John Hollinger at ESPN rates the best, worst and average picks at each of the first 30 spots (the current first round ) in the past 20 NBA drafts (since the draft was reduced to two rounds.) http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2009/insider/news/story?id=4206291 Since he drafted Kevin Garnett and doomed Timberwolves fans to another 14 years of his executive genius, Kevin McHale did not draft anyone who graded as the best at the slot he was picked, but did draft one player who graded as the worst (Corey Brewer) and acquired four more players who graded as the worst at their slot (Jason Collins, Trent Hassell, Michael Olowokandi and Sebastian Telfair) and notably traded away another who graded as the best at his slot (Sam Cassell) -- plus a future lottery pick! -- for Marko Jaric.
By the way, there were some second round picks in this year's draft who look like steals -- DeJuan Blair, Chase Budinger, Nando De Colo, Danny Green, Patrick Mills, DaJuan Summers and Sam Young. Blair, Budinger, Summers and Young were projected to be first round picks in every mock draft I saw, Mills was projected as a late first rounder in most of them, and De Colo and Green got high marks after the draft. Of course the Timberwolves did not get any of them.
