PHOENIX -- Scott Hatteberg hit a two-run homer and the Oakland
Athletics overcame a shaky start by Mark Mulder to beat the Milwaukee
Brewers 6-5 Friday.

Tim Hudson pitched three scoreless innings for Oakland, giving up one
hit.

Because of a wet field, the game was moved from Oakland's spring
training home to Milwaukee's complex in Maryvale - about a half-hour
drive away.

Fans entered free of charge, selected their own seats and formed long
lines at the only concession stand that was open.

After warming up in the bullpen, Mulder settled in to watch the top
of the first inning - as he would during any road game. One problem:
Because the game was considered an Oakland "home" game, the Brewers
batted first.

"I was sitting in the dugout and guys were saying "Let's go,"' Mulder
said. "I said, `Where?' I forgot (Milwaukee) had to bat first."

Mulder's first spring training outing got off to a rocky start. He
hit leadoff man Alex Sanchez with a pitch, walked two batters, saw
his infield boot an inning-ending grounder and gave up an RBI single
to Bill Hall.

In two innings, Mulder gave up three hits, four runs - two earned -
and three walks. Most of his control problems came while working from
the stretch with men on base.

"Obviously, I didn't want to be as wild as I was," he said. "In the
stretch, I was rushing."

The Brewers got only five hits, including a solo homer by outfielder
Cristian Guerrero, the cousin of Montreal slugger Vladimir Guerrero.

Oakland had 12 hits, two each by Hatteberg and Chris Singleton.

"I've seen enough of the A's," said first-year Milwaukee manager Ned
Yost, who has lost his first two exhibition games to Oakland.

Notes: The Brewers agreed to one-year contracts with pitchers Jayson
Durocher, David Pember, Matt Ford and Nick Neugebauer, and infielders
Keith Ginter and Hall. Milwaukee has signed 30 players on its 40-man
roster. ... Neugebauer, considered one of the team's top pitching
prospects, had arthroscopic shoulder surgery Friday in Los Angeles
performed by Anaheim team doctor Lewis Yocum. Neugebauer is expected
to be sidelined at least six months, but there is a possibility he
will miss the entire season.
