Speaking of obnoxious announcers, my anti-favorite case was the 1959
final between Wayzata and Carlton. Carlton at that time had a chance to
be the team from the smallest town ever to win the title, though
Edgerton would have made that moot the following year anyway. But Beutel
lived somewhere out west and of course the Ch. 9 studio was out that
way, and as a 9 year old kid I remember at the time that I thought
(listening to Beutel) that Wayzata was the greatest Cinderella story of
all time. It was only years later that I found out just how small of a
city Carlton was and what an upset it would have been if they had won.
Then of course there was (I think, again) Beutel's favoritism for Edina
in 1966 when there was some down that the Cake-Eaters would actually
win. In '67 and '68 it was all moot anyway. To this day, BTW, I insist
that Henning beat Edina in the semi. In one of the many OTs, Henning had
the lead and forced a turnover. One of the Peterson's went down for a
lay-up, which would have clinched it. An Edina player undercut him and
sent him flying off into the seats (literally) and the totally gutless
ref didn't call it and of course the rest is history. But Henning can
take solace in their 1927 state class B title.
