Okay, so after telling myself that the weather always changes by the
time the weekend rolls around and trying to believe it, it didn't change
by Sunday morning. We left for the race in a downpour, but it was only
8:00 so it had to get better. If not, I always tell myself, once you get
good and soaked, it won't matter, so just race and try to have fun!

Well, at about 9:15 or so, it stopped. Yahoo.. so what if the roads were
wet, at least it stopped pouring and we all were out and about warming
up and feeling good that at least it wasn't raining. It sure was a
chilly day though, and some good hard winds to boot!

The waiting is the worst part, us cat 4 women got to go last but not
least, and for only 5 signed up by the night before, 7 more brave souls
came out to ride in the unknown weather to make 12 of us total.. much
more fun with more!

OFf we went, with the wind pushing us out rte 392, wow, what a nice easy
start to a race, no work for that first 7 or so miles.. then up Parker
street we went, well that was all fine til we opened up at the top, very
windy for those rollers out in the country.. 5 of us managed to get away
and stay away from the pack, but we had to work so hard into the wind,
seemed like every corner put us into more headwind. Even pacelining we
had to be going a meer 13 or so mph for a bit of the time... felt like
we were crawling.. I looked at my watch, I just wanted to at least
finish faster than last year, who knew it would be this windy! Well, we
got through the rollers, the wind, the wall and headed the last 6 or 7
miles back to the finish.. well, more wind than you can imagine.. One of
the girls in our group was so strong, she managed to end up pulling all
of us to the last corner in town before we headed to the corner that
would take us up to the finish.. she was tough, we were all thankful!
then there it was, the long hill to the finish, we rounded that corner
and up we went to the finish line that was moved even further up the
road to help to string out the larger men's fields.. fun for us, okay
right!!! we didn't need much more stringing out..

anyway, Ruth, who led us into this wind, and through town, the strong
Cornell racer, took off up that hill, she was awesome, I chased and
chased until my legs could no longer hold much, and started slowing
down, though I did manage to get a bit closer (close only counts in hand
granades and horseshoes though, unfortunately) and the rider behind me,
was able to take me on and leave me right at the line and take 2nd
place, she was really good too.. I ended up in 3rd place, and actually
to my surprise, was 7 min faster than last year!!! how great is that!!
Rode with a great bunch of women and had a great personal best time..
and big cookies for celebration after!!! a really fun day...

In the Cat 123's marsha lost her pedal off the bike somewhere on the 2nd
lap so she had to quit, darned it.. no pedalling with one foot for that
far of a distance.. and Margaret came in 9th place doing a great job...
I could tell more, but I didn't race that one!!!

Good day for everyone. Charlsie did awesome in her new Sho Air Team
issue with her sparkly new bike, 5th place in cat 4 women.. we will keep
racing with you charlsie!!!

Great Day Everyone!!

Hello Everyone!

For over a week now I have had the luxury of training and racing here in Chattanooga, TN.  My coach Mark and his wife Kym have been my host, and the riding here is terrific.  The weather has been pretty cold, and  for yesterday's 5 hour ride it never got above 30 degrees, but with no ice and snow on the roads all you have to do is dress for it!  The time flies by on these rides, as it is so good to have a great  group of people to ride with -- especially when they are on the same page as you in their training.

Kym is always looking for new adventures on her road rides, I guess so that they compare somehow to mountain biking, which she races at the pro level.  Yesterday we climbed a hill called Sulphur Springs Gap that was dirt and gravel, topping out at some ridiculous grade.  I was in my 34 x 27 about three pedal strokes into the climb, which for me lasted 25 minutes.  The challenge was to keep the bike moving forward, to avoid getting sidetracked or lose traction  in all of the rocks and gravel, forcing you off the bike.  I made it to the top without walking, thank goodness. My pride was at stake!  This climb would have been hard enough on a mountain bike, but it was really a challenge on skinny tires and road gearing.  (For those in the know -- I felt like I was on a combination of Hang Glider Hill and Mt. Washington!  This made Potato hill look short, although I have not been up it in a while and may have forgotten its length.)  There were other climbs on the ride as well, but the best part was coming down the switchbacks of Lookout Mountain, back down into Chattanooga.

It is cyclocross season here, so I raced 2 races last weekend and will do another 2 this weekend before I head home.  The weather has turned cold here, and Sunday's ride was sloppy.  It was only Kym and me in the 1/2/3 race, so I got second.  Saturday's race weather was nice, and there was definitely competition in that race.  I held on to third, beating out a very strong girl on a singlespeed.  What a treat to be racing cyclocross in January, or to ride outside for that matter.  The cross scene here is similar to that in New York.  The difference in Tennessee is that their Local Association -- TIBRA -- has been in existence a lot longer than our LA in New York so there is more continuity within the state.  A few promoters are putting on a series of races, and all of the results are tabulated into one big state series.

I know the weather has been pretty mild at home.  Phil has been giving me the rundown of all the road riding he has been doing.  He stayed home so he could snowmobile, but has managed to log in a lot of road riding instead.  I selfishly hope the warm trend continues, but it looks like it will be pretty cold when I return home on Tuesday.  Time to get out the studded tires or to break out the skis.

Life has not been without work here.   Mark and Kym are both coaches, and the three of us are usually on the computer when we are not riding, often at the same time, taking care of of business.  Eat, sleep, train, work, it is all about cycling.   Lucky me!

OK, I miss everyone.  But Chattanooga is a great cycling community, with gifted riders and a climate that is friendly to winter training.   A nice place for me to visit, that is for sure.   I hope that all is well in your world.

See you soon!

Happy New Year & Good News!  So far we have Terry cycling returning as a sponsor and also William H. Lane (thank you Tami), we are in the process of submitting requests to our other sponsors and will keep you all updated!
All Terry brand items are wholesale less another 10% off!  All orders must be placed through Sharon Collins as listed below.

We are beginning to create the race calendar for 2008 as most of the NYS races has committed their dates, there are a couple of major date changes to be made aware of.  The ever popular Syracuse race weekend will NOT be on Memorial weekend as historically done so!  It will be held May 17-18 instead (let's hope for dry weather!)  Fitchburg will be one week later than usual and will start on Thursday, July 3rd.
The Rochester crit has evolved into an Omnium weekend and will be held August 8-10.

We are looking for some women who are interested in joining us for some fun racing this season!  We would like to emphasize that there will be absolutely no pressure!  We would like to help everyone learn riding skills and have fun while getting some great exercise!  Depending on how much sponsorship money we receive, the team will reimburse members for their race entry fees.

Please watch for future updates and start planning your calendar!  Empire State Games will be in Binghamton this Summer!  This is a great time to start training :)

We will continue using our same uniforms, If you know of any new riders who may need a jersey, please have them contact me as I still have extras :)

Thank you,
Marsha

Hi Sharon,

We have just completed our 2007 season with some stellar performances during the cyclocross season and are shifting our gears back into training mode for the Winter!  We are very pleased to report that our youngest team rider, Charlsie Donnely, has recovered completely from her second brain surgery to remove the remainder of her tumor and was able to again compete at Junior Nationals placing top 10 in each event, placing 8th at the Saturn Rochester criterium, and winning the junior event at Chris Thater Memorial Criterium!  This amazing young woman, only 17 years of age, recently won Road Bike Magazine's sponsorship for overcoming brain cancer.  We are very proud of Charlsie!  Keep watching as we are sure she will continue to improve, this is one gal who has the drive and desire to become pro!

Thanks to all of our sponsors & racers, our team has donated over $6500.00 to the mobile mammography unit at Lourdes Hospital our first three years of racing!  We continue to bring new riders into the sport and mentor our development riders to help them progress in the sport!  We have over 30 women members who compete in mountain, road, cyclocross, triathlon, bmx in addition to casual riding.

Last year, four of us traveled to New Jersey and competed in the Giro Del Cielo (A Woman's stage race)  it was the MOST FUN we had all year!  A well organized stage race catering completely to women!  Shelley Reynolds took top honors in the time trial, 3rd in the crit, and 7th in the circuit race to place 2nd overall in the stage!  Shelley also placed an impressive 3rd in the Altoona Points race this year!

We would like to thank the entire team at Terry Precision Cycling for bringing us women's specific cycling and athletic gear and for your sponsorship these past 3 seasons.

For the 2008 season, we will continue to mentor our beginner racers and focus on bringing them out to our races and encourage them to try larger stage races in addition to our New York list of races.

We would be thrilled to continue our relationship with Terry Precision with complimentary saddles for 6 riders, and would also like to help promote Terry products & Women's cycling with some Terry prizes at our club's Spring Race in Binghamton.    Any Terry products (socks, water bottles, nalgene bottles or any items you choose) donated for the top 3 women and junior women would include us promoting Terry as a sponsor of the Binghamton Circuit Race on flyers, egroups and on bikereg.com.

We will continue to include the Terry saddles in publicized photos, Terry logo on our jerseys, on our website and Team BannersOur team is registered as a non-profit 501c organization, therefore all donations are tax-deductible.

Hi Marsha,

The reason I am emailing you is because we are looking to create a “bike rodeo committee.”    Since conducting bike rodeos are relatively new for our program, we have tended to rely on the same volunteers to help at each rodeo….We are hoping that by creating this bike rodeo committee we could expand our group of volunteers and hopeful have people assigned to specific events well in advance.  This would give our volunteers a bit of a break and with the expansion of our volunteers  may bring about more child participants.  The committee would also act as an advisory group by giving us feedback on how to better execute the rodeos.

We are looking to meet once a year, in February, to discuss the rodeos for the year.  Right now we are looking at about 4 rodeos tentatively scheduled and would ask that our volunteers commit to working 2 rodeos a year.  I was wondering if this might be something that you and your husband may be interested in doing and any of your cycling members as well.  If you have any ideas of who else may be interested in participating in our rodeos, I would truly appreciate it.

Again, thank you again for volunteering at our Farmer’s Market Rodeo.  You and your husband were a great help!

Take care!

The late fall is often the most important time of the year.  It is these months that set up the upcoming year, as well as time to look back on the positive results from last season and look forward to new goals and opportunities.  Often, many athletes think, "…the season is done, let's just pack it in…"  On the other hand, others think, "…let's capitalize on this year's progress, and really dial in on some new goals…"  Too many athletes take the approach of continuing hard workouts or sporadic workouts, while in fact in most cases it is time for the body to recharge, reload, and re-energize!  Thus, the next few months ahead is an excellent opportunity to take your fitness higher than it has ever been – to learn to develop the aerobic engine and all its potential.  This is where metabolic testing (you knew there had to be a pitch somewhere) can really help you dial thin gs in, and make sure all your workouts are on target – to ultimately help you have the confidence that low end Z1 and Z2 workouts pay off!  They are the foundation, there are no shortcuts.  Everyone knows a hard workout, but few of us have the faith to realize that to reach one's potential it is done one capillary and one mitochondria at a time – the strongest houses have the biggest foundations and bricks.  It is in the workouts ahead, that makes next season.

Thus, I hope to have the opportunity to work with you at CP Cycles, on Saturday, November 17th from 8am to the last test.  You can e-mail cpcycles@... or tclewis@...  to book your appointment.  Best of all you can e-mail me at intelligentfitness@... if you have any questions!

I look forward to working with you, and to helping you reach your potential.

Train smart, train on target, rest as hard as you train, get fast!

I have an easy up canopy, I believe it is 12 x 12, very simple to put up and perfect for putting registration table under.   It is easier to draw people's attention to registration using a tent, we can put in it the grass if parking lot space is limited.

Hi Marsha,

That sounds great that you can come!  We truly appreciate some new faces at our events!  We are not sure about how many kids we will get.  We have been doing a lot of promotion with flyers, press releases and word of mouth.  I have heard that there has been high attendance at these Farmer’s Markets, so hopefully we will get a good turnout.   I am not sure if the tent will be possible to put up. We have been given very limited space because we are sharing the parking lot with the Farmer’s Market.  Scott Reigle of BMTS is going to be asking for more space for the rodeo.  Do you know how big your tent is and would it be possible to utilize some of the space under it for possibly the registration table?

I will be there at 9am to set up.  Scott and I will be there early to take pictures of our set up before the event for our Bike Rodeo Kit Binder.  We are asking volunteers to show up around 10:30am.

Talk to you soon!

Christine

I just wanted to give you a heads up- I have been receiving emails in my bulk folder stating they are from yahoo.  They are titled- Account Limitation, Account Suspension, or anything along that lines.

DO NOT OPEN THEM UP!!!!  I was curious about what it was the first ime.  When i opened it; the email contained an attachment.  It said that my account has been suspended due to violations.  When I tried to open the attachment- my virus scan picked up that the file contained a virus.

I contacted Yahoo Helpdesk who told me that these emails are not coming from Yahoo but are a virus that will completely crash your computer.  They said to keep deleting them as they come in.

Just wanted to give you a heads up about this.

It was an absolutely picture perfect day on Sunday as 95 riders came out for the Buck Hill Cyclocross race in Trumansburg, NY!
A very interesting course with some slippery corners, bumpy root sections and the infamous pile of wood chips (and I mean a BIG pile!  At least a dumptruck amount of chips piled into several whoop-de-doos), a couple ditches, a nice long road section and a real long gravel driveway section.

Sarah K, on her shiny new Blue (in her very first cross race ever!) came out to take the win in the Open Women's category!  Awesome job Sarah!

I did great during warm up, taking all the right lines at the proper speed and it all went out the window at the start of our race.  As we headed into the very first slippery turn, I repeated my slip from last week's cross practice and wound up sliding out in the turn.  I hopped back on the bike, pedaled around the bend and realized my handlebars had been knocked crooked from the fall.  Had to get off the bike and straighten them out before jumping back on effectively starting the race in last place about 30 seconds behind everyone.  I hammered the road and driveway sections to try to gain time and take it easy through the technical areas to make sure not to fall again.  I was able to catch and pass the mountain bikers, then Abbie, then Karla, and a U of R woman before heading into the wood chips again.  Some spectator had been reconstructing the beaten down chips during the race and built a mini steep ramp that sent one of the cookies guys sailing and he ended up with seventeen stitches under the eye!  I was lucky enough to see the change and slow down, but still wound up running off the chip pile through the yellow tape and into the field for the long way around but staying upright the whole time.

Overall, I ended up in second place in the Master's women's category with $20.00 in prize money for second place to add to our earnings!

This Sunday is Swandrome cross at Glenn's.  Should be a blast :)

Hi Sarah,

Thank you so much for your note, and for racing with us this past year!  I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we wish you the best of luck in your racing!
You have grown leaps and bounds over the past year and I look forward to watching you progress again next year!

Congratulations on the awesome year you had, winning at Bear Mountain, upgrading to Cat 3 and being on Mission in Motion and also the ESG team (Sarah, Tami and Amy did a fabulous job representing Central at ESG's!)  It is awesome that our team has started a trend and more women's teams are actually forming in Central New York!  It will make it much for fun and interesting next year!  Hopefully when the NYC teams come up, us CNY teams (MIM, VB and VS) can take turns giving them some competition :)

Good luck next year, I know you will continue to learn and race well with the support of the Velosportivo team, Amy and Maria are excellent racers as are the men on the team and you will do great!  Keep up the great training.

Everyone,
This is so exciting to see riders excel and move up the ranks, first Charlsie's awesome news of winning her sponsorship and now Sarah!  I truly believe that both of them have what it takes (the drive, determination, passion and the youth) to continue on to great things beyond our local scene!  It will be exciting to keep watching them grow and race with different teams.  I had been in contact with Sharon at Team Terry a couple months ago trying to put a bug in their ear about offering some of our growing riders a spot on their team in order to give them a great opportunity to learn from other great riders.  I had talked to Rosie also quite a while ago trying to form a developmental progression where our team would be a starting point for new riders and then possibly move up to the Terry team.  If more develops, I will keep you all in the loop.
I would love to see our team continue to be a good starting point and stepping stone for many new riders who would like to get into the sport of cycling.  So, as long as there is interest, I will continue to be here to help out!

If anyone is interested in coming to cyclocross at Ely Park on Tuesday & Thursdays, I will be there early to help go through mounting and dismounting and running over barriers before the practice races begin, just bring along your mountain bike and be ready for fun and a great workout!  This Sunday is the first cross race in Trumansburg, it's only $15 and the weather is looking great!  Next Sunday's race is at Glenn's in Freeville!  Hope to see some of you give it a try, it's a hoot!

Have a great day, and if you're lucky enough to be outside on this gorgeous day, get out and enjoy the scenery, the leaves are already starting to change!
Marsha

Hello,

First I want to thank everyone for your advice and expertise. It has been a great experience riding for this team the past year and a half. This will be my last year racing with Mission in Motion. I've had a great time but I just don't think I can be fair to the team and always do the races that are best for the MIM cause.

I think I will be on the Velosportivo/Syracuse Bicycles team next year racing with Amy. This is also Wayne's team. I really hope that there are no hard feelings with this decision and I truly look forward to seeing and racing with everyone in the future. Thank you for the opportunity to be on this team, there are some awesome women on it!

Charlsie Donnelly found out last Friday that she was chosen as the winner of the Road Bike Action Magazine $10,000 sponsorship contest.  One man and one woman were chosen from all the applicants.  The contest was looking for a cyclists who has overcome challenges, yet persevered in their pursuit of improving as a cyclist.  Who better to win this contest than Charlsie?  When she asked me what she should write, I told her to simply tell her story in her own words.  She wrote what amounted to a seven page manuscript.  It was a very moving account of her life since her initial cancer diagnosis at the age of eleven.  The particulars of the contest are in the link I have attached:

http://teamvelosport.com/10k.php

She and I will fly out to Las Vegas on Tuesday, September 26, for a 3 day visit to Interbike.  She has some press conferences, official acceptance appearances, and some “meet and greet” with the stars of cycling.  One of her press conferences is with Bob Roll!!!!  I get to play chaperone / paparazzi!  It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!!!  Just in case the link doesn’t work, this is what she has won:

Brand new Specialized Tarmac road bike

Helmet, shoes, gloves

Oakley Radar sunglasses,

FREE airfare, hotel, etc. ALL expenses paid trip to Interbike for herself and her “chaperone”

3 full bike kits (3 shorts, 3 jersey, etc.)

$500 cash for cycling expenses

Other goodies I can’t remember right now

Congratulations to Charlsie!

Shelley

Hi, Marsha:
Nice article on the 26 mile race. It makes me feel like I was right
there drafting and strategizing. It sounds like you guys were a little
better organized than the 13 mile group. However, I think we made the
most out of our collective talent. That last hill was like a steamy
oven but what a good time it was overall. I found that staying focused
really helped me. I just kept thinking "cookies, cookies, cookies" and
I was able to keep going. Well anyway, the photos are posted at the
following link.

Please enjoy them and forward the link to others if you wish. Have a

It was another Sunny, gorgeous day in Montrose, PA for the annual Applefest Bike Race!  Thanks to Ron, Jeanette and his multitude of awesome volunteers who worked registration, marshalled the course, and provided complete results so quickly!  What a bonus to be able to sleep in, get to the race in plenty of time, hang out and eat some of those great MRS. C's cookies and still get home in time to do the weekend chores!

The 26 mile Race....our "20mph controlled start" was more like 30 and I spent the first few miles gasping for air trying to catch up to the pack only to lose them on the first climb.  OOPS!  Thankfully, my teammate Tami had made the break with the group and was the only woman up there.  It became my job to make sure the other women did not catch up to her.  After losing sight of the pack, I rode along with Holly, a VERY strong rider from PA who could climb very well; Kurt who had taken an early jump on the front but had fallen off the field when we hit the hills, and Pat, my wonderful husband who sacrificed himself to protect me for the rest of the race :)  What a guy!
Holly, a long distance rider on her sleek, 15 pound Orbea was smart and strong, we had to do some nifty maneuvering to try to keep her from riding in the draft, and we still were riding well enough to start catching dropped riders.  Just before the first KOM climb at mile 12, I saw a Mission in Motion jersey ahead riding solo.  OH NO!  Tami had dropped a chain on one of the climbs and had fallen off the pack.  I immediately knew we were going to have a fight on our hands for the KOM and possibly the finish with as strong as Holly was riding.  As we approached Tami with 500m to go, I yelled to Tami to GO and I hesitated to watch Holly to see if she would contest.  We both stood and sprinted for the kom, Tami crossed first, I never looked back, but Pat said that Tami & I had taken of with such determination that it must have discouraged our competitor and she decided to not chase.  Pat and Kurt then bridged up to us making sure not to drag anyone else along.
We began pacelining and picking up other riders and had a great group of 8 riders along the back stretch leading to the hills to the final KOM.  The group started breaking apart as the sun was hot and taking a toll....we were all scattered along the hill like Autumn leaves after a windstorm.  I glanced back and noticed Tami had fallen back, I could not see Holly, but not wanting to take any chances, I sent Pat back to retrieve Tami and I caught back up with Kurt to stay out of the wind.  Pat did a great job pulling Tami back up to us and with less than 1/2 mile to go, I dropped my chain (something I hadn't done in over three years)  Just one of those absent-minded moments of not paying attention to my gearing.
Overall, I had a great time and was able to ride with a really great bunch of people.  This race brings out the nicest people!

Good Job Ron and everyone involved with putting on the race!  And Congratulations to all the finishers!  Awesome Job to Ruud Racing / TVC's Sergey for his upgrade to Cat 3 and his second place finish!  Keep up the great work!

Get ready for Kross!

ALWAYS A GREAT TIME in Montrose for the annual Apple Festival Bike Race!

Awesome cookies, snacks and drinks with great local competition and the the best group of people to socialize with afterwards!

This is an extra $200.00 up for grabs for the Men's course record!  It keeps getting bigger each year until someone breaks that record of 1 hour 5 minutes!
Also, an extra $25 for the women's course record and I know there are several women out there that have the ability to crush this time of 1 hour 13 minutes!

Yahoo won't let me attach the flyer, but you can find all the details on montrosebikerace.com and pre-reg is on bikereg.com.

See you there!

To All:

On Saturday, September 15th, the Colgate University Cycling Club will be hosting the 2nd Annual Colgate Fall Classic in Hamilton, NY. It will consist of three events: the Colgate University Hill Climb Time Trial at 11 AM, which is a 1-mile uphill battle to the finish through the campus; the Payne Valley Circuit Road Race at 1:30 PM, which consists of multiple laps of a 12-mile loop depending on ability; and the Tour de Hamilton Kid’s Race at 12:30 PM, which consists of multiple laps on a 0.7-mile depending on ability.

The 2nd Annual Colgate Fall Classic has built upon the successes of the 1st Colgate Fall Classic. We have kept the course the same, hired local police to manage traffic around the start/finish, and increased signage prior to the turns in order to increase safety. We have also been able to make this year’s prize list bigger and better than last year’s. We hope that those who joined us last year will return and spread the word about our growing race. In order to thank the returning racers for their support, we would like to offer a $2 rebate in race entry fees on race day, whether you register online or on race day. So, be sure to let us know that this is your second year at the Colgate Fall Classic!!!

On behalf of the entire Colgate University Cycling Club, we look forward to seeing you on September 15th for the 2nd Annual Colgate Fall Classic.

Best regards,

Subject: Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk

We walk to celebrate all breast cancer survivors and to provide hope to every person affected by this disease.

We walk because we know that hope starts with us. Because we can make a difference. Because we want to help build a future where breast cancer no longer threatens those we love.

We walk because fewer women age 40 and older had their yearly mammograms last year and because many still do not have access to care. We want to change that. By walking, we will.

We walk because we know the American Cancer Society is the only organization available anytime, day or night, in 3,400 communities across the country to help all people touched by cancer … and we don’t ever want that to change.

We walk because of people like you patients, survivors, families, and friends. We walk so that you will continue to benefit from the American Cancer Society’s free breast cancer programs, such as transportation assistance to and from treatments, lodging for those having to travel long distances for treatment, one-on-one emotional support from breast cancer survivors, assistance with the appearance-related side effects of treatment, and much more.

We walk because the American Cancer Society has been waging war against cancer for nearly a century, and our commitment to defeating the disease has never wavered.
