youngest of the Epp children. When their mother was nearing death when the children were all quite young in the late 20's, she arranged to have all the children dispatched to various families in the Mountain Lake area after she died. Rueben was sent to my Father's home to live so I grew up told that my "Uncle Rueben" was a legendary basketball player on the great Laker 1939 State Champion basketball team. The second link with the Epp family is that my great-great-great-great-grandmother Trudy Epp is also the great-great-great-great-grandmother of Matt Groening, creator of the Simpsons.

Rube played a couple years of varsity ball at the U, though it is doubtful that he was skilled enough to have played except for the fact that the war had diminished the talent pool very substantially. Still, he played.
Henry played for the NAIA national championship with Mankato Teachers College in 1948.

Another notable player from Mountain Lake, Henry Epp, center on the 1939

83. He served in World War II as a Navy pilot aboard the USS Nehenta Bay in
the Pacific Theatre. After the war, he continued his basketball career at
Mankato State College where he played guard and was the only NAIA
All-American from Mankato State. He coached four years at Tracy before
moving to New Ulm where he taught and coached junior high basketball for 30
years.
