Re: [mnbuckets] Mike Karbo

I wonder if he played for St. Thomas’ great 1949 team. 1949 was of course the year of Hamline’s greatest team—the Mikkelson/Haskins group that won the national title. But Hamline split with St. Thomas and only tied for the MIAC title that year. (Hamline’s only other losses were 2 to the Phillips Oilers and Bob Kurland) The presidents of the two schools agreed to decide the post-season NAIA tournament entry with a coin flip, which was won by St. Thomas. Hamline only got to play in the NAIA because the New York NAIA district didn’t send anybody.

Today's Strib has an obit for Mike Karbo, who died Oct. 18 at age 83.  According to the obit, he coached Benilde to the 1963 State Catholic Basketball title and also the 1961 Catholic football title.  He also coached De La Salle to 4 Catholic baseball State Championships.  That's quite an impressive record in 3 sports.
He was also a fb/bkb/bb star at De La Salle from 1938-42, and at St. Thomas College after the war.
