MESA, Ariz. -- Ben Sheets pitched one inning in his spring debut
Monday as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3 in a split-
squad game for both teams.
Sheets (1-0), scratched from his scheduled debut last Saturday
because of lower-back spasms, gave up one hit and threw a wild pitch.
The Brewers scored twice in the first inning against Chicago starter
Carlos Zambrano (0-1). Alex Sanchez led off with a single and went to
third on Brady Clark's hit-and-run single to right field. Sanchez
scored on John Vander Wal's force-out, and Richie Sexson doubled in
Vander Wal.
The Cubs cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second on a home run by Lenny
Harris. It was Harris' first homer of the spring.
The Brewers added single runs in the fifth and eighth innings. Minor
leaguer Jason Belcher hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning
against Dave Veres. Wes Helms went 2-for-3, with a single and a
double, for the Brewers.
Zambrano had the longest outing of the spring by a Cubs starting
pitcher, going three innings and giving up five hits and two runs. He
didn't walk a batter while striking out four.
Milwaukee got three innings of relief from Wayne Franklin, who gave
up three hits and one run.
Notes: Cubs RF Sammy Sosa missed his third straight game because of a
tight right quadriceps muscle. Sosa may return Tuesday, when the Cubs
host the Anaheim Angels.
