Larry Exel died on Thursday of leukemia. Visitation is Monday, funeral
Tuesday.
Larry of course played for that great Roosevelt state champion teams in
1956. I believe he graduated then and was not on the repeat champs in 1957.
He started at the U but transferred to UND, where he was captain of the
basketball team.
He coached at Perham and Farmington, and then for 29 years at Mound.
He was preceded in death by, among others, older brother Ken, who played for
the Gophers and for the Rock Spring Sparklers in the 1943 World Professional
Basketball Tournament. It says he loved attending Gopher and Carleton
women's basketball games--I wonder if his daughter Kathleen played ball? Or
maybe it meant Gopher men and Carleton women?
"Remember him not as someone who lost a courageous year long battle to
leukemia but as a humble man (etc.)...and (as) a father who will never be
loved by a daughter more; a rich man indeed."
Amen to that.
