This spring will be all about Ryan Braun's adjustment to left field
and Billy Hall regaining his balance at third base after playing
center a year ago. Smart move by the Brewers, who may have been able
to hang on and win the NL Central last year if not for Braun's
butchery at third. Still, you can't blame the kid too much because his
offensive numbers were sensational. Those two moves -- especially
Braun battling the desert's high sky while learning left -- plus
installing Eric Gagne as closer, will keep things interesting in
Arizona. Mike Cameron will be a good fit in center and in the
clubhouse, but remember, he essentially can't play until May because
he's suspended for 25 games following a failed performance-enhancing
drug test. And as much a tradition as the breweries in Milwaukee is
this: What's the status of pitcher Ben Sheets' health? He's about
reached the point of no return, and the Brewers' best bet may be to
consider trading him.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel speculates the elbow problem incurred
by LHP Chris Capuano might sidetrack any notion the Brewers had of
trading a pitcher to ease their logjam. But, in the same report, GM
Doug Melvin said the telephones had been quiet in any event. (updated:

hey everyone,
I have updated some of the stuff thru spring training, and I will try
to update the site daily as the season starts. i will be going to Las
Vegas though March 29 through april 5. so i wont be able to update it
that week. just 10 days away from opening day!! we're almost there!
Thanks,
Andy
Go Brew Crew!
Yeah I would rather have Bruan in the 3rd or 4th spot, more run
producing role, then I dont know how I feel about the 8th and 9th
spots. Overall our pitchers hit pretty well last year so you never
know, that could have just been a fluke though we will see.
Brewers manager Ned Yost cautioned the room not to "go crazy with it,"
but he revealed Saturday the potential of an extremely interesting
starting lineup.
It's certainly not set in stone, but Yost is considering batting
catcher Jason Kendall ninth, behind the pitcher's spot. If that's the
way Yost does it, leadoff man Rickie Weeks would be followed by
two-hole hitter Ryan Braun, then Prince Fielder in the third spot.
Last season, Braun mostly batted third and Fielder hit fourth.
The idea is to get Braun and Fielder as many plate appearances
throughout the season as possible, while still maximizing their RBI
potential.
"I'm not ruling it out," Yost said. "But there's other things that
have to play into this, and to make a big deal or a big story out of
this, it's not yet. We're still in the thinking process, and trying to
figure it all out, put it all together, and just take your time. When
you have time, the best thing to do is take it, think through it. You
don't have to make a rush decision right now."
According to the Brewers' numbers, their No. 2 hitters compiled 745
plate appearances last season, compared to 730 for the No. 3 hitter
and 706 for the No. 4 spot.

Yea I just created a mlb.com account i get e-mail alerts for all the
teams. I pretty much keep up to date on all things sports. Looking
foward to the 31st of March when we open against the Cubbies. Great
atmosphere at Wrigley. My cousins and brother and grandparents and
aunt and uncle are Cubbies fans. I can't wait to get revenge on them
this year lol
I live in the Hoosier State I listen to the games on my radio on 620
WTMJ. But I know you can't listen to the games on the WTMJ online
stream. If you guys wanna real cool free website to watch almost any
sporting event go to www.channelsurfing.net it's 100 percent free.
They don't ask for any of your personal info. You just go to the
website and look for the sporting event you want and you are there.
If they don't have live video of the game they have an audio feed.
It's so cool. If you are a big sports fan you will love this website.

For me the season will begin with the first spring training game
during the coming week. I bought the MLB audio package, so I will be
listening at work. Even with the record snowfall in Madison this
year, hearing baseball will make those persistent six-foot high snow
piles seem less daunting.

I really don't like the lineup they put together.
its hard to say what it will look like with cameron not in there. but
heres what id say for the first 25 games:
1. Rickie Weeks 2B
2. Jason Kendall C
3. Prince Fielder 1B
4. Ryan Braun LF
5. Corey Hart RF
6. Tony Gwynn Jr/Gabe Gross CF
7. Bill Hall 3B
8. J.J. Hardy SS
I think this should be the lineup once Cameron gets back from his
suspension:
1. Rickie Weeks 2B
2. Jason Kendall C
3. Prince Fielder 1B
4. Ryan Braun LF
5. Mike Cameron CF
6. Corey Hart RF
7. Bill Hall 3B
8. J.J. Hardy SS
To me it makes sense to have weeks leadoff. i think hes going to have
a breakout year this year. Fielder has to bat 3rd otherwise they'll
just walk around him if he bats 4th. Braun will have a killer year
batting cleanup. having braun, cameron, hart 4, 5, 6 gives us the
threat of base stealing and letting them run. Hall makes sense at 7 i
think thats the only spot he should really be in. Hardy just hits
great in the 8 spot. the only thing maybe is Hardy would bat 2nd and
kendall 8th. what does everyone else think??

I hope Chris Capuano does better this season. I predict that Randy
Choate won't last very long with the Brewers. He is not that great of
a pitcher. He s*cked as a Diamondback.
my Predictions for the 2008 season:
MILWAUKEE BREWERS 88-73
Chicago Cubs 82-80
Houston Astros 77-85
St. Louis 75-87
Cincinnati Reds 73-89
Pittsburgh Pirates 65-97
just a small poll question...
What do you look forward to seeing from the Brewers in 2008?
-A World Series ring
-Games in October
-Thrills in September
-A hot summer of baseball
-Ask me again at the All-Star break
The Milwaukee Brewers have reached an agreement on a one-year deal
with center fielder Mike Cameron.
According to The Associated Press, the deal is worth $7 million, with
a club option for 2009.
Cameron, 34, hit 21 homers and drove in 78 runs for the Padres last
year. He will miss the first 25 games of the 2008 season, as he serves
a suspension under the terms of baseball's drug-testing program.
He must pass a physical for the agreement to be completed, a person
with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Friday. The
person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not final.
Milwaukee hoped to schedule the physical for the early part of next week.
Cameron gets a $1.25 million signing bonus and $5 million next season.
Milwaukee has a $10 million option for 2009, with a $750,000 buyout.
In addition, Cameron can earn $750,000 annually in performance
bonuses. He would get the full amount for 475 plate appearances next
year and for 575 in 2009.
Cameron also receives a limited no-trade clause.
Cameron will presumably play center field for the Brewers, who have
reportedly spoken with Bill Hall, the team's center fielder last year,
about moving to third base. If that happens, Ryan Braun would shift
from third base to left field.
Milwaukee had a void in the outfield after longtime Brewer Geoff
Jenkins became a free agent and agreed last month to a $13 million,
two-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. In addition, Kevin
Mench became a free agent when Milwaukee failed to offer a 2008 contract.
The New York Yankees also were interested in Cameron.

The Atlanta Braves have reached a preliminary agreement to acquire
center fielder Mark Kotsay from the Oakland Athletics, filling the
hole created by the departure of Andruw Jones. The deal will be
finalized once Kotsay passes a physical for Atlanta, where he is
expected to fly to on Sunday, and assuming the commissioner's office
approves the cash negotiated to be exchanged in the deal, sources say.
In return for Kotsay, the Braves are trading pitcher Joey Devine, and
Oakland will assume $5.325 million of the $7.325 million owed to the
center fielder for this year.
Kotsay, 32, played in 56 games in 2007 after having back surgery,
hitting .214 with 15 extra-bases hits in 206 at-bats. In 2005, before
Kotsay began having serious back trouble, he batted .280, with 51
extra-base hits and a .325 on-base percentage.
He has rated highly as a center fielder, and the Braves are trying to
find a temporary center fielder for at least the start of the 2008
season, or until they deem top-prospect Jordan Schaefer ready to take
over the position permanently.
Devine, a 24-year-old right-hander, was a first round pick in 2005,
and has pitched 19.2 innings in the majors, compiling a 6.86 ERA.
Kotsay becomes the third veteran player traded away by Oakland, as the
Athletics continue what is a major reconstruction of their team. They
already have dealt pitcher Dan Haren to Arizona and outfielder Nick
Swisher to Chicago this winter, and it is expected they will weigh
offers for starting pitcher Joe Blanton and closer Huston Street
sometime before the July 31 trade deadline.

Updated January 12, 2008 9:33 pm
The St. Louis Cardinals have reached agreement on a trade with Toronto
that will send third baseman Scott Rolen to the Blue Jays for third
baseman Troy Glaus, several major league sources said.
The deal is contingent upon the two players passing physical exams
Monday, sources said.
According to a source with knowledge of the trade, the Cardinals only
signed off on the deal after Glaus agreed to exercise his $11.25
million option for 2009. St. Louis management didn't want to give up
three years of Rolen for only one year of Glaus, so Glaus had to
commit to the option year as part of the deal.
Both players were also required to waive no-trade clauses.
A source told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that Toronto will be responsible
for the three years and $33 million left on Rolen's contract, while
St. Louis will assume the $24.5 million owed Glaus through 2009. Since
no cash is involved in the trade, it appears that no approval from
commissioner Bud Selig's office is required.
Rolen, 32, is a career .283 hitter and seven-time Gold Glove winner
with Philadelphia and St. Louis. Only Brooks Robinson, with 16 Gold
Gloves, and Mike Schmidt, with 10, have won the award more often at
third base.
Rolen has struggled with shoulder problems the last two seasons, and
had a well-publicized falling out with manager Tony La Russa that set
trade talks in motion.
Glaus, 31, has 277 career homers in 10 seasons with the Los Angeles
Angels, Arizona Diamondbacks and Blue Jays. He hit 20 homers and drove
in 62 runs in 115 games with Toronto last season before undergoing
surgery in September to repair a nerve problem in his left foot.
The trade was first reported by foxsports.com.

--LHP Brian Shouse avoided salary arbitration by signing a one-year
deal for $2 million, an increase of $975,000 from last year. Shouse
made a career-high 73 appearances in 2007, compiling a 1-1 record and
3.02 ERA. He retired 52 of 73 first batters faced (71.2 percent) and
stranded 60 of 78 inherited runners (76.9 percent).
--SS J.J. Hardy, LHP Chris Capuano, RHP Dave Bush and RHP Claudio
Vargas are the four remaining players on the Brewers' roster eligible
for salary arbitration.
--C Andy Bouchie was invited to the Brewers' spring training camp as a
non-roster player. Bouchie, 22, was a seventh-round draft pick in 2006
out of Oral Roberts University. Last season, he batted .216 with seven
homers and 46 RBIs in 82 games with Class A West Virginia.
--RHP Salomon Torres, acquired in December in a trade with Pittsburgh,
will get his formal introduction to Milwaukee by attending the team's
"Winter Warm-Up," an event designed to spark interest in the upcoming
season.
--INF Chris Barnwell, who had been in the Brewers' system since being
drafted in 2001 and appeared briefly in the majors in 2006, signed as
a six-year minor league free agent with the Florida Marlins.
BY THE NUMBERS
63 -- Starts made by injury-prone RHP Ben Sheets in the first three
years of his four-year, $38.5 million contract.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"He'd still be a regular player. And it's not like he's totally
unfamiliar with third base." -- GM Doug Melvin, on moving center
fielder Bill Hall to third base.
The addition of free agent center fielder Mike Cameron shows how much
emphasis the Brewers are placing on improving their defense in 2008.
With the three-time Gold Glove winner taking over in center, Bill Hall
will move to third base and Ryan Braun from third to left field.
Making the move from the infield to center last season was difficult
for Hall, who committed nine errors before finally finding his bearings.
Braun was even worse at third base, committing 26 errors in 112 games.
His brilliant offense -- .324 batting average, 34 homers and 97 RBIs
-- allowed him to claim the National League Most Valuable Player
award, but Braun remained a work in progress in the field.
Attempts to trade for a third baseman, most notably St. Louis' Scott
Rolen or Texas' Hank Blalock, went nowhere. General manager Doug
Melvin hoped to find an established third baseman who would allow the
team to move Braun to left.
Now, even though Hall was primarily a shortstop before moving to
center, the Brewers believe he'll handle himself well at third. Hall
played 10 games there in 2006 and 49 in 2005.
"It's not like he's totally unfamiliar with third base," Melvin said.
In past years, the Brewers might have been willing to give Braun more
time to become a solid defender at the hot corner. But their win-now
mentality meant improving a defense that tied for 13th among the 16 NL
clubs in 2007.
Despite those defensive issues, the Brewers finished just two games
behind the Cubs in the NL Central. By improving their fielding, they
think they can make up that gap -- and more.
"It's all about winning now," Hall said. "As close as we were last
year, you don't know how many chances you will get."
The Brewers entered the offseason knowing they need to be better in
the late innings in 2008. First off, they were outscored by 65 runs
over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings during the 2007 season. The
seventh was the worst inning for their pitchers, as they allowed 110
runs, and the eighth was the worst inning for their offense, as they
scored just 68 runs. They scored 50 runs in the ninth inning but did
not bat in the home half of the ninth inning 46 times.
ARRIVALS: C Eric Munson (waiver claim from Astros), LHP Randy Choate

OF Geoff Jenkins (free agent, signed with Phillies).
FREE AGENTS: INF Tony Graffanino, 3B Corey Koskie, C Damian Miller, OF
Kevin Mench (non-tendered).
The Brewers might try to bring Miller back for catching insurance, but
age could work against the Wisconsin native. Koskie is gone, and
Graffanino probably is, too.
ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: RHP Dave Bush, LHP Chris Capuano, SS J.J. Hardy,
RHP Chris Spurling, RHP Claudio Vargas.
Bush was one of just two starters to reach 30 starts, and although
Capuano struggled miserably, he seems likely to get a chance to right
himself.
IN LIMBO: Capuano's name turned up in rumors regarding a deal with the
Cardinals for 3B Scott Rolen, although likely became a moot point with
the acquisition of Cameron.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Ben Sheets (pulled hamstring) was available in the bullpen on the
final weekend of the season, so his injury shouldn't be an offseason
issue.
LHP Chris Capuano (right shoulder surgery in October 2007) is expected
to be full-go by spring training because the torn labrum was in his
non-throwing shoulder.
