PHOENIX (AP) The way the Brewers are hitting, Lyle Overbay's first
homer of the spring was a welcome sight.
Overbay hit a solo drive off Esteban Loaiza, ending a 37-inning
scoreless streak for Milwaukee, and the Brewers went on to beat the
Chicago White Sox 6-2 Monday.
"It's nice to score some runs," said Brewers manager Ned Yost, whose
team had not scored since Trent Durrington's RBI double in the fifth
inning of a 5-1 loss to Seattle on Thursday. "It makes it a lot more
fun. Even though we haven't been scoring a lot, we've been taking
walks and having good at-bats. Our guys never panicked."
Milwaukee is 12-8 this spring, the best record in the National
League.
"We won 11 games in spring training last year and this makes 12, so
it's a little milestone for us," Yost said.
Left-hander Doug Davis, expected to be the No. 2 starter in
Milwaukee's rotation, allowed three hits in five scoreless innings.
Shortstop Jose Valentin, a former switch-hitter who is batting left-
handed exclusively, got a pair of singles off Davis.
Overbay, among the six players acquired from Arizona in the trade
for Richie Sexson trade, hit his first homer of the spring in the
fourth. Junior Spivey followed with a two-out RBI double.
Loaiza, who won 21 games last season and finished second to
Toronto's Roy Halladay in AL Cy Young Award voting, gave up three
hits and three walks in six innings.
Joe Crede hit a long homer in the seventh off Chris Michalak.
Wes Helms hit a go-ahead single off loser Shingo Takatsu, who has
struggled through most of his first six outings this spring and has
allowed six earned runs in six innings of work.
Milwaukee added three runs in the eighth against Billy Koch on Jon
Nunnally's RBI single, Keith Ginter's sacrifice fly and Matt
Erickson's run-scoring hit.
