The Gophers' second exhibition game provided the same result--at a glance.
First was a 38 point win, now 39. And Kelly Roysland led all scorers both
times.
But there was something new this time. Do you want the good news or the bad
news first?
OK, bad news. The front court is terrible. Leslie Knight, Ashley Ellis-Milan
and Zoe Harper combined for 15 turnovers in 57 minutes. They also scored 22
points and added 16 rebounds. But 15 turnovers. Ouch.
The good news. Freshman Korinne Campbell scored 17 points--getting to the FT
line for 14 attempts (making 11)--in just 18 minutes. She also had 9 boards.
At 6-feet tall, she's listed as a guard. And she was the top-rated freshman
coming in, but Brittany McCoy was more impressive in drills and has started
both games while Campbell has come off the bench. And Campbell, frankly,
didn't show much in her first college (exhibition) game. But maybe it was
just the jitters. She showed up last night, and showed a lot of stuff. She
will get a lot of minutes, and a lot of them will be in the front court.
OK, a lot of minutes for freshmen McCoy and Campbell, both, that's not
really good news. But Campbell looks now like the real deal. She will have
her struggles as a freshman, but she will be a solid contributor before
she's done.
Now about the 4 and the 5....
