The Gophers seem to be playing reasonably well, from what I can tell from here. And their best 5 players are home grown. Which brings me to a point I have made before. While I am all for recruiting out of state STARS, I look at this year's team and ask again how it makes for a stronger program by recuriting out of state replacables. Does anybody want to argue that the Gophers are better with Damian Johnson, Lawrence Westbrooks and Kevin Payton than they would be with Ben Woodside (23 ppg), Brett Winkelman (22 ppg) and Matt Jannings (17 ppg)? And that is just if they stayed a tiny team like they are now. If they had been successful in recruting Cole Aldrich and Jon Leuer (did they try and recruit Leuer?) they would have the depth so they could always have a legit Big Ten big man playing center, and they could move Tollackson to power forward sometimes if they needed to get bigger.
It would not be North Carolina or UCLA, but this would be a good team. (And would be even better if they had Eric Coleman instead of Jonathan Williams.)
GUARDS McKenzie, Woodside, Hoffarber, Nolen, Isaiah Dahlman
FORWARDS Coleman, Winkelman, Janning, Cory Johnson
CENTERS Tollackson, Aldrich, Leuer, Williams
WALK ONS Abu-Shamala, Busch, Saunders
Anybody notice that Hoffarber is already averaging more than 10 ppg?
