Two Mimsters showed up to do battle at the third race in the NYCROSS series Stephentown Cyclocross on Saturday -- myself and Tammy Lewis. And it did not take long to find out that due to the course and weather conditions the "cyclo" part of the sport would be in short supply. We were wondering why we even needed a bike!
Gary and Pamela Toth graciously opened up their home and their beautifully wooded yard to promote this race. They laid out the course during Friday's sunshine, and although it had parts that were rather rocky, it looked to be a different but fun cyclocross race. They swore it was completely rideable.
Mother Nature had other ideas. Friday night it poured rain, and the rain and wind continued all day Saturday. Races started at 9:15, with the C race, Master men's race and the B men's race all taking place before the Elite women and junior race started at 12:30. The course was a rocky soupy holey mess by the time we got to the start line.
Tammy and I lined up with two other women -- CBRC's Jenny Ives, who was tied with me for second place in the series, and Hannah Walton, who won the bronze medal at the 2005 National Championships for the 17-18 women. A small but strong field. Jenny and I were tied for second place in the series, with series first place not present at the race. My goal was to continue to amass good points in the NYCROSS series.
The gun went off and Tammy flew into the lead. She had a mountain bike, and was hoping that its greater gear range would assist her up the long climbs that we with cyclocross bikes would have to run. And it seemed to be working. In her wake I was doing my best to ride everything, getting into my competitors' way in the process. It did not take long for Jenny to run by Hannah and me, though, so Hannah and I got off our bikes and headed to the deep mud at the base of first long run-up.
Also at the base of the run-up was Tammy, trying to dig her dropped chain out of the narrow space between her chainring and her frame. She was struggling. Jenny took off up the hill with Hannah not far behind. I felt like I had leaden shoes and could only muster a determined walk as they scurried away.
At the top of the hill was the only spot that was flat and without rocks. Of course, it had two New England sized barriers, and by the time I got to them Jenny was completely out of sight. Hannah and I were going back and forth, but she got ahead of me in another sloppy section. As I struggled to move forward, trying to remount, Tammy came up behind me and rode by as well. Ugh, I was having a terrible time. But at least I was able to ride down the greasy descent, and was keeping Tammy and Hannah in sight. One cheering fan reminded me that THIS was my game -- 'cross! -- but I felt like a fish out of water.
Things got worse for me. In the second lap, as I tried to shoulder my bike at the foot of the longest run-up, I tripped and fell. The bike, halfway onto my shoulder, somehow came around and chainringed me in the back. How rude! I scrambled up, totally dropped, and pushed forward hard.
Over the barriers again, with hoards (it seemed like) of screaming fans. Encouraging me to go on. OK guys, I wanted to say, this is not as easy as it looks! But I kept moving forward, hoping to at least narrow the distance between myself and my competitors. I got my act together, cleaned up what riding I was doing, and started running more and slogging less. From my former vantage point behind the Tammy and Hannah, I could see that in certain places it was faster to run or walk than to ride.
Before I knew it (ok, eventually...) I was catching up with Tammy and Hannah. The three of us stayed close together and I remember crossing the barriers hearing one guy exclaim how exciting this race was to watch. We were really pushing each other!
On the other side of the barriers was another greasy rocky climb that had dissolved into a run-up sometime during the day's first race. On our second to last lap the three of us were now all next to each other. I gave it all I was worth and got ahead on the rocky run-up. By now I knew what lines I could ride at the section at the top and then down the greasy descent, but everyone would know what that was by now. I rode as hard as I could at the top and let it all hang out on the descent.
But the going was not all smooth for me. After I had established a gap I fell running over the big pile of rocks, and I could not figure out how to untangle myself and bike and stand back up to walk! It seemed like an eternity, but when I looked back I still did not see anyone there.
Last lap. Ugh, my legs and lungs. I was going hard in hopes of catching Jenny, but I never saw her. But at least with a second place finish to her we would be assured of a duel royale at the series final. Surprisingly, I did some of my best riding and running of the race on that last lap. Maybe because I knew that the pain was almost over. Crossing the line, I was relieved to be there. About a minute and a half later Tammy crossed the line, and Hannah finished about a minute behind her. We were all thrilled that the mud slog was over. Everyone had raced so hard.
In retrospect, it was almost fun. It was great training for any races coming up, because surely none of them would contain as much running as this one did. Great mental training, just being able to sort out what would work the best for each part of an ever-changing course. This will suit me well for Nationals!
As for Tammy, I am sure that if she had not had issues with her bicycle her early flier would have been something for all of us to reckon with. She got such a gap right away, and having smaller gearing to ride up the long climb would have been great! This was her first race and I know that she will be back. Watch out everyone!
Another weekend of 'cross. Time to get rested for next week. I'm just hoping those courses will be more rideable :)

Hey Everyone, The guys at Chenango Point have generously offered up their shop on Saturday,December 2nd as a site for some Professional LT and VO2 and AT testing to be done. There are a couple more tests that can be done as well. Not positive of all the different tests available. He will also be doing these tests at Sport Tech in Oneonta in January. Date to be determined as of yet. Joey Adams from Intelligent Fitness in Shelbourne, VT will be there with his set up (trainer bike, mask, and equipment) to do various testing so that you can determine your goals for next seasons racing. He is a sports physiologist specializing in these tests for bike racers and triathletes and was also a bike racer for years. So, he knows his stuff. There will be choices on which tests you can do. they will take from 1/2 hour if you do 1 or 2 tests, to about 1 1/2 hour if you do all the testing that can be done, But you have to sign up a time slot. Dave and Jim at Chenango Point will have all the information in the store after this coming weekend to get you signed up. Just stop in, as you have to sign up and see all the pricing and the brochures on the different tests, plus that will get you a slot on Saturday December 2nd to get tested. You can bring your own bike if you feel more comfortable on it to do the testing. Hope to see everyone jumping on this!!!
If you haven't tried it, you're missing a lot of fun and good training!
A huge Thank you to all the promoters who are extending our season and setting up some awesome courses for us to race!
Yesterday's Spokepost Wildcat Crossing was a great course! An awesome variety of technical single & easy doubletrack, with some grassy sections, pavement, and a cool creek crossing!
We had a blast racing the course while listening to the spectators and volunteers cheering, the announcers race comments and the music playing in between! The course, volunteers, quick results and prizes were well worth the trip to Camillus. We were blessed with good weather, good food, and good friends :)
Congratulations to Mission in Motion's Queen of Cross, Margaret Thompson, just back from Colorado, showing us how it should be done by winning the Master's women's race! Each lap, I kept seeing Margaret gaining more ground adding to the huge gap between her and the rest of us who were chasing :)
So far, Mission in Motion has placed both 1st and 2nd in each of the local Cyclocross Masters women events! We're looking for some more women to come join us in the fun! The next two races are right in our backyards! No excuses for missing these!
The Almost 18 GREENE cyclocross, and the DAVE PANELLA Memorial Cross are coming in November! Jerry Lynch enlightened our evening with a most compelling view of The Way of the Champion, his eigth book and probably his most important to date. Both inspiring and insightful, this is an article you'll want to read.
In competitive sports, mental conditioning is a vital component for success. Every athlete strives to be their best, to test their limits and develop themselves physically, emotionally and mentally through their chosen sport.
Another exciting month has passed in the development of Predator: The Journal of Mental Conditioning. Again this issue is submitted in gratitude for our developing community and the fine submissions that have been directed our way. Our poll taking with regard to our name has resulted in Podium Sports Journal and our URL will be changed accordingly. Thanks for your input.
Editors Note: Goal Setting is commonly referred to as an integral mental skill. However, in our experience there are few coaches and athletes that really know how to do it properly. It is a mental skill that will require months of diligent attention the first time through, but like all skill sets, it becomes more routine with practice. However, this mental skill is designed to be a very conscious one, to be well thought out, and thoroughly reviewed with those whose support is key.
The 2006 Endorphin Fix course promised to cover over 130 miles with 19,000' of elevation gain through the rugged terrain of Canaan Valley, WV. Racers were allowed 41 hours to complete the challenging course. The weather ranged from foggy and overcast to outright down pours to steady drizzle with temps ranging from a high of 55 to around a low of 45. Four solo racers, 10 teams of 2 and 13 very skilled teams in the 4 person co-ed (premier) division signed up and paid for the privilege of attempting this challenge.
Athletes in every sport will from time to time lose focus, become self-conscious, have self-doubts to contend with and worry about things. It happens especially in cycling, which can be grueling on the best of days. Emotions with strong physical components are the worst because they have what’s called an attractor field - an energy field that can be quite intense and can affect the senses such as sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Often the result is a closed thought loop and corresponding mood that can be beyond upsetting, and the resulting anxiety, anger, disappointment, confusion and self-doubt can really hurt a racer’s performance.
Cyclists, regardless of their level of competition, take their sport much more seriously than do their counterparts in other sports. They put in more time, money, and effort for far less glory and fewer rewards. However, despite the intensity of their passion and all of the careful planning and rigorous training, cyclists share one thing in common with athletes across the board – often they train only half of their body.
News from the USA Cycling’s Coaching/Cycling Summit
October 18, 2006 -- I just got back from the five day Cycling Summit at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The best brains in cycling coaching theory and practice were on hand to present topics in everything from sport psychology to sport drinks. What a mind expander!
Andy Pruitt, Ph.D., the patent holder for Specialize’s Body Geometry shoes, delivered the seminar on Bike Fit.As a bike fitter, I was thrilled to be in the same room with my guru, and I was happy to learn that the fitting philosophies that I embrace were those that he expounded on too.I learned a lot about correction of problems at the foot/shoe/pedal interface, with techniques to create happier knees and keep the rider from wasting power.
Kristen Dieffenbach, Ph.D. spoke about “underrecovery,” a topic that has also been near and dear to my heart.Athletes happen to be people with lives, and it is the stress of everyday living that is often the limiter on a cyclist’s ability to train and recover.Handling these issues is the flip side of cycling training, but every bit as important.Proper handling of stress issues, on and off the bike, is something that coaches and athletes need to collaborate on.
Hunter Allen and Andy Coggan, Ph.D. broadened my base of knowledge on power training and its interpretation through CyclingPeak’s WKO+.The latest edition of this software has a chart called Performance Management which allows the coach to further fine-tune the power-trained athlete’s training.Whether applying gradual training load, planning a recovery period, or finding the right time to taper for a big event, this chart is just the ticket. It is a great addition to software that I have been using for over two and a half years.
My coach, Mark Fasczewski, presented materials from his vast experience in seeking team sponsorship. He advises considering a sponsorship a partnership, one that should be fostered so that this relationship will be a long-term one. I'll be happy to pass along his recommendations to anyone interested in working on sponsorship for his/her team.
A big special-interest topic for me is coaching juniors, and I attended two separate seminars on their particular needs.Barney King spoke about the challenges, rewards and logistics of bringing junior and U-23 riders to Europe.Kristen Dieffenbach, Ph.D. presented great information on the many things to consider when coaching juniors.Cycling is a tough sport, and coaching aspiring young riders demands a willingness to find balance in their lives while making training fun.
It is Cyclocross season and I have a few athletes who are racing ‘cross.Adam Myerson was on hand to talk about Cyclocross training -- from the occasional racer to the elite crosser headed to World’s.Periodization was discussed for both extremes, as well as for the cyclist who was intent on peaking for Nationals.
Communication is my background, so when I had the opportunity to take a three and a half hour seminar on communication skills for coaches I jumped in with both feet. What a wonderful opportunity to do drills to enable better communication between coaches and their athletes.I was really happy to refresh my memory with good communication theory and practice.
Some of the cyclists I coach are aspiring to the top rung of success. And at the top rung you can expect one thing – drug testing.I attended the USADA seminar outlining doping control practices, which have not changed a whole lot since I was tested in 2004.The main lesson here is still the same; the athlete is ultimately responsible for what he or she ingests or comes into contact with.Supplement manufacturers may or may not have the best quality control, and what is on the label may not necessarily be in that shiny capsule, powder or gel. What is worse, what is NOT on the label but included in the supplement is what can really get you into trouble.Rider beware!
Because it is not usually hot around here is why I raced to the seminar on acclimatizing to heat and humidity. It seems that I get to train in nice mellow temperature ranges, but when race day comes the heat index is through the roof.Try climbing MountSnow on the first hot day of the year.Yuck.Anyway, Larry Armstrong, Ph.D. took a red-eye in from UCONN to talk about preparing for those H & H days. The good news is that it can be done. The bad news is that it takes 10 – 14 days. Not 10-14 hours L
The next morning Dr. Armstrong presented on hydration and sports drinks. All of the folks that he had scared the afternoon before were fully present at this meeting, looking for good ways to stave off heat exhaustion and heat stroke.Hydration is key, of course, as well as adequate salt consumption.Carbohydrates rule, and a little bit of protein is a good thing.Experiment, and stick to what works.
We also took away from the two sessions a renewed respect for heat and humidity, along with the realization that heat stroke kills. While cyclists are less susceptible to heat illness because of the cooling effect of the moving air, they are not immune.Especially those mountain bike racers slowly climbing up MountSnow.
A talk about my visit to the Olympic Training Center would not be complete unless I also regaled about the food. The choices were astoundingly amazing, the fresh meats, vegetables, soups, salads, and rice dishes right up my alley.I had stuffed Cornish Game Hen for lunch one day.I tried very hard to not gain weight while I was there, especially since a lot of the time I was sitting.
We did get to ride, though. You can't make a cycling coach sit forever, and many of us brought our road bikes.I took two rides through the Garden of the Gods, which was absolutely beautiful.I was there at two different times of the day, with the sun angles completely different.Pikes Peak was always visible too, with snow atop it’s over 14,000 foot summit.
I did not ride as much as I had planned, though.Instead, I was talking “coach stuff” to other coaches. We would have impromptu meetings with class-mates in the dining hall after dinner. We would stop and talk in the hall ways.Everyone was enthusiastic and ready to share.
Famous Person Sightings at the OTC:Alison Dunlap, who is now coaching the Colorado College Cycling team and was attending the Summit too.It is always wonderful to be around her and to talk with her. Also, Apollo Anton Ono, who was at the dining hall for lunch at the same time that I was on a couple of days. No, I did not talk with him – he was pretty occupied with the younger women (girls) that were accompanying him J
The Cycling Summit was an amazing experience, as was being housed at the OTC.I am looking forward to February, when I go back to take the Level 1 (Elite) Clinic. In the meantime, I will take every opportunity to incorporate these new materials and experiences into my coaching. Thanks for reading!

We're still having fun and enjoying the nice Autumn weather! Although it still felt like Summer on Tuesday night!
Please come out to Ely Park golf course and join us for some fun riding on the driving range!
You don't need a cross bike, you can have a blast on your mountain bike!
What is it like?
We ride mostly on grass with one small dirt path section. Paul has a couple itty-bitty fence sections (see attached photo) where you get off your bike and carry it over the obstacle.
There is a marked course to follow, keep the red flags on your right at all times, which leaves yellow flags on your left.
It is fun, no expectations, no team tactics, no big groups of bunched up riders.
Everyone starts whenever they want and rides at their own pace for a good workout.
You can ride alone or if you want to ride with someone, stop and wait off course until they come around and jump in behind them.
When and Where?
Every Tuesday and Thursday until we run out of daylight! I usually get there around 5pm and ride easy to warm up while they are putting out the flags. Everyone usually starts riding by 5:45pm until dark. So far this year, we've seen Carrie Peeling, Gina Elsner, Tami Lewis and Karla Eisch out playing on the course. Come join us!
Ely Park golf course, From North, East and South, Follow I-81 to Route 17 West. - Take the Mygatt St. Exit. You'll see signs for Ely Golf. Turn right off the exit and another immediate right uphill on Ridge St., keep following the signs up the hill to the golf course. Park in the main parking lot, we ride on the right side of the lot, on the driving range. From the WEST, Take Route 17 East to Exit 72 (Front St) Right on Front St, Right on Prospect St. Right on Mygatt St. Right on Ridge St.
WINTER TRAINING:
FYI, I have ordered some training DVD's (cycle-core/ ZEN) and Yoga for cyclists from one of our awesome sponsors, Terry Precision. Check out their latest catalog and don't forget to check out their clearance sales on their website! Our team members receive pro-deal wholesale pricing plus an extra 10% off if you place your order through our Terry rep. Sharon Collins (sharon@...) Tell her you are a Mission in Motion Team member.

Thank you to Ron & Jeanette Craige for organizing another excellent Applefest Road Race!
Perfect weather combined with a great course, volunteers, racers, food and drink made for a great way to start the weekend!
Congratulations to TVC junior Adam Farabaugh, who not only won the junior category, but also won the Citizen's race with a time of 34:59! Congratulations to another TVC junior Erik Wagner for his 2nd place finish in the juniors and 7th place overall ! It will be interesting to watch these two progress next year!
The 26 mile road race stayed together until the first KOM climb which formed several separate groups.
I managed to chase onto a nice group of 4 riders and we continued to pick up some stragglers until we had a group of 12. Ruud Racing Team members, Wade Hernisey, Tim Singler, Joe Walker, Mike Meier, Kurt Woodruff, Mike Morgan, TVC's- Todd Kapaghian, some Pa guys, Drew, Tom, Mark, and Occ's Eddie Luban.
My goal was to break the course record for the women since I missed it by only 3 seconds last year, so I did what I could to keep the pace high early on. I accidentally got a little too close to the yellow line in one section and was caught in what felt like rumble strips (actually felt like I was running a jackhammer!) yikes! One of the PA guys made an attack prior to the 3rd kom which was too quick for my legs to respond. I chased for 10 minutes keeping them in sight until the top of the kom. Their momentum down the other side was unmatchable :)
I glanced at my computer trying to calculate how much time I needed to break the record and went into TT mode for the final stretch, rounded the corner and sprinted up to the finish lined with awesome supporters cheering everyone on!
Congratulations to Mission in Motion's Tami Lewis, who in her 1st year of racing came in 3rd place in the 26 mile race! Watch out for Tami next year! Her TT times keep her winning those triathlons!
This is by far the most FUN race of the entire year since the season is winding down, the pressure is off, and there are so many great people to socialize with afterwards.
Attached are results which can also be found on bikereg.com, look for September 9th, Applefest Road Races.
Good luck to everyone moving into the cyclocross season!
A HUGE Thank you to our wonderful Ruud Racing team members (Wade, Tim, Kurt, Joe, Mike, and Chef Mike) did I miss anyone? along with the "green tree" guy in our group who encouraged and motivated me to stay with them as long as I could! (until just before the last kom climb)
It was great to be able to ride in a group of riders that I knew and were safe to ride with! You guys did a great job, working very well together and trying to make the guys form other teams work hard. Smart racing! The really neat thing is to see all you guys progress over the year into a group of guys with close abilities!
When the Green tree guy attacked, I believe it was Tim who went with him? It was hard to tell, as I was falling behind at that moment. That attack is what dropped me off the back chasing forever at 100 yards behind, I mustered enough on several occasions to to cut the gap in half but never made it back on. It was enough to take the women's course record by almost 2 minutes though!
Thank you for the encouragement, support and the cheers! It was cool racing up to the finish line with everyone hollering!
Thanks again and hope to see you at some cross events if I can find the right bike!
It is about time that I got a report out about my awesome trip to British Columbia and Master Mountain Bike World Championships. Tennessee mountain bike racers Kym Fasczewski and Shannon Morrison invited me to join them on this adventure, and because I love World Championships and had never been to BC it did not take too much arm twisting on their part. I scrounged up my frequent flier miles and agreed to join them.
We made a pact at the beginning that while we were taking this race very seriously we were also going to have as much fun as possible within those confines. And we did just that, enjoying everything we could. We all knew that we were so lucky to be doing this.
On Thursday Sept. 31 we were all up before dawn to catch our flights. Kym and I met in Chicago and had the same flight to Seattle. We met Shannon in Seattle, collected our bikes and luggage, piled it all into the rental van and were off for the 6 hour drive to Sun Peaks Resort.
Backtracking to the flight from Chicago, the approach into Seattle was breathtaking. We flew fairly close to Mt. Ranier, which was just beautiful in the sun, even if I could only see it from across the plane. And the Cascade mountains on my side of the plane were exquisite.
The drive to British Columbia was spectacular as well. The Seattle traffic was fairly intense, but we managed to stop for our lunch/dinner at a truly excellent Thai/Viet restaurant on our way out of town. That meal set off the rest of the trip.
As we headed north on I-5 we could see 10,000+ foot Mt. Baker in the distance, dwarfing the 4 and 5 thousand foot peaks in front of it. WOW. We passed by it on our way into Canada, and headed toward Kamloops. One of the sections of our almost-direct route to Kamloops was on a new toll road, also called I-5. The sharp steep mountains on each side of the road were just beautiful, reflecting the setting sun.
We pulled into Kamloops at about 9 or so and knew we had to find a grocery store before getting to our final destination. We looped back and forth, and were ultimately successful, and did a good job of finding the right things for the three of us to prepare in our condo for the next two and a half days. I had brought my own bread, cereal and soy powder, but we needed a lot more than that!
We finally got to Sun Peaks, about 40 minutes away from Kamloops, at about 10:30. Our little condo was really inviting by that time! We put the groceries in the fridge, took out our contact lenses and hit our respective beds hard. We had all been up for about 24 hours and we could have slept on a rock. My pull-out sofa felt pretty darned good.
We slept late on Friday, and after a leisurely breakfast we steeled ourselves and built our bikes. Before doing our bikes, though, we walked over to registration and picked up our numbers. We all got super excited about the upcoming racing. The resort was a really cool place to be.
After the bikes were built we took our first preride. Ouch. The climbing featured a one mile section of fire road -- no problem -- and then two very steep sections up ski slopes, and some singletrack climbing as well. And the descending was super-technical, with narrow and steep dusty-rocky troughs that twisted through the trees. I knew that I would be running a bit on race day. We also did an easy preride on Saturday.
We did things besides ride as well. On Friday night we went to a wine and cheese tasting, going easy on the wine and pretty heavy on the cheese. What a great combination! We had water for a chaser, and I surprisingly was none the worse for the wine. It was really fun to talk with the other folks there. The event was sponsored by the resort, and a lot of different people comprised the fairly small group. There were people from all walks of life interested in doing great outdoor things. There were lots of job openings at the resort. I mentally made plans to move there and become a ski bum for the winter...
Oh, getting back to the race!
Saturday afternoon we went into Kamloops to get CO2 cartridges. We could not fly with them, so had to pay big bucks for them in Kamloops. The shop at the resort was out of them so we decided to see what it was like during the day in Kamloops. It was cool to see that part of the area in the daylight. As we descended from the lodge-pole pine at 4500 feet we got into what look like high desert with sage and scrubby pines. It was very dry, even up at the resort, and Kamloops was even drier. It is a neat town, about 85,000 in population. One of the best kept secrets, according to one resident that I was drinking wine with at the wine tasting!
Mission accomplished, we headed back to Sun Peaks and the UCI cross country rider's meeting and again heard about the plight that befalls a lot of women's racing. Not enough women. There were not enough women in certain categories, including mine, so they would be combined as artfully as possible in order to award world championship jersies. A minimum of 6 is required, and fortunately two years ago we had six in our field. This year there were two in the 50-54, the other one being a former pro who will not be 50 until December. However, medals would be given to each age group, so I knew that I would be competing for a medal, and a guaranteed one if I did not get myself too hurt during the race. I was the oldest woman there.
I was nervous for the race, but once the gun went off -- literally, they had a gun and it was LOUD -- I felt OK. I raced hard. I was combined in a group of women aged 40 and over, and my competitor got tangled up in the beginning with another racer and crashed. I managed to stay ahead of her for a while, but I bobbled and she eventually got ahead of me. Then I dropped my chain, had to put it on manually and she rode away. I had her in sight on the one mile climb and reeled her in slightly, but she disappeared on the technical descent. I saw her again as I was climbing the ski slope, but she disappeared again.
I made it to the finish line, though, and I was happy with my racing, even if I had to do some downhill running. I ended up second, and now have another UCI silver medal! It was not as thrilling as winning the silver in 2004 after beating four other women for it, but it was a thrill none the less.
Kym and Shannon were in the same race -- 30-34 -- and their race went out fast and hard. Kym was in the top three for a while, but eventually got sick in the attempt. Shannon eventually passed her, having herself an excellent race. Shannon was 9th and Kym was 14th in the combined 30-39. Kym was bummed, but because she had not focused on this race (she raced all the NORBA National cross country and short track races as a Pro, deciding on World's fairly late in the game) she was pretty worn out. We are talking about going to France for World's next year (me, if a money tree grows in my yard,) and if so it will certainly be Kym's main focus.
After the race we had to collect our wits, clean up, eat, etc., and get up the energy to pack up ourselves and our bikes. Awards were not until 5, and we did not get on the road back to Seattle until almost 5:30. The drive was again gorgeous, but started getting long at around 11:00! Kym again did an amazing job on the driving. Traffic in Seattle was pretty heavy even at 11:30 on a Sunday night, which makes me happy I live in Nowhere, NY. We found a Motel 6 five minutes from the airport that had a vacancy, and crawled into bed at 12:30.
Wake-up call was at 4:30 AM, time to get to the airport. Kym had a 7:20 flight and Shannon and I had flights departing at 8:20. I dozed a lot on both of my flights, but not solidly. I arrived home at 8:30 on Monday evening, and I have done a lot of sleeping and working since then, which is why it has taken me so long to get this narrative out to everyone!
Well, now it is time to recover a bit and then it is on to season #3 for me this year -- Cyclocross! See you all out there.
Take care,
Margaret

Hi everyone... does anyone happen to have or know of anyone wanting to
get rid of a rigid fork (1 1/8" threadless steer tube).. I am looking
to turn the old mountain bike into cross this year... LEt me know if
you all know of anything.. I have emailed Glen already. thanks, Tami
Congratulations to TVC member Todd Sherwood for his 3rd place overall finish in the Tour De Loop B race!
Also to Kurt Woodruff, 6th overall and Tim Singler, winning his age group and to Joe Walker, Wayde Herneisey, Mike Meier & Mike Guenther for placing very well in the field of 177 riders!
Congratulations to FLCC Ernie Bayles for his awesome win in the 50 miler, who gave me some encouragement just moments before he made his lasting attack at only a few miles into the race!
Good job to Mike Beggs for winning his age group, and Mike Morgan for 2nd in his age group! I'm not sure how many we started with in the 50 mile race as some people quit along the way in the pouring rain, but I made sure to hang in there as the last finisher in the 50! Great training for those long tt's :)
See you at Thater and then Applefest! The best "fun" races of the season!

I do not have emails for everyone, so I am including TVC & MTB groups for past, present and future Mission in Motion members! We need you!
I just spoke with Shelley, she has arranged for VanZandbergen photo to take group and individual shots of us on this SATURDAY at Thater (REC PARK) at NOONish (Just after the Women's Public race).
We need as many of you in uniform as possible. Even if you do not plan on racing, please come out to be included in the group photos! All the TVC men who have M in M jerseys will be included in a group photo.
Bring yourselves out to cheer on the racers, bring your uniforms, if you only have last year's that is fine!
We also have extra jerseys, vests, shorts, arm warmers, skinsuits, a jacket and lots of gloves for sale if you would like any new items! Find our tent by the Mission in Motion van near the Tennis Courts.
VZ photo will also take action shots during the races.
Where are all the women??? Come to Chris Thater races this Saturday! Masters 30+ women can race at 2pm and again at 4pm in the 3/4! Or race in the 1/2/3 on Sunday!
If anyone needs a place to crash for the night, my house is 20 minutes from the course!
We'll have the Mission in Motion tent set up and I'll have extra uniforms for sale, lots of snazzy gloves left for only $20 :)
Pre-registration for the Chris Thater memorial races is on racelistings.com and will close at 11:59pm on Wednesday, August 23rd. Hope to see many of you there :)
The annual AppleFestival Bike Race in Montrose, PA has finally jumped into the USCF ring!
Although the 26 course may sound short, the mountains are challenging with three KOM's.
This is one of the most FUN events of the year with Jeanette's homemade cookies and lots of food and drink and socializing afterwards! Bring the family, they can keep occupied at the festival while we are racing.
Pre-register on bikereg.com listed under Mid-Atlantic races "Apple Festival"
FYI, if anyone needs directions to registration tomorrow at tour de loop. See email below...
Also, directions to our cottage is in the word doc attached. TONS of lawn space if you want to pitch a tent. Room for about 4 more people to sleep in the cottage.

Hi Marsha...
481 into Oswego - puts you on east 1st street - go straight to second light - take left onto bridge street, also 104 heading west- go straight through the city - you will come to a fork in the road...McDonalds on left, car dealer ship on opposite side of street from McDonalds veer to your left (don't take a left), you will drive by a Dunkin Donuts and a Subway also by a pizza hut..continue straight out 104 your last light will be at the college entrance...continue going straight to your next right....and follow that road straight down and you will see where cyclists will be parked along side the road.....go to the end of that road and that is where RUDY'S is...if you have a problem call 591-3432 that is my line directly and I will help you along.

Hi Marsha, see below...I have put my answers in the body of your letter. I was on vacation and just got back. Sorry this took to long, BUT the race is awesome, the course is awesome and beautiful none the less. The hills in this course are extremely challenging especially in the "A" race. You guys wouldn't be disappointed. Hope this helps.
I saw your race listed on spokepost & went to Active.com to look for more info.
I just have a couple questions.
Is there an online race course map for the 50 miler? No, Previous racing experience with large packs of riders.25 mph average speed.Riding average of 150 miles per week.Previous Tour de Loop finish time of 1:20:00 or under for 30 miles.(The race committee reserves the right to place questionable entries into B race). Is there a prize list for the 50 miler? There are prizes, but not cash and they are placques and medals...See below for "A" and "B" awards.
"A" - Plaques to the top three male and female overall finishers.Medals to males 4th-10th place and females 4th and 5th place.Course Primes. (sprinter awards)
"B" - Plaques to the top three male and female overall finishers.Medals to males 1st—5th place and females 1st– 3rdplace in each age divisions; 15-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65 and up.Course Primes. (sprinter awards)
& is there an online list of who has pre-registered so far? I do not have a list on line...you just have to trust that it is a great course and once you ride it, you will come back and do it again.
I'd like to see if there are any other women racing that will entice our team to come and compete :)
From: TCRunnersClub@... [mailto:TCRunnersClub@...] Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2006 10:39 AM To: TCRunnersClub@... Subject: Salt Springs Triathlon--Sun 9/3--Montrose PA
FYI....see note below from Sandy Babuka about the upcoming inaugural Salt Springs Triathlon in Montrose, PA on Sunday, September 3, 2006. The race offers both a Sprint (7AM) and Olympic distance (7:30AM) triathlon; all proceeds will go towards repairing flood damage at Salt Springs State Park near Montrose (Franklin Township).
Please note that pre-registration fees are good through today, Aug 16, so if you're interested, go to the race website at this link and get the app... Friends of Salt Springs State Park --if you are a USAT member, the fee is $55 if postmarked today and $65 if you are not. There will also be a tent at the Chris Thater race on August 27, where you can also register. There is NO race-day registration. See the website for more information and course descriptions; the race director is Walt Kostyk at wkostyk@.... -----------------------------------
We have received USAT sanctioning late for our event from one hurdle or another...the worst of which was the flood that took out much of our park and the main bridge on Route 29 for our bike leg. But...we overcame these obstacles and are putting everything in place...the race will go on!!
Please review the attached material and let me know if there is any way that you can get the word out to your runners. We have early registration closing on the 16th, but hopefully athletes will continue to sign on up unto the Chris Thater race of which we will have a tent for registration.
We are sanctioned for 75 teams, single or in 3's, and are running the Sprint and Olympic races with prize awards. There probably won't be much (if any) monetary award as this takes early application of which we just couldn't do.
Thank you so much for your time.
Sandy Babuka Executive Director Salt Springs Triathlon 2006 570-278-8924
If anyone is interested, this seems to be the only local race this weekend! I'm thinking of doing the 50 miler. Has anyone done that course? GOOD LUCK TO CHELSEA and TAMI this weekend! Chelsea is trying her first triathlon! Tami will be competing at the Cazenovia triathlon! Send us your tri reports afterwards! :)
ok, if anyone wants to carpool from Bingo to Oswego, let me know! Marsha

CONGRATULATIONS to our newest Mission in Motion Member, Sarah Krzysiak (pronounced Kriz-ee-ak):) of Utica who WON the Cat 4 field of 18 riders at the Albany Capitol Region Road Race on Saturday! Awesome Job, Sarah!
That makes two 1st place finishes in a row after winning the Doc Reilly Road Race last weekend!
Keep up the great work, and you'll be upgrading to Cat 3 by next season!
Anyone else have race reports to fill us in from the past few weeks?
Anyone interested in an early ride Saturday morning heading out to Whitney Point to cheer on the triathletes at Dorchester Park? The swim starts at 9:30am, so if we leave Castle Creek area around 9am, we'll get there to see them transition to the bike portion of the race. We can cheer them on before heading out for some hill training on 206! Looking to get 2-3 hours in at least. If you want to try to meet, let us know - 648-9551
Good Luck to everyone racing this weekend at Albany and Dorchester!
So far, we have 7 of us going to the Rt 369 TT tonight, we're going to get a team photo before Chelsea heads back to college, she won't be here for Thater, so anyone who would like to join us ...we'd love to have you there!
I have extra jerseys, jackets, vest for those who only have last year's uniform, you can borrow this year's spares from us for the picture. We'll take the picture at 6:25 pm just before the tt starts so we won't be all sweaty looking : )
Bring some snacks and drinks to refuel after the 20 mile TT if you want to ride!
I will be placing one final order for team discounted Ritchey items on August 16th.
This will give you two weeks to look over the order form, check out their products on the website www.ritcheylogic.com, and let me know what you would like to order.
These prices are an amazing deal, I have used all year and can personally recommend the road peloton pedals, carbon wheels, wcs protocol wheels, race slick tires - open tubular and clinchers, chain lube and tubes. I have no complaints :)
Shipping will be split among the people who order.
