Re: [mnbuckets] Re: NBA Draft

Just remember, ten years ago McHale traded a shotting guard for a point guard drafted back to back, and we ended up with Stephon Marbury instead of Ray Allen.  Hope Foye-Roy is not a sequel.

It's silly to think there WASN'T anything to be had in the second round, because there are ALWAYS good players available in the second round -- useful role players, starters, even stars.

Here are some examples from the second round of the previous ten drafts.

USEFUL ROLE PLAYERS

Shandon Anderson

Trevor Ariza

Keith Bogans

Matt Bonner

Ryan Bowen

Greg Buckner

Rasual Butler

Brian Cardinal

Jarron Collins

Francisco Elson

Dan Gadzuric

Othella Harrington

Jason Hart

Eddie House

James Jones

Jason Kapono

Ronald Murray

Lee Nailon

Eduardo Najera

Malik Rose

Darius Songaila

Salim Stoudamire

Anderson Varejao

Jake Voskuhl

Luke Walton

Earl Watson

STARTERS

Rafer Alston

Steve Blake

Mark Blount

Predrag Drobnjak

Chris Duhon

Gordan Giricek

Ryan Gomes

Trenton Hassell

Mark Hendrickson (oops, that MLB)

Marc Jackson

Stephen Jackson

Marco Jaric

Anthony Johnson

Kyle Korver

Todd MacCulloch

Jeff McInnis

Cuttino Mobley

Zaza Pachulia

Ruben Patterson

Bobby Simmons

Alvin Williams

Mo Williams

STARS

Gilbert Arenas

Manu Ginobili

Rashard Lewis

Mehmet Okur

Michael Redd

That's list will undoubtedly increase as additional players (some prospects from 2005 include Martynas Andriuskevicius, Brandon Bass, Andray Blatche, Travis Diener, Monta Ellis, Daniel Ewing, Mickael Gelabale, Orien Greene, Ersan Ilyasova, Amir Johnson, C.J. Miles, Ronny Turiaf, Roko Ukic, and even Bracey Wright) develop into useful NBA players.

And it doesn't include the guys were weren't draft at all during that same period, like Malik Allen, Chris Andersen, Carlos Arroyo, Chucky Atkins, Charlie Bell, Raja Bell, Earl Boykins, Jackie Butler, Jose Calderon, Matt Carroll, Marquis Daniels, Maurice Evans, Reggie Evans, Adrian Griffin, Udonis Haslem, Troy Hudson, Damon Jones, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Keith MacLeod, Milt Palacio, Smush Parker, Bernard Robinson, and Damien Wilkins.  Oh, and Mike James, Brad Miller, Andres Nocioni, and Ben Wallace!

In those ten draft, the Timberwolves chose in the second round Louis Bullock, Gordon Malone, Andrae Patterson, Igor Rakocevic, Rick Rickert, Blake Stepp, Marcus Taylor, Loren Woods, and Bracey Wright (the only one who MIGHT turn into anything.)

The Woofies never even used a second round pick to take the undrafted Alan Anderson and Voshon Lenard.

The fact that the Timberwolves never draft anyone worthwhile in the second round is an indictment of McHale, not the available talent.  And while it lacked a LeBron or a Yao, this year's draft was supposed to be very deep and should produce an even higher number of useful players than normal.  Just not for us.  Thanks again, Kevin.

The most insane thing of all—well, aside from Isiah Thomas—has to be the 4 UConn Huskies picked in the first round, not that they probably didn’t belong there, but that the team accomplished so little. OTOH it’s also true that nobody in the draft got dissed like Marcus Williams and Rudy Gay didn’t exactly get all loved up either. And I had seen Boone in the lottery before the workouts. And Hilton Armstrong, the only one of the 4 who was drafted any earlier than he could possibly have been, nobody thinks he is anything but a journeyman, a career back-up.

Still, the question for me is whether the Wolves have improved themselves. You got Foye, you got 3 wasted 2nd round picks and maybe it is silly to think there was anything worthwhile to be had anyway. And you got $1 million and, I’m told, another $1 million available by not re-signing some free agents (Banks?). What is $2 million gonna get you? Some teams get great value for $2 million. With the Wolves, if they don’t pay twice as much as a guy is worth, they tend to get very little. So we’ll see. But it says here that Foye better be the second coming of Chauncey Billups or else.

Why are you applying the term "sane person" to the NBA draft?
